>read any DCU-set Vertigo series (things like Animal Man or Shade, nor Ex Machina or Fables)>starts off as a more mature superhero book with better writing and dialogues>turns into the pseudo-phylosophical musings of a guy on shrooms directing an artist on LSD, which produces some pretty interesting visuals and scenes, leaving you hungry for more>devolves into hippies in civvie clothing talking casually about kumbayah and love maaaaaaaayyyyyynnnnnnnnn with some barebones abstract art thrown in there, until it's all unceremoniously wrapped up like a tv show that run out of budgetI really have a love/hate relationship with this kind of books. I always start off really vibing with it, but by the end it's all become so tiresome.
>>155932431At this point the politics of vertigo and the British invasion stuff in general holds up worse than silver age marvel
In most of these I find the art really can’t sell the high concepts or surreality the writer wants so it just has this effect of someone rambling to you but not really being engaging enough for you to care or get them, while they’re convinced you’re seeing what they did. The writing also gets really lost and loose too.
>>155932463Nah. Silver Age Marvel is unreadable.
>>155932431Shade didn't turn into that.
>>155932805It's plenty readable and devoid of the intensely cringe politics of the British invasion/vertigo type. The art in the silver age is more consistently well drawn too
>>155932805Bullshit, Ditko Spider-Man is timeless and you know it!
>>155932463No.>>155932805Correct.
>>155932858Cope
>>155932858Yeah silver age marvel really does hold up better. The 80s holds up less what with the tranny shit in sandman and fag behavior like Moore pearl clutching about Nixon
We should never have let Brits into our comics. All they do is complain about "le bad granny" Thatcher and fantasize about fascism ruling Britain by the year of 2000. Fuck all these fuckers from over the pond, fuck Moore, Gaiman, Morrison, Millar, Ellis, Ennis, Milligan, all of them. Comics would've been so much better off without them. There would've been no decompression, and comics would still be able to compete with manga commercially.
>>155933054Seethe
>>155932431Part of the issue that books like animal man, Doom patrol, and Shade had concrete end points but DC would not end them and in the end inferior writers took over over in the case of Shade, the writing team just stopped giving a shit, leading to an abrupt cancellation
>>155932875Silver age Marvel does not hold up at all. Pure brain rot.
>>155933089>Seethe This is exactly why that anon doesn't like British invasion garbage. Too many stories and characters seething about how much they hate white people and Christianity. Shit does not hold up
>>155933267You actually have the brain rot if you can't enjoy it see the appeal in older media
>>155933277Nice fanfic, crybaby
>>155933285Pick any Brit invasion book and those themes or rants absolutely will pop up
>>155933281Oh I can see the appeal in old media, just not in comics (with small exceptions), they're just bad.
>it's another "DShills having a meltdown using one-word insults" threadMan, DCucks really are majority pajeets, aren't they?
>>155933267Amazing Fantasy #15 is a classic, a definitive origin story. No other beats it.
>>155933935You post like a bot.
>>155933336>>155934021This will not make anyone love you.
>>155933336>just not in comics (with small exceptions), they're just bad.Naw silver age marvel is great. If you actually consumed anything but modern slop you'd get it
>>155934044What an odd post. I shouldn't expect better on /co/ though.>>155934048It's brain rot. You have to be autistic to read that shit.
>>155932847I'll give you the art, but the writing is so much worse. Give me Vertigo any day. >>155932848No, it's incredibly dated, a good portion of it outright awful. The only Silver Age Marvel I ever return to is Steranko's SHIELD, and it's really only for the art. I like Ditko's art too, but the writing is so bad in his Silver Age stuff.>>155933054Comics would be dead right now if the Brits didn't happen.
lol /co/ hates good comics
>>155932805>>155932858Repeating a biased opinion doesn't make it objective fact.
>>155933054Brits were brought in because Americans weren't cutting the mustard, just the cheese.
>>155937002The Brits were brought in only because the DC editors, and Karen Berger in particular, were retarded oikophobes and believed in the "American bad, foreign good" maxim, just like modern DC and Marvel hire all the talentless Latinx and Euro artists instead of American artists.
