Did you see her movie /co/?I thought it was pretty good.
>>156024417>enters a world of talking, anthropomorphic animals >STILL doesn't "believe in magic" I get her arc was all about overcoming the feeling to rush into adulthood or whatever, but this just got exhausting past a certain point

>>156024870Yeah I think the magic made them white.
>>156024417Some of the violence was kinda brutal. earned that Pg13 rating. I particularly liked the coyote getting a knife in its head.
>>156024417I liked it. There were times where it was a little self-indulgent, but the work Laika did on their models and animations were fantastic. The animal characters were great, and Tom Waits as the head coyote was a stupendous choice. They nailed the voice acting overalloh... and the movie took 16 YEARS TO MAKE. 16 YEARS.

Good not great. From a technical standpoint it doesn't get any better it's pure eye candy. Storywise it's a little generic and tropey and the main character isn't very likeable. Def worth seeing it for the visuals alone though.Basically the Avatar of animated movies

>>156024417I did, it was fucking awesome. Ever since watching Coraline as a kid I always wanted to see a Laika movie that is more mature and brutal and doesn't shy away from blood so this was basically my wet dream come true. (heh, no pun intended) It's the kind of movie I always wanted, one that has a great and unusual style and is not made for kiddies.

It's pretty great. As usual the writing isn't the greatest and the story is pretty generic fantasy, but what saves it is the insanely impressive presentation and how gritty it is at times, they really pull no punches. Curtis is the best.
>>156030668It is based on a book series so I wonder how they compare as far as what's changed.

>>156024417>both threads on tv and co are basically dead>movie gets less discussion than the other slop released this monthDamn i thought people were generally hyped for laika stuff, guess im out of touch even with the non normalfag crowd. Anyway the art and animation was absolutely gorgeous, no stop motion movie will ever compete with this one in terms of that, but man the writing was pretty fucking weak. A lot of the dialouge was cringe and cliche, there were multiple plot points that didnt matter or didnt really go anywhere, a lot of the movie was just traveling back and forth between locations to get exposition dumped on, and the story itself was fairly predictable. This feels like a common trapping with passion projects that are in production for so long. Its like the ideas have been stewing in the directors head for so long he just keeps adding more and more to the plot. The movie felt like a mini series or a trilogy cramed into 2 and a half hours of screen time. Pretty disappointing for something i was so excited for, but atleast i can appreciate it for its art. Some would brush that off as style over substance but in this case id say the style is the substance. Also im not one to care that much about woke shit but i did roll my eyes everythime they inserted it into the writing, it felt really forced and out of play for a movie about magic and nature to have a drag queen story hour sign on prominent display in the opening.

