When was the last time Spider-man was good. Because we bitch about OMD and BND and shit but it's not like the tail end of the 90s were an especially great time to be a Spider-man reader either. But what was the last really good stretch of Spider-man comics? JMS? Marvel Knights had a good dozen or so issues.
>>155970667There were good comics during the Dan Slott era. You just have to pick and choose. But the last time Spider-Man was really good was when David Michelinie was writing him.
>>155970711>Dan SlottName them fuckface.
>>155970667While it wasn't universal, I know a good number of /co/ liked Spencer's run. There's also Symbiote Spider-Man in spite of Land drawing it, there was also Life Story although it was much too short. JMD did some good minis taking place in the past although those were more about Ben Reilly. Spider-Man and the X-Men was a fun mini.
>>155970667Spider-Man's run as a comic book character is really shoddy, and I mean lower than Wonder Woman-tier. People like the idea of Spidey as presented in movies and cartoons and games, but the character's publishing story is really dodgy.
>>155970723A good chunk of his run was inoffensive. I liked Spider-island. It really was just unambitious as hell whenever he wasn't doing something retarded. >>155970748Spencer tried, bless him. He sure as fuck tried.
>>155970723Spider-Island, the Feast arc with Mr. Negative, Anti-Venom, and the Thunderbolts. Lots of little short stories that went for maybe two or three issues. There were just regular classic Spidey adventures during Slott's run which was nice.
>>155970748Spencer's run was fucking terrible garbage. Entire issues where people drink coffee and talk and do nothing else.
>>155970667The entire line started to drop when maximum carnage hit. It became more mid then good with more then a few runs being total shit. When he moved into the avengers mansion it just hit shit city and started going down hill there. The unmasking thing was a sign spiderman was fucked.OMD was the confirmation of it. Since then it's waffled between total shit and worth picking up to thumb through an issue if it was free and you happen to see it on a rack in a comic shop.
>>155970667Renew your vows was decent. Though Annie grew up to fast.
>>155970667Spencer :(
>>155970723Didn't /co/ like when Doc Ock was spiderman?Wasn't that Slott who was writing?
>>155970783>but the character's publishing story is really dodgy. No? I mean the past couple decades have been pretty rough but I can't think of too many really bad eras pre 2000s. Denny O'neil's could have better.
>>155970867Superior was always a meme.
The last time I was regularly enjoying Spiderman was the [original] BND up to and including Grim Hunt/Origin of the Species. I think the immediate successor to that was Big Time and by then I was pretty unimpressed with what AMS had to offer. I'll say that there were parts of Superior that were kind of cool but the ending was shit and retroactively made a lot of the earlier stuff hard to enjoy.>>155970723I don't recall which of the BND issues were actually his so there are probably more but I'm pretty sure he did New Ways To Die which was fun.
>>155970850That time skip should be charged with murder.
>>155970867Shitposters loved it. Not so much everyone else.
The era right before Byrne but after the Clone Saga
>>155970909Even back when it was coming out?
>>155970948Especially back when it was coming out.
>>155970948It depends on how much a person knew and cared about the characters. Peter was shit on worse than he is now. Wacker said that Peter was permanently dead and people should get used to Otto being Spider-Man from now on. Slott went on social media bragging about how an upcoming issue would piss people off. It was done the Brevoort way, piss off people to get them talking and buying. And it worked. Superior Spider-Man sold better than ASM for years. Now imagine the anger it was generating and the anons here having a field day pouring gasoline on it.
>>155970948It was well liked during storytime threads. It started being disliked around the halfway point, maybe a little further. It was generally disliked by the end.
>>155970867Everyone hated it. The people who "loved it" are the same people who "loved" Paul.
I feel like I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Marvel Adventures. Good, good book.
>>155970867You think people enjoyed a plot that relies on the existing ASM cast and wider Marvel world having rocks for brains? Also Otto sexually assaulting by deception round the clock? It had defenders, even now, but it's aged like milk.
>>155971474Damn good book. Can we please get Tobin on ASM?
>>155970783ASM was pretty consistently good until the 90s. It wasn't perfect, but there were way more hits than misses and even the misses generally weren't that bad.Typing that up, I realize that still means the last 30 years were mostly bad. Fuck.
>>155971571Even when the main book wasn't firing, Spectacular or Web might have had a good story. JMD and Sal might be some of my favorite Spidey books of all time.
>>155971615Sal Buscema is criminally underrated. I could read his issues just for the art.
>>155970789>>155970808>>155970893Naw. BND-era wad milqetoast and Slott just had some very ok to boring shit. I will say Paper Doll and soms villains at least had ok concepts for their powers. But he was still Reddit-incarnate.
>>155971571The last thirty years were led by the same crony cabal who have been trying to kill off Peters development with a wife and child since the 90's, so it's no surprise the ouroboros couldn't produce much of worth.Endless MUH GWEN reheating of Silver Age nonsense, without the charm or big cast.
>>155971725His took me a while to warm to because I was a dumb 90s kid but goddamn that paneling. You could read his issues just through the art.
>>155971727I feel Slott wouldn't get nearly as much hate were it not for his antics online. If a inhouse documentary is making fun of you for it, it's time to stop posting.
>>155971757I mean that's kind of a general problem these days with a lot of people. I quite like Mark Waid as a writer but man does he go off. Writers were a lot like Hollywood. You lost some of the magic when you peaked behind the curtain.
>>155971558I wouldn't trust editorial. Seems a safer bet would be to do lower profile spidey titles like he had with MA.
>>155971727>some very ok to boring shitYou have successfully described every Spider-Man era after the 70s.
>>155970667Zdarsky's Spectacular run wasn't bad after it finally got going.
>>155970667The early 90s were alright up until Peter's "parents" came back, shit started getting messy and did not recuperate after that.aThe early 2000s were a good time to be a spidey fan with USM, JMS and JrJr on ASM and the Mark Millar MK run, then Deodato comes into ASM and it immediately goes to shit, USM becomes hella boring some time before Bagley leaves, and then the pipeline of Civil War-OMD-Brand New Day hit and everything has been trash after that
>>155972535I often feel like it was a waste to not keep his parents for real
>>155971615I'm now thinking about the failed side ongoings for Peter.
>>155972823It felt a little excessive he had so many titles in the 90s but how sad is it he can't now.
>>155970667The main book was bad before omdLast genuinely good Spider-Man comic was Marvel Adventures
>>155970867Superior was a neat power fantasy where Spider-Man builds spiderbots and gets an army of spider minions to ransack Kingpin but overall it required the Marvel universe acting like retards to work and Doc tried to use Peter's body to bang a midget.
>>155973076The Spock women consent issues are why I can never enjoy the arc for what it was.My god Slott can't write women or relationships.
>>155970867""People"" likes the Superior Spider-Man for the same reason they like Miles.>Cool costume>Hype moments and aura>Overall niche ideaAnd of course most of them have not read the comic. Ask any superior fan about the book and you will start seeing a pattern.
>>155973206It's definitely one of those books people leave in the plastic wrapper
>>155972629I think they should have kept one of his parents like Alison Mograin turned out to be the real mary parker.
