Just saw this in theaters, ask me anything
How did you see it if it comes out tomorrow?
>>156006397Theaters (at least the ones where I live) usually have new movies showing the night before they are officially out. My showing was at 5:00PM
Im going to see it after my shift today
>>156006381How many people were there?
>>156006534Very low turnout, like 8 people including me and a friend. Though it being a thursday and before the movie was officially out might be the reason why
>>156006381did you like it?
>>156006569Thursday should actually be when most screens are full, because they people who want to see it most will go the first day and have a full weekend to talk about it.
>>156006459That sounds vaguely illegal.
>>156006381Is it worth the money? I'm debating between this and Clayface.
I thought it was good. I liked the walk cycles.
>>156006640Its a solid 6/10 movie. I liked parts of it, the visuals for sure, and the scenes focusing on Curtis and the end fight were fun to watch. But as an overall package it just didn't do anything that interesting to make me really engaged with the story. The main character (whose name I can't even remember) is pretty unremarkable (along with most of the side characters besides the rat, the governor, and his assistant) and I cared more about Curtis surprisingly and his journey than what she was doing. Overall it felt like the movie had a lot of ideas but not enough time to develop them, even with this movie being the longest one from these guys it felt rushed at points. The final battle is again, neat, but the fight with the witch herself seems to be going somewhere interesting and climatic before it just kinda abruptly ends. Overall I just wish more of the cast was interesting
On a technical level, it's one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. That said, all of this effort is put into a by the numbers, nearly cliche, dark fantasy story about a sibling rescuing another sibling from an evil queen. The 3rd act is magnificent though. Definitely Laika's most violent movie.
>>156006381I thought it was pretty good, but I've seen reviews that said it could be the next animated movie to get a Best Picture nom, and as much as I'd love that...this isn't that movie.I have more pros than cons so I'll get the latter out of the way.>While some humor lands, a good chunk of the lighter parts felt very quippy and "ERM, THAT JUST HAPPENED" ish.The General dies and doesn't get any last words, which I initially was impressed by - they were being realistic with death right? But later on Septima, the AWKWAFINA CHARACTER, dies and gets last words. Like...what?!>The music isn't bad but nothing really stuck out to me>The story is a bit simple...with that said, the PROS:>Although the OVERALL story is simple, it's PRESENTATION helps keep it fresh>The acting is pretty good (yes even from Awkwafina's character, Septima. Speaking of...)>The "comic" characters, Septima and Dmitri, are actually very helpful, and most of their jokes land to some degree>There's a reveal in the third act that actually surprised me, and Prue responds in an actually realistic way>No suprise, the visuals and animation are fucking GORGEOUS. I'd recommend seeing this in a theater for the experience alone.>The action scenes are genuinely intense>Alexandra is a great villain. They give her a tragic backstory but they don't make her redeemable, which I ADORED>The movie's pacing is perfect. I was worried that with the book being so big they'd streamline too much but you get the exact amount you need.I'd give it an 8/10. Good enough that I'd recommend you check it out but not the hyperkino the reviews said it'd be. I'm honestly betting on Tangles being the animated highlight of the year.
>>156006381Is it anything like the book? If so I'll probably watch it
I liked it and appreciated it as a massive undertaking by human artists but didn't have a big emotional reaction to anything in particular, though I felt for Curtis after he was forced to kill. The biggest thing that had an impact to me was "wow, the things viewed as acceptable for childrens animation have really shifted with time." suicide, war, corpses, immolation, beheadings, screaming death via crow
>>156006381why does everyone have bags under their eyes?
>>156006929living in portland makes you very tired
>>156006918>The biggest thing that had an impact to me was "wow, the things viewed as acceptable for childrens animation have really shifted with time." suicide, war, corpses, immolation, beheadings, screaming death via crowThese were actually fairly typical until the 90's when parents went on a crusade about kids being exposed to violent video games, tv, and movies. But that generation has now moved on, and the current generation is getting things back on track, if Wildwood is any indication.
Ive come here tor report that the blond maid in the manor is the cutest character in the film
>Charlie Day shows up for some reason
I really wanna see this in theaters, but absolutely nobody I know has any interest in it and I'm not that interested in spending so much money on a movie ticket just to see it by myself and discuss it with no one.
>>156006949Wasn't it the opposite? 80s cartoons were very sanitized because of Reagan while the 90s cartoons gained more freedom by now being able to cover darker themes.
>>156007690that's true of tv cartoons, but movie cartoons went hard.>The Land Before Time>Akira>Heavy Metal
>>156006381my wife wants to go to raging waters for our anniversary but i ant knotts. what do u say
>>156006381>listening to jewtube while wageslaving>wildwood ad plays while the narrator shills between scenes>"...a film made by humans...">mfwShut the fuck up, Hollyweird. Get better writers and actors if the idea of Holly-Skynet scares you so much.
>>156006675Nah, plenty of places do selective thursday showings. It's just a very limited pre-premiere sort of thing.
>>156006929Hipster fatigue.
>>156006381I think they should've showed the MC in dolphin shorts and a little shirt more often. Also I'm surprised by how many people fucking died in the movie. Just realized right now the movie's PG-13 and not PG, but still.
Eh, I overhyped how it would play out after learning it was getting a PG-13. I like how it doesn't shy away from violence and lets you take in the world as an audience without feeling like it's designed for smartphones, but this is still very much adapting a young adult chapter book. Masterful presentation, but missing truly captivating characters like Spirited Away (which I think is an appropriate comparison).I don't even want to criticize this movie too much, because it feels like you're watching something special and that will be talked about for years to come, at least academically. I'm not one of these morons you'll see over the next few months spamming threads about how it's bad actually (just watch). As a casual watcher though? Doesn't hold a candle to Coraline. No other Laika movie holds a candle to Coraline.
>>156006381Describe the deaths in detail so I don’t have to see it in theaters please
>>156009087how about you describe your own death in detail so I don't have to see your posts please
>>156009100Hey just what you see pal.
>>156006459I was confused by this, as well. I went to buy tickets and saw they had showings today, so I just got back now.>>156006852I agree with everything here, except some of the emotional development and sub-conflicts felt too quick for me, like they were struggling to get all of the novel in. It's a fast 2 hours, to the point where I think it could have been even longer.I'd agree with the 8/10 rating. I overall enjoyed it.
>>156006381How wild were the woods?
>>156009087I counted one beheading
Saw it, enjoyed it. I'd compare it to the lion the witch and the wardrobe, though probably less quoteable. The weakest point in the film is dialogue but every other aspect is too strong to be dragged down by that too much. The last three Laika films I found super forgettable but I'd place this right under Coraline
>>156009087there's a point in the final battle where the coyotes launch incendiary bombs into the rebel bandits and you see dozens of people and coyotes beating themselves against the ground or running around as they burn to death
I really enjoyed how brutal it was, I wasn't expecting certain characters to die how they did at allhated that it was just extended anti-crow and anti-coyote propaganda
very surreal seeing places I used to go all the time when I was growing up in portland as miniature scenes>>156006929vitamin D deficiency from living in the PNW
>>156007041that's why i just see matinee showings. a few theaters near me have cheap tickets on my days off
