I think the fundamental difference between references in Venture bros. and those in family guy, south park and rick and morty is that the former stem from a genuine interest in history, literature, and obscure films on the part of Hammer and Publick. The latter, by contrast is the product of consumption the entire joke is essentially, “Look, it’s die hard” or “What if these characters said fuck and did weed.
>>
>>155984647
Also their love of prog rock and movies means they sneak in these I don't even know the reference to
Characters like Dragoon are entire movie villain reference but he is his own thing

Anyone got the ending scene where they try to explain themselves and get beaten up.

When I watched ghosts of sargasso as a kid, I’d never even heard of Bowie. I thought the scene with “Major Tom” was a perfectly natural way for a dying man to spend his final moments, it made complete sense within the scene and that's why it's a good reference. If it had been South Park or Family Guy, they probably would’ve outright pointed out, “hey, this is that David Bowie song!” As much as Matt and Trey rag on family guy’s “You think that’s bad?” jokes, they treat references in pretty much the exact same way.

I tried it because of this episode. I really like it.

I had a spanakopita once. Didn't care for it
>>
>>155983986
I always forget that was her new husband, not her maiden name
also funny how often jackie O comes up in VB
>>
>>155984647
Uh.. no, all of those shows adore the source material. Even if they do make some biffs here and there.
That said, the VB guys are on their own level. Seth McFarlane keeps forgetting Apache Chief's power activation phrase, something they would never do.
>>155984902
a valid complaint, but one that definitely got worse over time in the shows you're criticizing. they started out pretty good
I also like how Rick called anyone out who laughs at a reference they don't get, by just making one up
>>
>>155985548
well I had some spinach... pasta. chicken florentine actually. not quite the same thing. But I did make it from scratch!
>>155987234
It's very hard to get spinach baked into a cheesy pie to taste good. spinach does NOT appreciate wet cooking, it wants hot oil. I would think the best way to do a spanakopita would be to fry the spinach in a bit of very fatty cheese or just butter, then slide it quickly into some pre-liquefied cheese and then slide that quickly into premade crust, and eat it.

>Uh.. no, all of those shows adore the source material. Even if they do make some biffs here and there.
You didn't understand the statement, It's not about whether they like something or not. the point is that the writers of FG/SP/RM consume mostly goyslop. They've never read or watched anything genuinely interesting in their lives.

Venture bros works because they make it a functional thing in universe even if you dont know the reference while family shit is literally just basedjacking at a reference that is completely separate from the actual plot for world so they have to make it the most bottom of the barrel shit possible so that half the audience isnt just sitting there for 60% of the run time wondering what the fuck is the joke

Phyllo is lovely stuff, but when you have the craving and can't exactly spend hours laminating dough (or don't wanna go to the store for it), and/or if you (understandably) can't manage to cook the spinach just right in a PIE, one of the hardest forms to manage, I suggest making a little cheesy spinachy pasta instead. same basic shit, way easier. chicken florentine, vegetable lasagna (with meat added), whatever.

I think the fundamental difference between steak and shit is the former is good and edible and usually doesn't make you sick, and and the latter is bad and inedible and always makes you sick.

I am very smart. I think a lot.
>>
>>155993103
I'm pretty sure eating shit doesn't ALWAYS make you sick. You have a decent chance of your stomach acid breaking all the bad stuff down, and it also depends what KIND of shit. A better point is that it always -tastes bad-
>>
>>155985776
Oh my, Brock whale-shaped sweet meat! How gay! What a glorious confection!
>>
>>155984647
That's exactly it. Venture Bros doesn't beat you over the head with its references. Yes, it'll sometimes spell them out, like the many gaming references it makes, but it doesn't feel patronizing like Family Guy or Rick and Morty where they repeat the reference source so many times it goes from homage to "hey, did we mention we really like Die Hard and Voltron? Huh? Huh? Well? HUH?!"
>>
>>155993876
Orpheus, do not leave and do not change one iota.
>>155993945
true, and as I've pointed out before, one of the rare times the referencing is actually clunky it's a hint that 21 isn't really 21

(another time was just because they don't entirely know what Zoids are, but it's cool that they got mentioned at all, even in a slightly clunky way)
>>
>>155994200
It's funny since Gary probably would watch that show, but have a way more elaborate way of mentioning the spies like either belittling their lack of stealth or referencing an absurd episode premise.

Just rewatched the episode, definitely didn't remember this scene. Was it censored in broadcast?
>>
>>155993876
Good lord! This isn't cake! This is iced cream!
>>
>>155994458
Of course, but since season 3, the seasons were uncensored on DVD/bluray, though I think only season 3 came with the option for censored and uncensored, while the rest are strictly uncensored. It's a shame we never got the first two uncensored, but then again, it would have only been bleeped words, since apparently they didn't animate the blurred stuff
>>
Man, I was just thinking of how insane a status quo change season 4 and 5 are from the rest of the show. One thing I love about VB: It's not afraid to shake things up, kill the darlings, then see what happens. The moment something starts getting old, they switched it up and kept it fresh.
>>
>>155994393
yeah, it was simultaneously belabored and forced, too detailed yet not apt enough. A guy pretending to be Bowie is just not prepared.
>>155994588
which sucks because that's where most of the lady stuff is.
The only thing I really need unbleeped is the christmas special, because I have no fucking idea what Doc says at the beginning, after waking up from his weird dream caused by sleeping on the remote and changing it to every christmas special
>>155994606
it's true, it's just a shame we didn't get more of each one. Each season deserved to be like, two full 24-episode 45-minute runtime seasons, before shaking stuff up. It never got old for me. well, okay, the new york shit did. but even that, I was constantly like wait, I want to see more of this, more of that, I want Dr. Orpheus back, I want to see more of what Brock's up to...