>>155937048You know nothing
>>155937048They were brought in because DC noticed this Alan Moore guy in England was writing really good comics. After he was hired and wrote more great comics, they were sold on British talent and brought them over in waves. It was around this time that they started hiring other Americans, from Marvel, indie publishers, and other adjacent fields and putting them on DC-published comics.>>155937066Don't bother responding if this is all you can say.
>>155935340/co/ hates comics period.
>>155934369>It's brain rot. You have to be autistic to read that shit. Not really. Just pulpy action adventure it's great stuff >>155935091>but the writing is so much worse. Give me Vertigo any dayNo it isn't. It's just actual pulp adventure where as vertigo is pseudo intellectual meandering. Not to mention all there bemoaning about Christianity and white people hold up worse than any silver age writing
>>155938232>It's just actual pulp adventureSilver Age comics aren't even half decent at this.>vertigo is pseudo intellectual meandering. No, it's also adventure/fantasy/etc. It's merely written much better. >Not to mention all there bemoaning about Christianity and white people hold up worse than any silver age writingThe opposite, really. Even though I don't agree with it, this is an indication that there's a conviction, a passion to the writing and not just empty, superfluous text on the page. Especially compared to the variety you see today, which feels more like pandering.
>>155939321>Silver Age comics aren't even half decent at this. They are? This is just confirmation you haven't actually read any >No, it's also adventure/fantasy/etc. It's merely written much betterIt's really not. The themes, characters, and stories are much less relatable and again the moral grandstanding and pseudo intellectual kills it>The opposite, really. Even though I don't agree with it, this is an indication that there's a conviction, a passion to the writing and not just empty, superfluous text on the page. Especially compared to the variety you see today, which feels more like pandering. There isn't conviction though because most of the writing in those subjects is biased and intentionally malicious or overly critical. Again it's just pseuds acting like they are saying something when really they are just bitching. Straight forward action adventure with personal drama for the characters like in silver age marvel is a much more satisfying read
>>155939321Forget to mention that silver age marvel is actually an original idea/product. Vertigo and Brit invasion writers are always riffing off original stuff better writers and artists made. It's objectively inferior for this alone
>>155932848It is. But people have a really rigid idea of what makes a comic book good. Their criteria is composed of three points. Ditko's run surpasses that
>>155939441I've read the supposed best ones from the Silver Age. They do not hold up beyond the art. They're a mind-numbing slog that feels more like torture than entertainment. The Vertigo books are plainly better comics and better fiction. More relatable in every way through poignant introspection and three-dimensional characterization, more entertaining via arresting, well-plotted drama and thrills. >>155939458The originality argument is a cop-out. For one, you don't know how original these "original" works are, and it ultimately doesn't count for much because they're still inferior reads. Also, Vertigo had original works as well.
>>155932431Interesting cover.
>>155942005You have to keep your morphogenetic field under control otherwise that happens.
>>155932811Shade started off with an alien possessing a racist serial killer right at the moment he was killed via electrocution, teaming up with the girlfriend of the man said serial killer stabbed to death, and then trying to investigate shit like a giant JFK Sphynx eating people. The last twelve issues - at least - were all about how that alien really wished he could get that woman to love him again but he got her killed (maybe!) (it was somewhat ambiguous for some stupid reason). And fuck the cameo Robinson wrote when he was doing the final issues of Hellblazer, too.
>>155932431OP is probably a morrison fanboy his ''criticism'' is just him hype himself up after the Matrix/X-men debacle. Morrison got bitter after he didnt landed no Hollywood work and got his work stolen by the LA excs.
>>155943864I thought he was describing Morrison.
>>155942087I'll keep that in mind.
>>155932431>>read any DCU-set Vertigo series (things like Animal Man or Shade, nor Ex Machina or Fables)>>turns into the pseudo-phylosophical musings of a guy on shrooms directing an artist on LSD, which produces some pretty interesting visuals and scenes, leaving you hungry for moreThis sounds more like what happened to a bunch of series after they made the jump from the mainline DC to Vertigo. Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, and The Doom Patrol never reached the highs of their pre-Vertigo stories. The only ones that did were Sandman and Sandman Mystery Theater, and that's because both books had direction and understood their boundaries instead of trying to be edgy and alternative because they were now Vertigo. Hellblazer never needed to make the jump because it's not like it went out of its way to have John Constantine hang out with Batman and Superman.