I think my favorite bit was pru instantly knowing the dowager governess was full of shit when she's making her side seem innocent>>156033100it seemed so on the nose it was poking fun at those kinds of people in portlandsame with the western medicine line from him later on
>>156033191That seen was good, but then all of that energy was lost immediately after when the governess presented Mac's onesie, and Prue took it at face value without even a question.
>>156033339I imagine the fear and panic and grief at seeing "evidence" of him being dead was enough to cloud her mind
>>156032761it really was disappointing to see them as antagonists again
>>156033339You read too much into Peru’s words. She was saying exactly what was on her mind: that she didn’t care about what was going on in the woods and only wanted her brother back. She was not saying “I think you’re full of shit and secretly evil.” So yeah, when she saw evidence her brother was dead she took it at face value.
>>156024417I really want to like it more. It does 3 things good: the american fae aesthetic, the surprisingly viceral violence (though mostly bloodless), and of course the actual physical production itself was fantastic.Otherwise it has severe problems. I mostly agree with >>156031611It was obviously at minimum 2 movies smashed together, but someone saying its based on a trilogy makes so much sense. Dialogue was terrible for 90% of movie, with only some of well done stuff being the purposefully bad/dumb dialogue (everything the hippies said for example). The woke shit is mostly mocked and not paraded as a positive but that didn't make it fun. My biggest gripes with the movie though are:Every character, that isn't the two mains or the dowager, has nothing to latch onto. Only like, 4 even have names? I don't care about any of these super important characters like... eyepatch bandit, giant bird, or mail van driver.Prue's only purpose, explicitly said by characters IN THE MOVIE, is to go to a place and exist. The only things she "does" is fuck up, fuck up with style, fuck up on purpose, and accidentally win at the end. She's an observer in the story not the driving force. Her parents do more than she does from a plot perspective. And worse, at the end she acts all badass girl boss about fixing the forest and what did she actually do besides win through pretty much pure luck.Curtis, surprisingly, had much more agency in the story and he's so hard to watch. He has almost a negative character arc in that he sort of specifically chooses not to change? He actively chooses to continue being a puss even after having done what he does in the final scenes.
Yay black afro lesbian though!
>>156034876>Curtis, surprisingly, had much more agency in the story and he's so hard to watch.Kurtis felt like a much better protagonist, and i dont think his arc is bad, theres nothing wrong with both growing up a bit but not letting what youve done change who you are. Its ok to kill when you need too and also be a fuckin dork. I appreciate that kind of character. My main issue is thats hes deliberately written to be an annoying and hes still that for 99% of the movie. I guess that also goes with the other main issue i have with the film, the main girls arc. They set her up as a "dont grow up too fast" type of thing with her being a cunt to kurtis and the whole magic is le fake and gay attitude, then it just kind of goes no where. I wonder if the book had her go through a proper arc
>>156035045I wanted to stick my penis in her
>>156035075I want her and the governess to give the nerd boy a competitive blowjob.
>>156035162This but on one of the coyotes instead
>>156032228I read it in his voice
>>156035061Agreed. I was worried Kurtis' Arc was going to have him stop being a nerd and liking DnD since it "glorified violence" or whatever the critique is. But no, the post credits shows that he's still playing RPGs with his friends. Despite going through severely traumatic experiences for his age, he didn't let it it destroy who he was.Bit off topic, but I also can appreciate a movie that actually has the older sibling like their younger sibling from the get go. Too many kids movie has their dynamic start in the negative, and I was worried this would be the case here.
>>156035162every scene between Curtis and the Governess was peak /ss/, man.
>>156031904How would you feel if you had to govern a city full of Furries for the past 20 years?
>>156024417Is this based on a book?
>>156035557A trilogy, apparently. Yes.
>>156035061>i dont think his arc is badOh I'll agree on that part. And it's ok for him not to change, its more the way he chooses that bugs me. I'm going to mostly chalk it up to the way the movie itself ends I guess. Maybe there was more in the finale of the book that fixes it for me.
>>156035633Probably right. WHile I like the movie, it does rush the ending a bit. A lot of stuff even had to be pushed to the credits animations
>>156034876>the surprisingly viceral violence (though mostly bloodless)Really? That was actually one of the things I took the most notice of, how they don't shy away from showing blood. Even simple things like scrapes, bloody knuckles etc are a no-go for most animated features for a wide audience, but here it only takes like 20 minutes for that to happen. Even something as extreme as stabbing is not too crazy to show up in a lot of family movies, like backstabbings etc; but every time they make sure the sword or blade or whatever is squeaky clean. Contrast this to Wildwood where they don't just show every single weapon being visibly stained with blood after use, but even show Curtis process the fact he just took anothers life in real time as he sees his own reflection in his blood-stained sword
>>156035662Think they're refering to the big battle. While the protagonists clearly showed the blood in their respective fights, the Coyotes and Bandits getting torn up was fairly clean for how brutal the injuries were.
>>156035662>>156035697Also the other scenes with dead people like where they captured the bandit king, the bird queen, or quieting of the prison. Not saying we need squibs or rivers of blood. But they were missing.
>>156034876Oh, and to clarify a bit, I do like the movie. It's somewhere between a 6.5 and 7.5 out of 10 movie. I just want to like it more but can't
>>156035799Completely fair. now that I'm out of the honeymoon period of walking out of the theater, I too am much more critical. Definitely one of the best films this year, but still a 7.
>>156035307Oh my lord, yes. Who's the main one? Vlad? Mean bastard, I loved his wrinkly snout when he got mad. I want him to hold me down...
>>156035846MaksimI loved that the coyotes all had slavic names, very fitting for portland
>>156036111>Maksimwait, that was his name? I thought they were like, coughing or some shit everytime to get his attention.
>>156036168yeah that's his name, he's the movie's version of vlad from the book apparently
>>156035846him being enough of a chad to tank that entire crowd of bandits at the end and still be chasing down prue with a full knife block stabbed into his back was sick as hell
>>156031679For all the plot and characters in the film, I thought it was handled as well as it could be and added to the world. I personally don't mind getting to see different entities reacting to the situation presented to them in the form of Prue and Curtis being outsiders, gives depth to the world, which I thought was good as the fantasy setting feels unique and inherently mired in conflicts and politics that make it feel more lived-in than just "whoaaaa... welcome to the magical world of Cumpoohpa... ERM... did that rabbit just TALK? did that lady just move that plant with her MIND?"facetious comparison aside I'm thinking more Harry Potter "erm, you're a wizard harry" "I AM???"It's a really shame about what's happened to Portland now, and wild they're recreating a feeling from 16+ years ago long lost to performative politics and uproarious vitriol. Hard times. Also did you fellas know the website has interactable models from the film?
> Decided to read the book before watching the movie> Go watch movie> Feel disappointed Turning a 500+ page book into a movie was not a good idea. A mini TV series would have been better considering this is a book series.
>>156036861Is the story any better
>>156036861What dissapointed you about the comparison? This is why I DIDN'T read it desu, bc it's more about how well the movie can create the vibes of the book that stand out; part of that is character and their politics, which the movies succeeds at imo, but you'll never get as much time to flesh certain aspects or characters out while keeping a good pace.
>>156034876I mean I think what your saying has an essence of truth in how it effects my perception as a whole, but I don't think Prue rally girlbosses at the end about winning, really, it's iterated multiple time in the movie, that she IS an outsider and that this wasn't something that's her fault, but something set in motion well before her. If anything it's her actions as an individual coming of age, that FOIL the plans of (effectively) her surrogate mother that were laid out for her, things she had no control of but chose to take control of in the end for her ONE single express purpose: to save her brother. The other character besides those 3 are kind of there to give character to the Impassable Wilds and set the stage for their own conflicts, but the movie does a decent job of showing that the politics going on have been at play for a long time. Prue is not the focal of those politics until she is at the very very end, and even then she's just here to save her family. What I'm saying is that she literally IS an observer to the story of the Wildwood- the impassable wilds. It's not her home, but she has an unkowning connection to it, one that brings her into conflict with it and one she eventually succeeds at through her own desire and action to save her sibling. Then she goes home. Those politics aren't for her, but she the role she had to in the end to save what she wanted to save.
>>156036111Son of a bitch
>>156036927The first book in the series is mid, the second and third book are better.>>156036936The characters interactions and dialogue felt too short, and Curtis scene with Alexandria and the coyote army got cut short too.
>>156032228I'm looking for the Virgin Michael Bay vs. The Chad Travis Knight. Someone made it around the time Bumblebee came out, but I can't find it anymore.

