In all honest it all depends on how they are going to cost and the paper quality. if the price range from about $80 to $90 and they use newsprint to print the pages then I highly doubt they will sell well. Bear in mind that most Omnibus cost about $125 and the page count goes up to 1200-1400 pages the bricks wil most like have a page count of 1100-1200 pages at t the most. By that logic one might as well stick with omnibus. For me qulity is pretty damn important also I have no desire to own compendiums of newsprint quality. That being said I really hope marvel does not copy skybound and use newsprint pages for these.
>>
They need to be $50 or below.
>>
The Spawn Compendium is $50. It's biggest flaw is that it has none of the covers. The paper quality is fine.

If Marvel follows that and prices accordingly, the Bricks will do fine.
>>
>>155967052
Yeah, they literally just need to do exactly what image, DC and IDW have already done.

That being said, it's marvel, so I give it even odds they fuck it somehow.
>>
>>155966945
This is a really bad starting line-up. Uncanny X-Men is the only one I can see having legs.
>>
>>155966945
More like shitting bricks
>>
The spines look soulless and the titles are in a boring font
>>
Who would actually pick up and read one of these mammoth books? I cannot imagine a more uncomfortable reading experience. Not to mention the enormous gutter loss.

At least these will look great on your shelf next to your funcos.
>>
>>155966945
I'll pick up superior spider-man and squirrel girl if the price is right
>>
>>155966978
They also need to put out more stories people actually want. X-men is a good jumping on point but unless they get the other major big series this will go south fast.

Given how badly marvel fucked up a simple idea like the premiers vs DC's compact I don't trust them not to fuck up. No doubt they'll be more expensive, uglier, of lower quality and probably still only print enough copies for a dozen people.
>>

Kids that are genuinely into comics and don’t want to keep borrowing from their local library.
And posers that just want to decorate a shelf.
>>
>>155966945
As a Warhammer novel reader, fuck those large books of multiple stories, give me three small booklets over a brick any day of the week.
>>
>>155969297
That's just an epic collection

What is a better throwing object? This or petrified gorilla shit?
>>

That reminds me, why the fuck are the ones edited by David Pringle so fucking expensive on eBay?

Isn't this the opposite of what is currently selling well?
>>
>>155969426
DC is doing well with their version
>>
>>155966945
It'll be at least $75, go OOP quickly and take years to go back in print. So failure.

IF DC's go for 35 marvels will be 40-45
>>
>>155969628
What is DC's equivalent?
DC Finest is more like the Epic Collections These look like softcover omnis which seem like they would have all the readability issues of an omni with none of the resilience. I'd be really worried about how creased or fucked up the spine would get on these.

>What is DC's equivalent?
Compendiums. They've been doing them for years now.
> I'd be really worried about how creased or fucked up the spine would get on these.
There's some creasing but they hold up better than you'd expect.
>>
>>155968172
It's really no different than reading any other big book.
>>
>>155970975
Hmmm
I'd rather buy DC's

>Marvel
Don't care. Are any of the Batman compendiums/bricks good?
>>
So, according to Omar, the ones pictured aren't necessarily what Marvel is going to bring to market

Does make me genuinely curious about what they are gonna put out for the first run
and how they're gonna price gauge everybody for the privilege of owning them
>>
>>155971124
Batman doesn't have many compendiums but he has a lot of Finest that are worth getting.
>>
Shitting bricks. I can't believe nobody caught this.
>>
>>155966945
I find books that thick really awkward to hold to read.
>>
>>155966945
Depends on the price and quality.
Image compendiums are pretty much never over 60 bucks and DC compendiums are 60 bucks, and the quality of both are decent ie if you put the book on a desk and support the spine they don’t just fall apart.
Marvel has a lot of long popular runs that would benefit from being a compendium. Hell Claremont UXM by itself would probably take at least 8 or 9 if not more but damn wouldn’t be impressive for all of it to be collected.
>>
>>155966945
I thought the appeal of comic books was that they were this skinny magazine you can sneak everywhere for 5 bucks? BRICK sized comics feels like a hindrance.
>>
>>155966945
Pic related represents the perfect dimensions of a book.
This exact height, this exact width, this exact thickness, with a firm but slightly flexible cover.
Anything outside of these dimensions is lesser in reader comfort.
These bricks are too thick, that's their sin. The pages will not open easily, the book will be too heavy and it won't easily fit into a bag. If they had just cut each book in half, they'd be fine.

