Watching episode 6 I got the impression that he chooses to be an asshole, which ultimately makes him an asshole regardless of the reasons. All episode 9 did was take longer than necessary confirming that. He has his traumas that influence his actions like any other human being, but if he wasn't as far gone in his narcissistic delusions as we see then his actions throughout the show and being in an emotional state to abstract at the end would have made less sense. An alternate version of Jax that really did care about the others at his core while still doing all the things he did to them would have been an even more pathetic and monstrous thing that what we got.