They’re probably even more out of touch than normalfags if that’s even possible.>im not one to care that much about woke shit but i did roll my eyes everythime they inserted it into the writingI prefer it in this context where the movie takes place in a very liberal American city where that sort of thing would be prominent if you were walking around downtown. They aren’t awkwardly cramming it into places where it feels out of place. Plus it’s PG-13, so if parents get upset they’re retarded.
>>156032461The parents are very clearly hippies. That line is played for laughs, not because Laike is making fun of they/thems, but the idea of parents caring about something like that so early.
>>156037420>girlbossesI really only meant she girl bosses the coup. It really comes out of nowhere from a plot perspective. Its like, who cares at this point? The movie would actually have been better if she didnt do that and instead one of the other characters straight up said "dont worry about owl, we'll make sure he's freed" and then off she goes home. It would further solidify that shes not part of that world. As for the observer part, thats mostly my problem with it. There are great movies where the main character is primarily an observer, but shes treated much closer to a living macguffin (we'll chekovs gun) than a character. She's passed around from place to place until at the end she kills the bad guy with an ass pull. A very well telegraphed, expected, and satsifying one, but an asspull nonetheless. Its so close to greatness.
It came in third at the boxoffice, but only with $4.3M. Is that good?
>>156037991No. Not even going to make an excuse, it's not good.
>>156037991considering the only things that came out this week were the nathan fielder doc and clayface it's not greatbut laika movies never make their money back, especially not on opening weekends
>>156037991Wildwood isn’t their “trying to win back audiences” movie it’s their “not caring about the audience” movie. They’re at the acceptance stage of people not caring about their stuff grief. They will keep funneling money into movies until they get an Oscar. Ignoring Knight’s connections, they also have partnerships with universities and their animation programs, so they literally DO NOT CARE about the clickbait box office headlines.
>>156038065>>156035799>clayfaceI went to see both of these movies back to back. Clayface first, then Wildwood. Like i said, 6.5-7.5 for Wildwood, and I'd give Clayface a solid 7. I don't have enough confidence yet to say if I like Wildwood better or not. Which sucks so fucking much. Now, the genre matters a lot there. I mostly got what I wanted out of Clayface and it did better than I had expected out of it. Wildwood did the opposite.
>>156038172That’s a bummer, but I kind of believe it. It’s a shame Laika couldn’t hit a home run script and characters to match the time spent on their visuals. Despite the press, they’re not the only people making stuff though, so it’s not the end of the world for stop-motion hipsters like ourselves.
worth seeing this back to back after clayface or would it be too much?
>>156024417It don't come out where I live for another week
Just got back from my theater. Saw it with my mom and we both enjoyed it.A couple of things I liked:>Visually one of Laika's best works yet, the ending battle scene is honestly some of the best animation I've seen in a long time>The pacing is almost nonstop, it feels like the movie crammed a lot in its 2 hour runtime>The dark and brutal imagery, Laika did not shy away from showing death and there were some genuinely scary scenes, such as the coyote getting hit by the red mail van, only to get up and keep attacking, his face half covered in blood>The villainess was excellent, making her sympathetic but still a genuinely evil person, I especially loved what they did with her and Curtis, it felt genuinely creepyNow some of the things I didn't like:>I feel like more could've been done with the two leads, Prue's arc really didn't feel present and Curtis's arc, while passable, needed more to it>The dialogue itself wasn't the best, it felt too much like exposition>For the most part, I really didn't mind any of the woke bits. After all, its set in Portland and the characters that act woke look exactly like the type who would (like Prue's dad) so it was believable. However, the two gay couple (A lesbian couple hugging and a brief blink and you'll miss it gay couple hug) felt like it was there just to fill a quota. Also, I'm bisexual so its not the fact its gay thats the problem, just that it feels tacked on

