The film is actually more akin to Upgrade than The Fly/Substance, it's really moreso about a guy using his weird new powers to get revenge on a bunch of mob bosses. I do like that the film commits to him becoming a full villain than just an antihero.

I think it's to emphasize his amorphous mismatched nature.
Also to not just do the design everyone is already familiar with again, people making adaptations always want to put their spin on these characters.