But the truth is, these aren't intended to be read, the vast majority of people that buy these will never even take them out of the plastic. This is a marketing gimmick. It looks funny, haha it's a brick. You'll put it on your shelf and Marvel will make more money of you.
>>
>>155974252
You have weak spindly girl arms.
>>
>>155966945
>All that wasted spine space
>Covers designed like a Microsoft certification guide
Terrible packaging.
Those spines look like they are going to break very easily. The thickness of these books makes them unwieldy to hold and read, and not portable. If this is something intended to reach new readers, it's not going to work.
>>
>>155966945
at this point just go digital, i mean what are we even doing here
>>
>>155974599
It reminds of a store like big lots.
>>
>>155974424
Those dimensions for a book have been the gold standard for hundreds of years.
>>
Why not just buy the epic collections which are already all over the place? Looks like these "bricks" are just two epic collections in one book. What is the point?
>>
>>155966945
Depends on what they actually print. What people want is stuff like Classic Wolverine or collected Spidey.
>>
>>155975959
>Why not just buy the epic collections which are already all over the place?
BECAUSE MARVEL WON'T REPRINT THEM AND I'M NOT PAYING 100 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR DEFALCO FANTASTIC FOUR!
>>
>>155976053
What's that? Do Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Captain Carrol? CAAAAAAAAAAN DO.
>>
>>155966945
Only if they have Hulk runs.
>>
I picked up that DC Night of the Owls Compendium and it is literally the exact same size as a DC Finest. And the paper seems the same too. So I don't know what the fuck is a compendium supposed to be now.
>>
>>155974252
I've read pretty much every compendium that I own (still working my way through TMNT right now). They're perfectly fine to read. I'm sorry that constant masturbation has ruined the cartilage in your wrists, anon, but a normal person is perfectly capable of reading a compendium.
>>
>>155966945
way too fat and expensive
and ugly cover design
>>
>>155966945
Something that always makes me wonder about collections like these and the general nature of american serialized comics is that there must be so much fucking "filler" for a lack of a better word.
I get the idea of "Everything in one place", but books where most people probably won't even read half of it, seems weird to me.
>>
>>155976558
It’s to decorate their background set for tik toks or videos like the nerd crew from RLM
>>
>>155976558
The fact that you're looking at it as "filler" is the problem.
>>
>>155976937
This. Too many weirdos from the last two decades can't tell what actual filler really is
>>
>>155976937
>>155977212
I know what filler is, hence why I said for the lack of a better word.
American comics are fucking full of phoned in issues that only exist because they either need to have something with that character in it out on the shelves, or because something fell through somewhere and now they're scrambling for time, or some dumbass got put on a book they don't like so they do the bare minimum.
Some of these comics have run for 50-75 years, and 30 of them is nothing but shit no one remembers or cares about.
Call it filler, bad issues, or under appreciated works of art.
Doesn't really matter what you call it, since it's still there and most people are not going to read it.
>>
>>155977389
I'll call you an idiot
>>
>>155977410
Care to explain why?
>>
>>155967191
>Uncanny X-Men is the only one I can see having legs.
And that's the one where most of the fandom will already have those issues in one reprint or another, so they're depending on actual newcomers, and X-Men fans who are dedicated enough to double-dip on a new release of something they already have.
>>
>>155974613
Imagine saying this in current year.
>>
>>155966945
They look pretty terrible.
>>
>>155968903
None of my local book stores ended up stocking these things, but I see the DC compacts everywhere, I don't know if it's a distribution issue or a lack of interest but it's clear they're not popular. I kind of hope them not doing well makes them make better decisions with the bricks, we'll see. I want the bricks to be good, I loved the marvel essentials line when I was a kid and could see them being the successor to those.
>>
>>155974202
Comics haven't been a low cost disposable book in decades, current floppies are a premuim product that banks on a small, enthusiastic audience of old heads and speculators, though there has been a lot of younger people coming in because of absolute.
>>
>>155966945
Even at this department DC does better than Marvel.
>>
>>155974613
I like owning my books, I'm not under the assumption that I'm doing any sort of grand archival or investment, I just like phsyically picking a book up and reading it, I like having access to it at my leisure. Digital licensing for comics is particularly bad, even compared to other mediums, the digital readers suck and the platforms aren't proven stable.
>>
>>155977389
Filler is a word coined for anime that have bad insert stories and padding, comic books don't have filler, they have stories with varying degrees of consequeniality, if a single issue has nothing "important" happen that doesn't make it bad, it's bad if it doesn't do anything interesting or engage the audience.
>>
>>155966945
Same comics but with worse looking covers and spines. Gee, I wonder...
>>
>All these noodle-armed nerds unable to handle THICK MEATY TOMES
Pathetic.
>>
>>155978533
Can you speak to me about floppies? When was the last time people followed a floppy comic storyline like a tv show? Do floppies relies weekly monthly?
>>
> relies
*release
>>
>>155978663
Floppies are monthly, but your local comic store has new comics in (usually on wednesdays in the states)

I follow a lot of books in that format, it's the main way I engage with comics.
>>
>>155978645
I am waiting for the Hulk compendiums for my arms are for the gospel of the Hulk only.
>>
>>155978235
Obviously I have no idea what this means, but I have to wonder: do you?