>>156039283based>>156038172>I went to see both of these movies back to backSame. I had fun with both. I don't understand how people are bothered by it. It wouldn't feel like Portland without the woke. That's just the city.
>>156028914While I understand the desire to have a character look as beautiful as possible, I think doing so would actually detract from this film in particular. The way the characters look is meant to contrast with the fantastical world, making its inhabitants stand out when placed next to Prue and Kurtis (Curtis?). This also works in reverse, making both our main characters stand out as outsiders amongst the fantasy folk. Just look at the humans actually from the fantasy world, they look either very clean and proper (The villainess and the governor) or they'll look fantastically gross or ugly (The bandit king or the governor's right hand man).Like, imagine if Prue looked like the girl from Hexed. It just doesn't fit the aesthetics of the film.
I honestly forgot I was looking at stop motion puppetry for the majority of the movie. It's really insane how far the technology has come.
>>156039266>A lesbian couple hugging and a brief blink and you'll miss it gay couple hug.Surely those were just siblings. But you know what bugged me about that scene? Just no indication we gave a shit about those 3 people from the prison that didn't come back. All you needed was one or two people looking around worried or disappointed. >>156040413no i get it its just stupid and impractical. stop motion has appeal because it carries a unique visual style. when that style becomes so refined it basically disappears theres really no point. probably the best implementation of stop motion to both tell a story and carry a strong visual language is anomalisa. i dont think that movie would hit the same if it were done with cg>>156040438i mean i think people that become pro rendermonkeys to make photorealistic headshots are idiots, yes. if youre painting photorealistic fantasy landscapes or whatever thats a different thing, but becoming a master of doing what a camera can do is indeed fucking stupid

