I remember having fun with this show in elementary school. Good news to hear.

Is this just fantasy?

Whoops, forgot the YouTube link.

Same! Although it started airing in 2006 when I was in 4th grade going on 5th, I thought it was a fun show and watched it until 8th grade.

As much as I am probably going to watch this, PBS Kids nostalgia is a very mixed bag, because not only was it a source of genuine childhood trauma for me (Between The Lions is not acceptable for a child to watch, full-stop), it's become clear in retrospect that most parents who felt the need to corral their kids' viewing habits to PBS Kids specifically were Republicans who were trying to cut them off from actual fulfilling entertainment. Most PBS Kids nostalgia is Stockholm syndrome to some extent. There's a reason we only ever talk about Cartoon Network and occasionally Nick or Jetix.

saw this today and my inner child was happy about it, used to watch the original show after school.

anyone remember that episode where the one kid ate cat vomit out of the cat vomit fountain?

I guess they really are going for the adult audience.

That's an extremely hot take, I'm gonna need you to explain that. That was my favorite show as a kid.

I was under the impression it was mostly just parents who couldn't afford/didn't wanna pay for cable.

Kek.

I'm going to preface my answer by saying that I have a background in horror and I do sincerely love exploring, documenting and archiving creepy media of all sorts, so I retain a natural curiosity about Between The Lions to this day because it's just such an anomaly of production.

It's probably the most expensive show in the network's history, with insanely rich set work, top-notch puppetry and multimedia components that probably decimate Sesame Street from the same time period. However (and this is a big however), the people making that show just did not understand how to implement offbeat or avant-garde imagery and concepts without frightening children.

The top scary moments from the show are well-denoted at this point - Dance In Smarty Pants and the disembodied mouth are the go-to for most people, and the scare factor on those alone should be enough to deter any parent from putting a non-puppet kid in front of it, but what I never hear discussed by anyone in this discourse is the musical skit Sven Said; that segment was so aggressively creepy to me that I vividly remember the intense fear I got hearing the opening notes and noping the fuck out of the player the first time I viewed it on their website, in the section with the PNGs of the gospel singer and the floating lips. I tried to get through it a few more times then and even revisited it via archive.org a year or two ago, but still haven't had the nerve to sit down and watch the whole thing. Nothing that has that kind of effect on someone should be shown to its intended audience of toddlers and up, even if the show also contains funny Full Metal Jacket parodies about vowels.

Same shit.

Anon, I think we just might be wired differently. I can't stand watching anything horror related, stemming from when I watched Chucky, the first 2 Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th at a cousins Halloween party when I was 6, and I had nightmares and needed therapy until I was 12. There is absolutely nothing scary about Between the Lions (in my opinion). It was actually one of the shows that helped me take my mind off the idea that movie serial killers were going to kill me.