In current year it's never been cheaper or more convenient to go digital. The quality is excellent. For the price of a single unwieldy brick you get an entire year of a digital sub that gets you literally everything, old and new.

I like owning stuff but if I'm getting an omnibus my goal is convenience or price. And at that point there's no reason not to go digital
>>
>>155977845
One thing though, is that we STILL don't have a definitive collection of Claremont's Uncanny X-Men though. Every format from MMW to Essentials to Omnibus to Epic Collection all have serious flaws in how they are organized and each version is missing critical material.
>>
>>155967052
>It's biggest flaw is that it has none of the covers.
It's an advantage, thoughbeit. I don't like it when you're reading a trade paperback and they just insert covers out of nowhere. I just want to read the whole story at once without any distractions!
>>
>>155971058
>Compendiums. They've been doing them for years now.
They're unprofitable as fuck tho. We were lucky we got the 2nd volume of Sandman Mystery Theatre, because DC were going to cancel it.
>>
>>155979141
I prefer my covers all in the back.
>>
>>155978673
I imagine it would be pretty cool to follow a comic storyline and every month they drop the next episode. That you would buy the floppy in person. This is virtually dead is it not?
>>
>>155968172
They bigger that any book of Wheel of Time
>>
>>155979605
There's probably a few hundred thousand people in the US who regularly buy at least one floppy a month.
>>
>>155966945
If they were 19.99, 24.99 at most, they’d do well. But at the price point they have it’ll do as poorly as the rest of the collections.

>>155966978
Still Way too expensive. A paperback Omni is going to get destroyed in just a single read through. To say nothing of the inner quarter of the page being damn near unreadable.
>>
>>155979288
This.
Cover art is cool.
>>
>>155974424
Marvel supposedly thinks much of their potential customers are women so thank you for confirming this is a retarded product.
>>
>>155979159
If theyve been so unprofitable, why do they keep printing them, and keep a lot of them in print?
>>
>>155978729
Marvels app up until this point has been a buggy, crash prone mess that, even when it does work, has one of the worst UIs and most horrible seo I've ever seen. I cancelled my sub two days into my free fucking trail because I'd had to reinstall it 4 fucking times to make the thing work.

And that's being sunset now anyway, and webtoon is taking over. Who knows if that service will be any better.
>>
>>155979904
>A paperback Omni is going to get destroyed in just a single read through. To say nothing of the inner quarter of the page being damn near unreadable.
No they don't, and no they don't. It's so weird you're going to speak so confidently on something you have zero experience with.
>>
>>155980012
NTA but I've definitely had my share of poor paperbacks with messed-up spines and pages becoming unglued.
>>
>>155979968
Is it because it's basically charity on their part? It's kinda similar to why Google keeps YouTube alive despite it being a money pit.
>>
>>155979857
What was the last popular floppy people followed?
>>
>>155980690
Absolute Batman sells half a million a month.
>>
>>155966945
Who is this even for? New readers won't drop $80+ on something totally blind and old readers have probably already read what they'll be bricking.
>>
>>155969297
Same. The boxed volume model would be better. Not to mention how shit those spines will look once they broken because you had to fold it in half to see the whole page.
>>
>>155980804
For people who actually want to read comics, not just put them on a shelf (like with hardcovers) or just take them when they're traveling somewhere (like with compacts). These bricks will contain a similar amount of stories as Absolutes or Omnibuses, but they'll be easier to read.
>>
>>155980879
Are they really easier to read when reading them makes them fall apart?
>>
>>155979288
I prefer each issue having cover as originally printed at the time (logo, texts, everything), and in back of that page the cover but cleaned up, textless, and basically the original art re-photographed. Shade omnibus does this and it looks very nice
>>
>>155979141
My nuanced take is that if the story was written for the trade, put the covers in the back. If it was written as single issues, they should be presented as they were published.
>>
dc could make one of these and have the side image be bane fucking up batman spine
because that is what is going to happen
the spine will get fucked
>>
>>155980325
I own multiple compendiums. They don't fall apart when you read them.
>>155980617
Ah, yes, I'm sure the publishing corporation is keeping compendiums in circulation due to a sense of charity. You fucking mental midget.
>>155980893
What the fuck kind of spastic are you that reading a book makes it fall apart?
>>
>>155980922
I do see the appeal in that too, as it makes each issue easier to find and splits arcs up into ‘chapters’. Maybe the best way is to split the difference and have a period cover for each issue and all the original/variants at the back, maybe even some commentary.
>>
>>155968903
who made them go with these awful covers
>>
>>155978556
Some of the best single issues of comics would be "Filler" to these retards. The concept of "episodic" entertainment is completely lost to these people.
>>
>>155979141
>It's an advantage, thoughbeit. I don't like it when you're reading a trade paperback and they just insert covers out of nowhere
They're not out of nowhere. They're basically chapter breaks. And it's better to know what you're actually reading other than a big blob of comic.
>>
>>155978556
Yes thank you for explaining a word I just said I already knew.
>it's bad if it doesn't do anything interesting or engage the audience.
Yes that is what I was referring to.
These comic have run for so long that large chunks of it is stuff that no one cares about or remembers.
One of the reasons I said filler isn't the right word I'm looking for is because some filler is actually memorable and beloved, despite largely being made for padding.
What I'm talking about are the oceans of stories that no one cares about, wedged in between arcs, or issues that people actually talk about.
>>
>>155982884
Comics were disposable entertainment.
>>
>>155982884
>Yes that is what I was referring to.
The problem is you don't know what engagement means. No, not every story is going to be a 10/10 all time classic but at the very least even a general issue is very often entertaining. In fact most of the big stuff that stuck around only did so after the fact.
>>
>>155974613
reading digitally sucks ass
for any type of book, the best way is physical
every time
>>
>>155983857
Whilst I'd normally agree with you, I've found a Kindle to be pretty useful for travelling light, however as that screen is designed for reading I guess that's doing its job.
>>
>>155984058
I'd done some okay reading on kindle. It wasn't awful. At least not for novels. Comics I find it tends to struggle a bit. Especially with two page spreads.
>>
>>155978709
>I am waiting for the Hulk compendiums for my arms are for the gospel of the Hulk only.
i wouldn't hold your breath for those if were you at least no when it comes to the Peter David era. It took five whole omnibus of 1000 pages to cover tha era. by the logic it would be better to reprint the omnnibus.