Laika left out the /ss/ dinner scene with Curtis and Alexandria from the book.
I like the movie, but the villain felt like she didn't really get her time to shine. The coyotes do all her dirty work. I can't tell if your supposed to feel relieved or saddened at her death. But she works more than well enough and has parallels to our MC, which is nice.,
>>156040519>tell a story and carry a strong visual language is anomalisa.>Anoma fucking lisaLmao you fucking turbo psued. Never reply to me again
>>156040519>anomalisaAnon your bait isnt supposed to be this obvious
>>156039283 (Me)I think Laika is too good at stop-motion at this point. While technically mindboggling, it registers no differently than 3D animation. The story itself should be good, but the writers were either lazy or cowards. Character arcs are half-baked and there's frankly too little focus on anyone in particular for the viewer to grow attached to them. This includes the side characters. By the third act, I was increasingly frustrated by all the missed opportunities. For a movie a bit over 2 hours, it still comes off as if far too many lines and scenes were cut from the final product to its detriment.
>>156041296Forgot to add, I can't stand how the story just happens to Prue. Kurdas (Fucked gay spelling, which they HAD to make sure you knew about with the name on the cup) legitimately is more active in this story than Prue. They really should have had him act as more of a foil to Prue. They clearly wanted to do this tale about growing up and letting go and such, but they didn't do enough work to have the story be about that. Curtis was clearly supposed to be an immature character who learns to grow up, in order to enhance Prue's character, which was the overly mature character who learns to allow the whimsy of youth into her life. They could've had Curtis achieve a certain level of competence and bravado by being groomed by the Governess into her right hand man/temporary substitute for her son (they'd keep the sexual undertones, it helps add to the idea of "false maturity") . This would give us time to learn about and attach to Curtis, the Governess, and even be used for exposition of the Governess' backstory. It'd also show a good man being seduced by the false promises of evil, only to later truly mature and choose good when he saves Prue from the coyote commandant. They would have to actually tell the audience more about him being a pacifist in the first act so that when he saves Prue, it's because he's come to the conclusion that violence is not in and of itself evil, it is merely a means to an end. And in order to have this all in service of Prue's story, they need to do a little more to build her up as someone who rejects "fairy tales". They did good with having her insist she's grown up while still acting like a rebellious teen. I think they fucked up with having Prue immediately hostile towards Kurdis. Crazy amount of sexual tension in this movie. I would fuck the bird general (who just goes by "General", I suppose) and the Governess.
>>156040519>no i get it its just stupid and impracticalart is never about being practicalit's about being art...what even is this retarded argument you're trying to spin?2d animation is also not practical, so what you're saying it shouldn't exist?dumbahh
>>156041115>>156041284I will defend that random anon. NO! It is (You) who has shit taste. He wasn't even calling it his favorite movie, he just it uses stop-motion in a way that enhances the story, which is obviously true. You two got triggered hard.
>>156041580>(Fucked gay spelling, which they HAD to make sure you knew about with the name on the cup)pretty sure that's just riffing on the "starbucks always misspells customer names for engagement points" thing.
>>156040732I think it's both. You are supposed to understand the grief that has consumed her and wish things had turned differently, since before everything she was a good woman. However you also need to understand crossing the point of no return leaves no room for redemption.
>>156041115>>156041284Wait what's wrong with Anomalisa, that movie is fucking fantastic.I do agree with the sentiment that there is something a bit unfortunate about stop-motion becoming so advanced it becomes harder and harder to distinguish from CG animation. I don't think we're quite there yet, I think you can still see their craft in the animation, but I personally will always prefer stop-motion animation that is a little more "imperfect", cause it makes you still see the hand of the animator in it. One of my recent favorites is Onions Frankelda, precisely because it's kinda rough around the edges, but it just makes you really see these as little puppets being moved around. A similar thing is being able to see subtle fingerprints in Aardman productions.
>>156024870i genuinely didn't see the mom as nonwhite until she speaks japanese at the end. they've got to be 1/4 jap at best, which often looks full white
Amazing movie, artistically flawless. If I may be annoying I'd say the third act was a bit messy narratively and I was slightly bothered by the pacing, how some character arcs where handled, and the ending didn't feel emotionally compelling to be honest. Regardless, fantastic film, I hope it wins at the Oscars this year.
>>156024417i really liked it, one or two moments were kind of wonky writing wise but didn't ruin it. i was gratified by how much violence there was in the movie. my mother compared the end battle to LOTR movie one which i think is a valid comparison.
Not sure how the theater managed a 7pm showing on Thursday. But my buddy and I watched it while out of town on a job. Kind of continued on our Laika streak since I watched Coraline and ParaNorman with him in theaters. But as expected, no one else was there for it.

