>screening a movie that's still half storyboards
I didn't know this was a thing
>>
>>155966623
It isn't normal, Disney have just recently been on a run of drastically changing their movies at the last minute. Sometimes it works (Frozen 1, Zootopia 1+2) but oftentimes it doesn't (Wish, Elio, now this).
>>
>>155966623
Most test screenings are like that, even for live action movies. A finished movie is rarely tested because you might need to make changes.
>>
>>155966650
Your animated movie should not still be 50% storyboards four months before release
>>
I don't know how anyone could possibly have thought it was going to be good, they have not been able to get a single original off the ground post Covid. If (when) this bombs there needs to be a cull.

They're putting the absolute minimum into marketing.

Which is kinda funny since the film still doesn't actually seem to be finished so they're spending shitloads on crunch

I am so tired of hearing about this movie, can it just release already and get it over with, we all know it is going to be shit so what is the point of discussing it any further

How isn't Disney firing people en massé for this?
>Inb4 dei hires
It's not just that, but if you're going to pour millions into a movie, why the fuck would you not nail down the story first? I know executives are idiots but if I'm being ask to greenlight something, invest in marketing for a specific due date, and there's still giant parts of the story being re written and storyboarded? It doesn't fucking matter how gay or brown you are, you are wasting company resources and need to be fired for mismanagement. Who was the retard that set this precedent because I don't recall this being a problem a decade ago
>>
>>155968514
They didn't seem to have a problem dealing with the issues from the gay Elio guy so I don't think it should be hard for them to boot these people for showcasing how bad they run a project.
>>
>>155968514
As the other Anon said, CGI allows for a lot of changes during creation and it's caused execs to get really lazy. Constant late changes and reshoots getting the CGI teams to re-do their work.

There's that green screen of Samuel L Jackson holding a prop gun so they can... put him in a generic CG office room and make a gun out of CG.

Same is happening in Animation. Blame Frozen, the last minute rewrites made it a mega hit, now they feel they can make anything a megahit if they keep tinkering.
>>
>>155966272
>Jax pfp
>>
>>155968576
Disney is risk adverse but ffs, commit to what you thought was such a good idea instead of zombifying it. Elio was a start but if they're scared of getting called racist, all they have to do is say "this idiot is the reason we didn't have half the movie done 4 months before release". No one sane would argue against their firing.
>>155968582
They're lazy but I would be stressed if the deadline was near and half the entire movie was not done. I'm thinking about this from a money standpoint, which is how those retards think. The more reshoots that happen, the more money gets wasted and the less profit is gained. Why anyone at the company isn't coming at it with that POV to stop these reshoots is mind boggling
>>
>>155968582
Every big project story has multiple rewrites and iterations, but they generally come before large swaths of animation get started, not during.
>>
>>155968900
And that's perfectly acceptable and normal. What shouldn't be normal is half the movie being storyboards shortly before release. Thourghly planning and commiting to the idea is what should be happening. As soon as the animation process start, there should be no story overhaul, it should be over and done with. The second someone wants to scrap the story deep into production, they need to be fired immediately for trying to gamble on the company's dime
>>
>>155966272
>6 out of 10 at best

That's a funny way of saying 0 out of 10
>>
>>155966313
Why didn't she get fired after Wish? Why do they continue to trust this flopmaker?
>>
>>155968938
Hollywood has gotten away with script minimizing for so long it's made them overconfident. But it seems like the vast majority of hits with lasting appeal come from something that had a script the was mostly hammered out prior to filming and then executed well. But then people get hung up on a handful of ad-libbed moments that worked out in an otherwised well structured script and think that should just be the standard and not happy accidents you can't actually count on.
>>
>>155969043
Because there has been a massive exodus of talent from the company. Skydance in particular hoovered up a lot of them.

Eddie and the Beanstalk is being made by the director of Gigantic.
>>
>>155968514
disny bought a fuckton of companies and then every single one of them promptly caught fire, and trying to save a random new IP that isnt even worth a million dollars yet isnt worth their time
>>
All this is telling me is that the production on this thing must have been an absolute shitshow and I eagerly await comments from members of the crew.
>>
>>155969554
Disney always keep really quiet about disaster projects or ones with bad blood unfortunately. I've never been able to get confirmation of the original story of The Bear and The Bow before the director was sacked.

This is what I understand the original plot of The Bear and the Bow/Brave to be

>when Merida goes back to the witch, she actually unknowingly goes back in time
>monster bear was her mother
>ruined kingdom was her kingdom, it was destroyed by war after her refusal to do her duty as Princess caused relations between clans to break down.

We got that greentext of Wish which seems to match up with things we know but also never had confirmation

WDAS in general just has a nasty habit of cycling through the same 4 or 5 people to direct their features. That's why their output has grown so generic as of late.
>>
>>155970646
They ripped out a romance / pseudo-love-triangle plot but left a bunch of the original plot beats in the movie.
>>
>>155970646
Judy was originally separated from Nick far earlier and did a big chunk of the investigation with Gary and Pawbert instead. They visit places like the museum and a hospital for clues. Pawbert teaches her to enjoy herself and it is implied there is a bit of romantic tension, setting up a love triangle with them and Nick. All of this was scrapped in favour of her spending more time with Nick in act 2.