>>155932848Eh, I like it, but not really.
>>155945666Really.

>>155948013For you it is.
>>155932431Not from my experience
>>155932431It would be great if we had tons of 90s Vertigo-level comics right now.
>>155953691I'd rather have good comics.
>>155954165Same thing
>>155932431Books of Magic vacillated on the edge between the superhero and shroom brain zones for like 50 issues before pivoting to a more traditional if still shroom brained fantasy story for its last 25.While the first quarter of the run is basically the MC creating anticlimaxes his Hero scenarios, its still worth a read, it even has Zatanna as a major character for a few issues.
>>155956840I don't hear this talked about much.
>>155957765Neither do I
>>155959511That makes two of us.
>>155953691I'd rather have the 80s proto-Vertigo variety. Much better.
>>155957765>>155959511>>155960682It has a few things going against it.Firstly it came off the back of a beloved miniseries of the same name that basically set the ground rules and core worldbuilding for DC magic for years after, but the run itself mostly does its own thing despite being pretty deeply enmeshed in the greater Vertigo Worldbuilding, Sandman characters and concepts in particular showing up a lot.Secondly as stated before, the first 25 or so issues are kind of odd as after the intro arc which itself followed up the relatively maligned Vertigo crossover Children's Crusade, the book spends the first 3rd having its Main Character, Tim Hunter, be a moody gormless 12 year old who wins because of the people around him doing cool shit, while actively trying not to engage with the fantasy aspects of his life. So its a slow read that picks up the moment Tim starts his wandering journey/road trip.Third, the line burned itself out, directly following up its 75 issue run with a new mini leading into a new title from a new team following an older Tim on Buffy style adventures for another 25 issues. Before getting another continuation by another team, this one being a really weird and edgy direction in the mid 2000s way instead of the 90s way, before petering out. Then it got a reboot as part of the greater 2018s Vertigo Reboot that went nowhere.Lastly that original mini was written by Gaiman and he retains the same presence and need for approval to use the IP as he does with Sandman. So despite not being really involved with the Series past the original 4 issue miniseries and letting them use Sandman characters, the line in modern discussion is tainted by his hand in its origins
>>155962260It does sound like quite an investment. On your last point, I don't see how Gaiman's connection would have been a problem until very recently.
>>155962643its mostly because Gaiman post-Sandman and pre-Cancelation had this presence around him and his work where nobody wanted to use any of the stuff he made for DC without his blessing despite it technically not being needed out of respect and not wanting to be "the guy who fucked with Sandman".So once the momentum died in the mid 2000s, Books of Magic, on account of that initial mini being the iconic part of it fell into that "Gaiman's Stuff" category, which is why it took till the 2018 Gaiman headed Vertigo reboot for it to get any play again and to have none since.
>>155932431The problem with mature comics is that when you deal with mature topics as a writer or artist eventually you need to relate it to lived experience. And the lived experience of everyone who works on these books is inevitably 'i took drugs in liberal arts college'.
>>155962729Ah, got it.
>>155962923Not all of them.
>>155932463Silver Age Marvel was written for preteens, anon. If, as an adult, you find preteen fiction more digestible than a Vertigo comic, then the problem isn't Vertigo.

Yes, you can try to sell your case that it's an actual person or even two, but what's important is that they look like bot replies that contribute nothing and just necro bump a dead thread. Shit like this does not attract discussion, it just exposes how dead the board is. 4chan in general is actual dead internet theory. There's probably less than 100 unique posters per day across all boards.Even if someone wanted to post in a thread like this, those bot like replies would put them off since it shows that it's a shit thread and there's no point in writing serious replies. This was my entire point, most of these posts are not contributions or discussions, ergo they have nothing to contribute and they just bump a dead thread.