The eyebag discourse had me searching.Everyone seems to have eyebags, with the only exception being Curtis and Alexi. Even the baby has them. The bigger issue is Prue has nasolabial folds, eyebags, and forehead lines (see Lars at the end). Other characters, even the adults, have 1-2 of these traits, but Prue has all 3. With the exception of Roger, but he's clearly meant to be older >>156032187.

>>156031679>>156034876>>156031679Many of you seem to think LAIKA crammed the whole trilogy into one movie Ă la Spiderwick Chronicles, but they only adapted the very first book. I'm with >>156036861 in thinking this story just doesn't benefit from a 2-hour movie runtime compared to a more expansive novel that lets moments breathe more. They had too much ground to cover and too many different Impassable Wilderness "factions" to cover, all while still getting Prue and Curtis's arcs across. And this is STILL after cutting out a good chunk of stuff like Curtis playing a larger role in getting in the Governess and Coyotes' good graces, taking the Bandit Oath, and staying in Wildwood as a lead-in to the following two books.
Ill watch it, its more of deciding when this week it will be best to go. Its pretty popular in my area
What are the other nominees for the oscars? Hexed, Toy Story 5, Forgotten Island, Hoppers... Wildwood is gonna win, right?
>>156039266Laika has always been a little weird with gay people in their movies. Like with snatcher crossdressing in the Box Trolls, the jock from ParaNorman having a boyfriend, and the fortune tellers who live downstairs in Coraline likely being a gay couple. Laika gets more of a pass since it's not propagandized like in almost everything else that includes that topic. Travis Knight might just have some sort of autistic fixation with it. It doesn't really seem like anything deeply sinister. In Wildwood, it was like a lesser version of the kiss in the Rise of Skywalker.
>>156048289I've never heard anyone pronounce Laika like that.>>156049353>Ray GunnBrad Bird doesn't have the pull for a strong campaign, even with Netflix backing him.>Iron BoyIt's the Little Amelie of 2027. It should win, but it's too French.I think Wildwood actually stands a chance. The Academy has been distancing itself from Disney. I bet they'll be giving it to different studios in the coming years unless Disney really wows them. Sequels won't cut it. They also love the "we've been working on this for 16 years!" shit.
>>156039266People just want to be mad. The two (2) gay hugs/kisses where a second long, no one made a big deal out of it, it's just something in the background like a mother hugging a child or a straight couple saying goodbye. And the Portland stuff was well within what one would expect from the context they were showing. I think it's fine to point out when companies are putting gay stuff in their products for brownie points but at some point it's just some people simply don't wanna see gay people existing period.

>my face when the fights were on screenSaw the movie and I loved it. Completely agree with the points other anons made about the story and the brutalities they showed with the action. I do think they ought to make the 2nd and 3rd book into a film; just feels like it need more time to truly open up. Cutting too much from the book might have hurt it more. I'm glad they didn't pull back from the fighting and the shock of it, being in a "children story."My theater gave me a copy of the book so that was sweet.
>>156046502>he doesn't think lolis with bags under their eyes are cuteNGMI
what's fucking crazy is that a huge talking point about this movie is the amount of blood and violence in it. i took both my kids with me, youngest one 6, so i warned them about this beforehand, and we just can't recall that much gore going on?? the battle was crazy, yes, but nothing that would really make any of us shocked and no imagery that "burned in", other than Curtis bloody sword reflection. is it possible that they nerfed it for UK theaters? or maybe i'm just desensitized.
I watched it yesterday so I can finally comment in the thread.Honestly, this movie was really good. I'm glad we didn't get another Boxtrolls. I don't have much problem with all the Portland stuff other than the fact that it really feels like they were just rushing through it to get to the Wildwoods as fast as possible. For the movie to actually start. The whole movie actually just feels really fast, for better or worst. There's definitely a lot of times where you thinking 'wow, you really need to let this moment breathe for a second,' and the movie goes 'we don't have TIME, NIGGER!" Which makes it strange that they dedicated like, four minutes to the coyote overacting. You coulda cut that, my man.I get the complaint that the main character looks like they're 32, and that's a failure of the art director, but it's also clearly an intentional choice that just didn't work out, and most of the characters are animals or weird DĂşnedains anyway. It's very Narnia, I'm surprised that more people aren't making that connection to it. The Dowager is very clearly, like, the White Witch, to the point where Pru even points out that she's not gonna fall for her tricks, and then falls for her tricks super hard. It certainly gave me flashbacks.Overall, I think I'd actually make the controversial ranking that this is their second best movie. Or at least a very strong third. Coraline and Paranorman are still very strong, but Paranorman is carried by it's third act.>>156050398It's not that bad, but it's also not, like, Disney. A guy gets his eyes gouged out. There's a decapitation later. Three dudes get shot. It never shies away from violence. If I was still a teen, I could see myself loving how it doesn't patronize me. These dudes are fighting for their lives.
>>156024417I wanted it to be so much better then it was. Looked like cgi more then stopmotion and none of the characters or story beats stuck out to me. They had a lot of violence but nothing ever really felt "creepy" or "surreal".