>>
>>155978767
If the missing material you're talking about is stuff from other titles and minis, can you really see these Brick collections doing anything different to the existing reprints that have been done before?

Also, wouldn't that mostly be more of an issue for the later years of the run when there's much more side material and crossover chapters? The early years, from Wein/Cockrum through to Byrne leaving are always going to be the part of the run that sells best, and they've been reprinted so many times it's got to be as close as Marvel gets to evergreen.
>>
>>155985108
>and they've been reprinted so many times it's got to be as close as Marvel gets to evergreen.
Because of the low print runs marvel put outs, these are basically always out of print, aside from the dark Phoenix saga. There have been multiple reprints of the epics, but they are always tiny, and always sell out within a month or two. That's pretty fucking far from evergreen.
>>
>>155966945

I just hope it lasts so that it will reprint classic ASM and all of Clairemont's X- Men run before going bust.

I think google is getting paid to maintain youtube by IP holders, because as is, everyone uses youtube to look up videos, and if there's no way for those IP holders to get a cut of whatever ad revenue the site hosting the video has, they'll shit and piss themselves into a coma.

Why would they make this shit instead of a box set of trade paperbacks? Put the same hundred issues into 10 independently bound volumes in a slipcover. 10 covers, 3 display sides + spines for art they already own the rights for. That and photopaper are the only reason anyone would read a comic not from readcomiconline or a .cbr torrent.

>>
>>155985048
Floppies have typically been 18-20something pages plus ads, never as low as 10. Back in the 40s-60s some individual stories could be 10 or fewer pages, but there were always multiple stories packed per issue when that was the case.
>>
>>155985212
Google definitely makes money off of YouTube. The profit margins aren't insane, but the upper estimate is 18 percent.

>>
>>155986655
The spine only splits if you treat the thing like you're a fucking crayon eater. The only issues Ive had with compendiums were the invincible ones, and that was only after I lent them to an idiot friend, and even then the spines didn't split, they rolled a little bit.
>>
>>155986822
A book like that will shit itself being left open on a flat table at page 500, especially with thick pagestock. At the least the spine will bow from use and the cover may start to separate just because that's how glue works. If you've ever had a well read 1200 page book these things come with the territory of actually using them. Going to reread wolverine vs dickbutt #23 for the Xth time will kill this entire volume over time.
>>
>>155986947
>If you treat them like shit, they will break!

No fucking shit, Sherlock. Don't try to lay them flat and that doesn't happen. I've read probably a dozen compendiums since they've been a thing and none of them have split spines. This is 100 percent a you problem.
>>
>>155987111
>Just baby your purported daily driver reference copy of the whole run of insert marvelslop here or it'll literally turn into loose leaf (your fault btw)
Or they could print the same volume in a suitable format like non retards.

It's even bad for your use of putting it next to the funcos. Matte paper softcover, no cover side displayability even if it had cover art because it'd stress the spine, and will show instant wear damage when someone normal tries to read it like a book.
>>
>>155987257
