How is Doctor Doom regarded as a leader in-universe? Sometimes it seems like he's a beloved but egotistical king, and other times it seems like he's a feared and hated tyrant. Is it kind of like eastern European leaders IRL, where older people love him because he brought order and security to a chaotic territory, but younger people hate them because they have a higher standard due to not having to live through harder times?
>>155989661that little girl should be in a gulag for insulting the greatness of DOOM
>>155989691Doom seems like he'd be *just* nice enough not to torture a little girl to death for talking shit but he'd probably threaten the garbage collectors to skip over her parents' house for six months.
>>155989661he is more like a middle eastern dictator who advances the country at the cost of freedom and serves as a bulwark to stop much worse things that will happen if he is deposed
It is commonly mentioned in comics that the people of Latveria love him.
>>155989749I'm pretty sure she's a skrull and skrull lives don't matter, throw her in boiling oil!
>>155989661I think the idea is he's the best dictator on earth, but that still makes him worse than the worst democratically-elected leader.A lot of his people love him, but they have no fucking choice. Both literally, and because without him, they'd be a second-world shithole teetering on the edge of 'third'. Which is how dictatorships happen to begin with.
>>155990170>but that still makes him worse than the worst democratically-elected leader.Nice coping
>>155989947>people of Latveria love himthey’re brainwashed like NK citizens
>>155990287>brainwashedBullshit myth started during the Korean War. No such thing exists, nor has ever existed.
>>155989749>>155989691severe tickle correction should be enough
>>155989661Literally just depends on the writer, most of them probably lean more towards Doom being a benevolent dictator nowadays because him having a positive relationship with his people (even if it's primarily ego-driven) is more interesting than his subjects only being kept around to be abused or killed for evulz.
I think his people loving him makes sense, every prior latverian leader is incompetents, he isnt.
>>155990584>is more interestingnot really it's just more Doom wank
>>155989661I think it depends on which Latverian you ask. Some people probably adore his leadership and think he saved the country, while others think he's a tyrant. Some people even probably think both.
>>155989661>Corrupt? Noo, not very corrupt. He's kind of a dick, but the trains run on time and the economy's pretty good.
Under Kirby - dictator, since Byrne - beloved.
>>155989661That depends entirely on the series and authors. I liked the follow on to Unthinkable where the FF take over Latveria for a bit to disarm all of Doom's superweapons. That run goes for a more nuance portrayal where the Latverians don't exactly love him, but they're horrified of living without his protection because all of their neighbors hate them and Doom was the only thing keeping them from being invaded by everyone in Eastern Europe.
>>155990747that's the point, its doom wanking himself. He probably spends an hour every day compiling various macroeconomic and social statistics about latveria and new york city so that he can send daily emails to Reed about how Doom's flying cars suffer 2.4% fewer traffic related injuries per 100000 pop than the inferior Fantastic Four flying cars.
>>155989661>How is Doctor Doom regarded as a leader in-universe?It's very inconsistent and oftentimes portrayed a bit unrealistically. There was that one 2010s comic where Doom was personally fighting off some aliens or whatever invading Latveria, and it was told from the POV of a brainwashed Latverian girl who worshipped Doom and her dialogue went something like this>I was freezing on the streets in my rags after the doombots sent my family away... But then I watched him dispatch those monsters and I saw that Doom is truly a god among men...Exaggerated but that was basically the sentiment. And like, it's a nice sentiment, I appreciate that the writer tried to portray this with some degree of complexity, but it's still too black-and-white, too obviously written by a sheltered American writer who doesn't understand the nuances of people living under tyranny. Like he has to do these exaggerated cliches where it goes from one extreme to the next at the drop of a hat (Doom is a monster who robs children of their families because they say mean things about him! Doom is a hero who single-handedly fought off a gorillion aliens!) when IRL dictatorships are just kinda messy places to live in with some dirty and complicated geopolitical history and people who are conditioned to be opportunistic assholes and cynical about the world around them.
>>155989661I respect that despite having 23rd century level healthcare and technology, Doom still maintains a 17th century aesthetic for Latveria.
>>155991096Oh... uh... oh shit>Quietly kicks Doom's body out of sight.
>>155991129lame
>>155989898>bulwark Whoa, I've never heard of that word before
>>155990624More than incompetent. Zorba's father was a petty dictator in his own right. Doom mostly cares for the people but he keeps the country kind of backwards culturally and stamps out reformers, which tends to make him look repressive to anyone who doesn't want to live like a Heidi cosplayer.
>>155989661It makes the best sense for him to be on the same scale of morality as Tito or Franco, but then someone like that doesn't archetypically make sense to try and take over the world megalomaniacally so they have to play up his tyranny for contrived reasons.
Doom is like the most >It depends on the writers character ever.Sometimes he's a benevolent leader who just needs to overcome his ego to become a force of good, sometimes he'll destroy a universe just because he found out there was an alternate good version of himself in it.
>>155989661With all of Doom's wisdom I'm surprised he never bothered calling out Reed for not advancing technology in the US seeing as there are no flying cars or cure for aids despite Reed probably being a typical egalitarian, communitarian and altruistic liberal like every American superhero who isn't primarily focused on beating bad guys and making sure others don't dieWhile in Latveria I'd imagine they have free healthcare that can get rid of space aids, no poverty or better education that makes for good parents who don't give their children unrestricted internet access, the fact people are comparing him to Hitler is really retarded and shows why /co/ stagnates in mediaUnless the author really wants to hammer in that Doom is evil, so we're just getting another shitty commentary about propaganda from a Gen X/Millennial liberal arts student about political praxis they have no understanding of other than reading 1984 and was approved by decaying corpses of new deal liberals in charge of institutions because thinking about this stuff is a heckin' bigoted and nihilistic deconstruction so we should all just hopemaxx according to the snarky trans TV Tropes users
>>155996288>Reed probably being a typical egalitarian, communitarian and altruistic liberal like every American superhero who isn't primarily focused on beating bad guys and making sure others don't dieNo
>>155996288https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ReedRichardsIsUseless
>>155989661Literally depends on the writer's own beliefs. That's why it varies whenever a new one is writing him. Some love the idea of a benevolent dictator and others are against it by principle, so that will be reflected in his characterization.
