Hey /co/ it's me, you're favorite trust fund baby Travis Knight. My dad is getting on my ass about all my movies failing at the box office and is giving me one more movie to turn things around before he pulls all funding for Laika. I need your help guys, what the fuck kind of movie should we make here at Laika to finally turn a profit?
>>155949810Do something that will appeal to gay furries (like you should’ve stuck a beefy wolf man in wildwood) they have very deep pockets
>>155949810Piranesi adaptation is an interesting direction.
>>155949810>all my movies failing at the box officeonly missing link failed right?
>>155949810I always thought that stopmotion would work amazingly well for the xenomorph/ALIEN and horror in general. Especially if it's claymation.
I don't know who you are.
>>155949810Eh, I think this is better than being a rapper.
>>155949810>releases same day as Clayface >during Halloween season when people are more wont to seek out a horror movie Oh this is gonna BOMB bomb...
>>155949810Maybe think of not releasing the same day as a DC movie not named Supergirl.
>>155949810Ya gotta merchandize, man. Beyond just Coraline. Make action figures. You don't have to do sequels or TV shows (though that woukd be a good idea), but you can make a brand by getting your imagery everywhere, ala Ghibli. Also, I'm sorry, but Wildwood just wasn't stylized enough. I think you should adapt the full trilogy but revamp the designs in movie 2.
>>155954181>>155954206No one cares about DCslop
>>155956182DC slop and Marvel Slop single handedly made nerd and geek culture radically gay.it’s not a coincidence the west went to shit when super hero moves became popular
if they wanted to financially succeed theyd stop doing the stop motion shit but obviously thats not their main goal
>>155951780Wildwood is about to beat its record of Least Profitable LAIKA Film
>>155956225Western culture wasn't yet shit for over 30 years after Superman popularized superhero movies
>>155949810Remake Wildwood and fix the teenage MC's wrinkly ass face. She looks like a divorced single mother.
>>155949810I mean I liked MOTU, that was pretty good
>>155957449>>155957507Why does everyone have giant eye bags? It’s driving me insane. Does the earth spin faster and the nights are shorter ?
>>155959263It is possible that it's to help hide seems between parts of the puppet that get swapped in and out between frames. It's not a great explanation because in prior films they just removed them digitally.
>>155959383hm.
First time I hear about this new movie, But Im living under a rock most days. Was there any buzz?
>>155957449Damn this sucks, I'll go support it at least
A story set in a third world shoe factory full of starving children
The actual story of Laika including the dog's death from dehydration and starvation
>>155949810Do a sci-fi epic.
An autobio about a spunky kid with a vision, gumption, drive and a multibillionaire dad writing him a blank check over and over for the weakest concepts ever after Henry Selick, Neil Gaiman and They Might Be Giants fucked off.
WybieWhy WAS he born and the mystery of his crackhead parents
>>155949880Thing about furries is that they have surprisingly high standards for SFW material.
>>155954181I have seen absolutely zero marketing for either of these films
>>155961109I thought she was cooked to death?
Something featuring a lonely kid whose magical wish to become invisible at will results in him getting even with his bullies, playing pranks on his teachers then going on a graphic rape spree
>>155960231I’ve seen a handful of diehard Laika fans who follow the studio express hype for it. It’s an improvement for us over Missing Link. Other than that, it’s not strange you haven’t heard of it.
>>155961275>invisible MCImagine how much budget you could save
>>155961352>an improvement for us over Missing LinkYeah no shit, problem is someone else did it already
>>155961385All of it going into the tit squeezing/hole gaping/mouth covering fx.
>>155949810>what the fuck kind of movie should we make here at Laika to finally turn a profit?Pornography
>>155961397Call me crazy, but I actually don’t mind occasionally seeing a solitary plot point I already liked reimagined in a totally new story and presented in a different medium by different artists a whole forty years later.
>>155961514>I don't mind the Jim Henson estate mouth raping Travis in court Well neither do I really but the question is will Phil see it the same way
>>155961530They’re legally distinct properties and you don’t know how copyright law works. If nobody sued the book yet then the movie adaptation is free game.
