This character's, and, by extension, this artist's popularity was mostly enabled by public ignorance regarding Nazism and what the relationship between people like Skyla and her skinhead friends would actually have been like in real life. It's shocking to general audiences that a black woman could be friends with a Nazi, but HellOnEarth and an actual Nazi from the Third Reich would absolutely understand why that's ridiculous. She's forgotten because her comic was predicated on some truly dark subject matter. To veer away from the race shit, I think Skyla just needed to have more going on and more going on around her. Pic related (Tamers Flora) is a good example of a Skyla archetype, the member of the cast who's a little more innocent than the rest and gets careened into awfulness by those around her. But even then Flora gives us glimpses into a fuller personality, like how she's very fundamentalist and quietly very judgmental, even willing to steal money from her dad for "a good enough cause." Skyla doesn't appear to have anything like this, we are informed even by the author she's essentially retarded and lacks anything resembling agency or a realized self. Some characters around her are good foils (her mom, her goth friend) but those either clobber Skyla without repercussion or don't challenge her character in any way. Her boyfriend is a particularly lame example, as he stems from a couple punchlines and is scarcely a realized character either. What happens when you set two planks of wood next to each other? Nothing.