I liked it alright. Didn't like everyone having eyebags. Kind of felt like it should have been split into two films to help pacing. I can see this being someone's lifetime obsession.
>>156024417Is it better than the other laika films?
>>156041115>>156041284i'd accuse you of "popular thing bad" but i doubt you've even seen it dont hurt yourself reaching that hard for the contrarian stick
>>156024417Just saw it. Everything on a technical level is a 10/10 for me, especially the ending fight scene. It's honestly one of the most beautiful animated movies I've seen, full stop, and I admire and love that about it. That being said, I thought the story was alright. I was kinda disappointed by how the world of the woods wasn't exactly set up, in terms of each section/faction having time to be explored. Also maybe I missed something, but I felt like the reason literally everyone was at each others throats was also little hard to understand (seemed like it was mainly about dowager trying to fuck everything up to get her son back).
>>156051804The Ivy needed more explanation. Because it's asleep but it also protects the Wildwoods from outsiders? But it destroyed that entire civilization? But also Prue can control it because I dunno, it drinks blood? But Dowager also thinks she can control it with a blood sacrifice? We needed a wise druid to explain that more.
>>156024417I want to hear Alexandra's Lullaby again so badly, but it's still not released anywhere
>>156051872>But also Prue can control it because I dunno, it drinks blood?because she has the blood of a child born of magic
>>156051804And honestly I found Prue to be the weakest part, she's very uninteresting aside from her motivation to save her brother, for the most part she just says a lot of sarcastic lines, and is told she's "special" by a couple of characters, just cause (I know she was born with the help of magic, but it's still a lame thing to add. It's nice she was pretty resourceful in a lot of scenes though. Some of her dialogue feels like it from forspoken, with how ironic and detached she is, and its weird because she has no reaction to talking to that giant bird when she's in the car, but calls the mystics hippies and >so, they talk to a tree? in that meta ironic way where it's like the writers saying "look, we know it's stupid!". Other than her and the Akwafina rat, most of the characters are pretty good, but some have way too little screen time/presence. I literally forgot about the governor and his assistant, they're like an after thought near the end of the film to tie everything up, which sucks because I found them charming and fun to watch. I don't have that many problems with the movie though, in fact, my favorite part was how violent it could be. Lots of death, burning, stabbing, some swears. The coyotes especially looked were fantastic in terms of designs >>156051615better than their last three
>>156051872>But also Prue can control it because I dunno, it drinks bloodThat shit didn't really make sense to me, felt very mary sue