>>155949810Following the George Lucas way. Making the things they want and not to follow excecutives nor a production commitee that scams you or has interferience of plastic manufacturers that will never improve your working conditions and where they get all the money over them. And are being backed up by shoes, not even Aardman, Glitch or Ghibli can have that level of finantial security,The only studio that does the things they want and don't have to worry about revenue it's just like Troma. Justy replace them with pupets. You have to be happy that there is just one billionare that cares about financing art because they just managed to like the craft instead of making the lives of everyone on this planet misreable for selffish needs. It's on spirit what Ted Turner was doing. Probably the only good billionare.that was living.
>>155961530>Does not know that Jim Hensow took inspiration from somewhere else in order to make Labyrinth. Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland .Henson literally was a fan of Maurice Sendak which he was inspired BY HIS WORKS.in order to make this film.Without Where The Wild Things Are there wouldn't be any Labyrinth. And we know this thansk to Brian Froud. You know THE ILLUSTRATOR AND MAIN CONCEPT ARTIST OF THE FILM.Next time do some fucking research before speaking up from your ass about originality,A minor goes into a magical place that is wildy different from their reality.WOW SO ORIGINAL. A TALE OLD AS TIME
>>155961740>Without Where The Wild Things Are there wouldn't be any Labyrinth. And we know this thansk to Brian Froud. You know THE ILLUSTRATOR AND MAIN CONCEPT ARTIST OF THE FILM.Character art ≠ plotWhere the Wild Things Are wasn't about a girl wishing goblins would take away her baby siblingNext time work on your fucking media literacy
>>155962025So original that Sendak sued Jim Henson for taking to much inspiration from Outside Over There from 1981 which was published years before the production of the movie even started. You do your researchDo you think they credit him on the movie just for fun?
>>155962025>Where the Wild Things Are wasn't about a girl wishing goblins would take away her baby siblingNeither is Wildwood.
>>155949810Camp of the SaintsIt'll kill the studio but it'll turn a profit because the marketing will be free.
>>155961229idk how but Fathom ended up being Wildwood's distributor. It really does feel like Laika's had to do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of marketing. I was really looking forward to seeing the trailer before my packed Spidey screening earlier this summer, yet somehow everything BUT Wildwood made the cut
>>155961463Didn't work for Anomalisa
>>155956225Don’t project, fag
>>155960231They haven't released a movie since 2019 so they've kinda fallen under the radar. It's good tho, I saw it on Friday and I liked it better than anything they've released since I would say probably Paranorman.Paranorman > Coraline > Wildwood > Kubo > Boxtrolls > Missing Link
>>155963433Same. I went to Coyote vs ACME expecting to see a trailer for Wildwood and was disappointed by Hexed instead. But then again, I also don't remember much marketing for Missing Link either.
>>155964172>Boxtrolls above Missing Link>Paranorman above Coraline
Laika's problem for me has always been the plotting of their movies, they've always had a tendency to seem unnecessarily complicated and bogged down by minor details for the stories they were trying to tell.
>>155954793You’re not funny anymore Krobo
>>155964201I know Coraline is probably the better movie of the two, but for my personal taste Paranorman vibes with me more. They're super close tho.>Boxtrolls above Missing LinkYou heard me.
>>155949810a 2d animated one
>>155949810Just make a Coraline 2. We could all use moar Coraline.
>>155957507So ironic everyone is talking about how uggo she is, considering Coraline is the most attractive puppet ever made. Can't not see that juxtaposition.
>>155964304protagonist is wybiexcoraline's kiddo?
>>155957507>>155964310Am I the only person that doesn't mind them? Like damn I don't get what the big deal is.
>>155964172Kubo's ending is such a travesty that I'll even take Boxtrolls and Missing Link over that movie.
>>155949810My local movie theater chain isn’t even going to show it, so I’m gonna have to wait until it arrives on streaming unfortunately
>>155964484>>155957449Yeah, I think the obvious issue is a lack of showings in general. All the theaters in my area (Regal and AMC) only have one or two showings per day and both are already close to full for the 23rd.Its hard to make money with a movie this expensive if the theaters don't allot the space for it.