I always got the impression that Elinor and Merida originally were sent back in time with Merida causing the chain of events that results in Mordu turning on his brothers and seeking out the witch. Merida would also accomplish the great feats that the clans are known for in the present, explaining why the suitors (originally meant to be the fathers, not the sons) are infatuated with her to begin with. Time loop stuff.

Except the twist would be that Mordu isn't the bear, it's always been the transformed Elinor. Mordu fucking dies and everyone in the past thinks he was magically transformed (somehow). The witch sends Elinor back into the present while her mother is left behind for centuries. Fergus assumes "Mordu" killed his wife (only finding her clothes) and the rest of the movie plays out as follows except it's Merida stopping her father from killing her mother. Merida apologizes, breaking the spell. A de-transformed Elinor apologizes in turn, finally realizing how much she hurt her daughter by trying to force her to be just like her.

That's why so much promotional material emphasizes Merida's fixation on Mordu, the story of the brothers, and the clan symbols/artifacts.

Not really unless they made some insane changes.
Normally the storyboard part of production would have ended little over a year ago. But since they have been making so many late hour changes they will likely still be animating on this thing until a couple weeks before the release.
>>
>>155968514
This is sort of what happens when almost everyone in the building is insanely connected, 2nd and 3rd generation Hollywood elite. Everyone is too connected and too important or related to someone that is too important to do anything about. So nothing changes.
>>
>>155969634
>>155972901
The stuff I have seen had it more as a sealed off evil type of thing. Merrida abandoned her duties when she ran off which led to war, which led to the old King or old bear monster to be released and it causes havoc in the kingdom until Merrida comes back to stop it.
>>
>>155975376
The too many sidekicks thing happened in Wish as well. Way too many friends, too many talking animals etc. It made the cast too bloated to work for a 2 hour movie.
>>
>>155969043
Easy, she does what the board wants with little to no pushback. whenever Disney wants to make a film they can get a situation where the director wants to do creative stuff or pushes back on changes the board wants to make things more marketable. you don't want to fire the director because production will go tits up. The solution is simple, have a co-director on the film to act as the boards voice and do what they want. And if the film bombs then they'll blame the other guy for messing up production, which is how this particular director keeps getting promoted despite being attached to disasters.

That was happening back in Walt's time as well. Famously Jungle Book was going through a lot of redrafts until they cast Balloo and it finally gave the movie a focus. They rewrote and changed storyboards to expand Balloo's role when that happened.

Every single industry works like this now - incompetent bureaucrats get put in charge of companies or projects, they mismanage the fuck out of them and either crash the project or bankrupt the company, and then they go on to bigger and better things because they kissed the right asses or sucked the right dicks.

I used to work for a branch of a company that manufactured components and equipment for ultra high vacuum systems. Our project team developed a revision to one of our turbopumps that would have reduced pump-down time on systems by 30-40% and unit cost by 25%; we would have been selling units as fast as we could manufacture them, but instead upper management laid off a bunch of our engineering team so they could fill the project with sycophantic ass-kissers to try and ride the wave and then bungled the project so badly that a competitor beat us to market. Almost the entire remaining engineering team ended up quitting and taking jobs at other places, and the company's entire UHV branch ended up getting shut down several years ago. The manager who fucked up the project got promoted to an executive position and all his little brown-noser faggot friends all have upper management jobs at other firms now; one was even hired by my current employer, so I'm already searching job postings in preparation for them to fuck our shit up.

Every industry is like this now, incompetence and blind loyalty are rewarded at the expense of actual results. It's just buffoonery all the way up.

Eh, I'm sure Japan's probably done its fair share and made it cute. Like a doting mother that's actually lovable in how she tries to protect her kid as opposed to where over here they'd write her to be a "sympathetic bitch" type. Like, whenever a woman is in a situation to be an asshole or mean (in this case, getting annoyed about her son being in danger, probably being reckless, disobeying orders) they will always take the chance to do so. In Japan they have more variety in how they write women but you at least have the CHANCE they're cute and sweet, and their moments of anger could still be cutesy.

The mom/son dynamic was the only reason I was even slightly interested in this movie before because it seemed a bit different from the usual. I didn't expect anything good but I'd at least check on how it went through second-hand reception first. Then they got cold feet about letting a guy exist and made it 2 quirky women and generational trauma (which probably would've been there anyway.) They can go to hell man.
>>

>How the hell can you write a mother + son adventure? Such a thing doesn't exist.
There is a surprising lack of good mother/son dynamics in fiction.

Suprisingly few of those have shown up already.

Even the reddit and "criticism of any female character is sexist!" are kinda tired of the adorkable quirk chungus teen girl protagonists. A lot of them also won't apply when this is clearly going to flop. Disney aren't rolling out their social media army and funko pop critics for this one.
