you are those western hippies. meditation doesn't belong to buddhism exclusively it's something humans have done for literally tens of thousands of years. it has been part of many other religions, and still is.

I think it's because some Westerners still confuse prayer and meditation as the same thing so they treat eastern rituals of meditations as simple peaceful contemplation you do in times of high stress when meditation was more of an exercise of trying to obliterate one's ego. It was never meant to be a peaceful and comfortable endeavour where you commune spiritually (which is what prayer is).