>>155964462NTA, Kubo's ending is fine, it's the baffling second act that drags it down.>"Hey Kubo, it's me, the villain, lemme tell you exactly where my biggest weakness is. I promise this isn't an ambush. Please pay no attention to the compass you've been following this whole time, which is pointing away from where I'm directing you. Just trust me, bro, what could go wrong?">"Oh okay, I guess I won't tell anyone we met then."
>>155964172Missing Link is still the only one of theirs I've yet to see. Is it really that bad?
>>155965324It's OK. Definitely the weakest Laika movie though.
>>155954181It's also coming out around the same time as Wicker, so there goes all the middle aged women.
>>155965324It's fine. I'd much sooner rewatch Missing Link than Boxtrolls.
>money money moneyWhy are you all so soulless?
>>155949880This but make it a novel series like 4th Wing.
>>155957507>>155957449Characters look like Ellen page post transition. shrivelled, dried out and malnourished. gross
>>155949810I lika Laika
>>155957507Truly, what the fuck were they thinking?
>>155964510Can't agree. It thematically goes against the entire moral the film had set up for the first 80 minutes of the movie. The main character shouldn't be using the same tactics as the villain to win especially when that tactic is treated as an absolute evil.
>>155965835now THIS I haven't seen any advertising for
>>155965324When will they bite the bullet and just make a HAND-DRAWN film already?? It's not like it potentially underperforming would hurt their Nike money anyway!
>>155966222*Elliot
>>155964320A nonbinary named Wymie
>>155965835>Dinklage fucking DebickiI'll watch that
>>155965324Missing Link is a vibe that you need to get on board with or else it's just going to fall completely flat, and even if you are on board, it's still only okay. It's one of those old, pulpy adventure comics. You know, it's 'brave adventurer Rex Bigchunks fights skeletons in the Amazons while exploring an old temple,' kind of thing. Except it doesn't lean hard enough into that idea.Better than Boxtrolls though.
>>155967762Cheeky
>>155967865Sorry, maybe I'm not remembering exactly how Kubo ends, but how does Kubo do anything that goes against the moral of the movie? How does he use the same tactics as his grandfather?
>>155969318It falls on LAIKA, Pixar, and Sony now. Sergio Pablos almost brought back American hand-drawn features, but then Netflix snuffed them out. And if WDAS actually wanted to bring back 2D, they already would have by now.
>>155972479Netflix is the devil!
>>155954181Dead. On. Arrival.
>>155972446>Entire plot of the movie is about Kubo's grandfather trying to blind him so he can remold his identity to join him.>Entire film makes a huge deal about how evil it is for someone to take away your identity and force you to comply by their worldview>Grandfather causes Kubo's mom to become catatonic with no semblance of her mind left>When she does gain her identity back its only after being cursed to be a completely new form as a monkey>The grandfather transforms Kubo's father into a giant beatle and steals his memories>Kubo's aunts have lost their identities to become servants to their father.>Kubo inadvertently causes his Grandfather to become human and lose all his memories and his identity>Instead of putting him out of his misery he uses the very same tactic his Grandfather used and forcibly makes his grandfather take on a new identity.>This is somehow a good thing despite being the very thing Kubo was trying to avoid and shown time and again was an evil thing. This shit is probably biased but I can't stand any narrative that would dare argue that someone being forced to live a lie is a good thing regardless of the situation.
>>155964299pffft, fat chance.
>>155949810stop motion ninja turtles
>>155974465Where the fuck does Knight get these storiesOh
>>155974465The kid killing his helpless addle brained grandfather woulda been a downer ending.
>>155975531Not like they could have just ended it with him killing his evil grandpa as a monster...
>>155975313This is literally the only non-troll, and good idea>Knight screaming he's become Will VintonEven better
>>155975651Yeah but anon saying>Instead of putting him out of his miseryimplies he would have still preferred to see the grampa put out of his misery, over what we got.
fuck you I liked it
>>155975921Liked what? Kubo or Wildwood?
Given what's left of my imagination in this post-Brexit world:Make a movie about Pepe.Have it be a remake of The Iliad. The Pepiliad..
>>155961109>>155961242ouch..
>>155974465I think there's some thematic context missing here. I think him giving his grandpa his humanity back isn't a bad thing. The whole point is the Moon King is completely blind, and thus cannot see the beauty of the world, humanity etc, that's why he has two blind/cataract eyes and he distances himself from the world of the living, which he sees as inferior. So then, in contrast to him stealing Kubo's eye before the events of the movie to try and make Kubo like him, Kubo GIVES him an eye, so he can finally truly see the world and its value. The whole memory wipe thing seems a bit much, but it's not that Kubo removed them or anything, it is more like he barely had memories to begin with: since he was blind, both literally and figuratively, he spent no mind to even try to make memories, or hold the memories of loved ones, so in the end when he finally gained his humanity, there was nothing there. It's not like Kubo forced him into a different person, but rather he showed him the truth of the world. I do think the whole "random villagers tell him he's a cool person now" thing was odd tho.
Kubo sucks ass, end of discussion.
>>155957507Why does Laika always use the same shitty artstyle for their Oscar Bait films with slight differences? It’s like the failed abortion between stop motion and the generic animated movie artstyle, and it looks ugly, and not in a good way either.Compare this to their predecessor Will Vinton who they kicked out of his own studio and forced to die alone and depressed, who was very experimental with what he did with stop motion. His studio didn’t just use his house style for everything he did, but also animated tons of smoothly animated commercials with varying artstyles and experimentation of the medium.Laika doesn’t do that, they just try to make stop motion look as CGI as possible and keep doing that with every single fucking movie acting as if we already haven’t hit the peak. They’re the most well-known stop motion studio yet they won’t experiment or attempt to visually further the medium. What’s stopping them from making something like this?https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TE1l4Krs_64&ra=m
>>155978389That is such a charming ad :D
>>155954181Families are going to go see wildwood anon, it will make its money back at least. Plus they are not spending tens/hundreds of millions on "advertising". Thus the film wont need to makee at least 2X to break even.
>>155978389I think you have a very narrow view on what Laika does. Like, every single movie they have made has a different visual style, and if you think they don't further the medium you are actually insane, considering that making a movie like Wildwood ten years ago would have been literally impossible. That said I do think it's very shitty what happened with Will Vinton
>>155975531To be fair, the movie was already a huge downer with both of Kubo's parents dying and then being forced to take care of the man that killed them.
>>155979459>Families are going to go see wildwoodI highly doubt that especially since they didn't come out for Missing Link, Boxtrolls, or Kubo. Hell they're hardly coming out for the tentpole animated films like they used to.
How popular are the Wildwood books really? You think that might give them an extra edge, or not really?
>>155957507Give her something to eat!
>>155981670It draws heavily from Portland. So i guess it is not that big outside of Portland.
>>155982942Well that's an alarmingly limited fandom, then.
>>155982942>PortlandThat's why kids look like middle aged fent addicts?
>>155949810I was interested to see it playing into this napoleonic war era character design stuff. And the main plot between a big sister trying to rescue her baby brother felt very Labyrinth to me. But then I saw a black barbarian rebel army guy and I just felt like I knew exactly where this was going. Hints of >Muh heckin multi racial rebels standing up against the evil empire>Chanting "diversity is our strength" while they storm the gates of castle bigot or whatever. I'm probably not even correct, but the minute I catch a whiff of that kind of propaganda I'm completely checked out. I'm so sick of it being shoehorned into every fucking thing that I don't even want to try for this film. Then I heard the books are all about Portland or something and I just feel like this sounds worse and worse the more I hear about it. Sorry Laika, you fuckin blew it. I'll pirate it someday to see if I'm right or wrong if I still give a shit.
>>155957507dude you're not kidding. She looks like a fucking fent zombie.
>>155985200>our evil wolf supremacist empire >their heckin valid and multicultural rebels
>>155985514>>155985200>Inventing scenarios to get mad about>Getting mad that black people exist in any capacityMeds.
>>155981670Never heard of them until this movie
>>155985514There spoil in the same trailer they get defeated
>>155949810OP, they lied to you and your silly stupid sisters posting below.Phil is fucking OLD. Older than Orange Jesus even. So really fucking old. He's got more than one toe on a banana peel. And when he meets his maker, most of his money is not going to the Ducks. Nope.Travis will be just fine.
ONE MORE DAY
>>155988819Two for me. I'm watching it Friday night