It's great and will flop because people are retarded.
>it's a "Laika pours their blood, sweat, and tears into a script and narrative nowhere near as good as the animation" episode>it's been on repeat for fucking yearsSeriously, it actually infuriates me how much I want them to succeed for their animation but literally no film beside Coraline has ever made me actually care about its cast and what is happening to them. Every time I rewatch one of their films I just watch it for the visuals and don't even think about what is happening in the narrative. I have never wanted to force myself to like a studio's filmography as much as theirs.
>>156051977Okay, but why does the Ivy respond to blood of magic children to begin with?
So am I the only one who dwelled on the plot point that the villain made a literal sentient robot and this just goes basically ignored? Also why the fuck were the parents selfish enough to have a second child when tbey fully understood what would happen to it?
>>156052225because the magic ivy's bullshit was part of the dowager governess' witchcraft plan
3 days and still no camrip? I guess people really don't care about this movie
>>156052288>Also why the fuck were the parents selfish enough to have a second child when tbey fully understood what would happen to it?They said they didn't expect to have another. Both looked like they were nearing 50. Dad was rawdogging his wife thinking they were both past pregnancy.
>>156049211Wait, so Curtis doesn't stay in the Wildwood in the movie? I guess Laika is serious about not doing any sequels and that plot point would have been too much of a downer.
>>156052347It was an accident but I dunno, man, if a witch told me that my infertile wife was gonna have two kids, and I already had one kid, I don't know if I'd keep rawdogging that. The witch clearly knows what she's talking about.
>>156049460The thing is that I actually enjoy the three examples you gave.>Never saw the Boxtrolls, but judging by the .gif, the crossdressing is played for laughs>The fortune tellers from Coraline was something ambiguous that you had to determine based on context clues>ParaNorman is honestly great gay representation, being the first in an animated film and also being a really good punch line for Norman's sister constantly trying to hit on the jock. I remember seeing it in theaters with my parents when ParaNorman first came out and everyone laughed when the boyfriend reveal happened. It was greatMy issue isn't that gay or LGBT things exist in the media I watch, I just want it to have meaning. Thats why I don't mind when Prue's dad says something woke. It has the purpose of informing us about his character.>>156049641You're right, some people just want to make a big deal out of nothing, however it doesn't change the fact that it fels a lot more tacked on than in Laika's previous films.

This leads to a major arc of the next two books where his parents are frantically searching the world for any trace of him and his sisters go into the Wildwood looking for him because the little idiot just disappeared without even leaving a post-it note.
>>156049211That was an another reason why I found the movie disappointing, they cut out most of Curtis scene from the book and focused on Prue the most. They couldn't even put him on the official movie poster, he was on the front of the book.
>>156052475You would just leave your family and friends with zero answer though.
>>156052429I'd have a harem of coyote wives till the day I died
>>156050398I mean, the movie cold opens with a suicide, and a lot of the imagery with the coyotes is pretty brutal.I remember the scene where Prue is getting chased by the coyote soldier, only for him to get ran over by the red mail van as being pretty intense. Especially when the coyote seemingly disappears for a few seconds only to practically jumpscare the audience as it attacked Prue, his face half covered in blood. Its PG-13 fits well, but Laika definitely pushes things here and there.
>>156052347>>156052416Still insanely stupid on their part. You're not even gonna wear protection?
>>156052481I think that would make the audience kind of hate him, so I get cutting THAT part out.
>>156039266>>156039335>>156049641I just kinda rolled my eyes at it and moved on, I don't like woke shit in general, but at the very least it didn't have a lot of focus
>>156052481>>156052527Laika also does not like doing sequelsAnyways, MAYBE the books will get adapted as a graphic novel (albeit they'll have more book accurate designs) in case people want a visual medium representation?Comics are like the direct to vhs medium and I say this as a fan
>>156052481This bothered me. The parents called the police over Mac's disappearance, and I'm wondering what they even told them. Prue would have been interrogated for hours, choppers would have been hovering over the woods, etc.Prue also insists her dad can't go with her, but she could have pulled him in as she did with Curtis. I know I'm overthinking it, but at least try to cross with a squad of gun-carrying cops. I realize after typing this that a hippy family from Portland isn't super pro-police lol
>>156049211i should have suspected this was a book series. that makes everything make so much more sense now. im going to go read the books now. im assuming the books also cover the governess grooming that poor fucker a lot more too? >>156052565>Comics are like the direct to vhs medium and I say this as a fanwhat does that make webcomics?
Movie has blood and gore but felt less disturbing then Coraline, the violence felt like something they did not to show the brutality of the world (that they never develop) but to seem "mature" compared to other animated films.
>>156031611>This feels like a common trapping with passion projects that are in production for so long. Its like the ideas have been stewing in the directors head for so long he just keeps adding more and more to the plot.what's weird is that it's based on a book, so I was hoping it would just stick to whatever story was in it. Have no idea how faithful it was though
>>156052515Ain't no condoms going to protect them from magic.

Hows it looking in the boxoffice?
>>156052820You can't have a bunch of people ambush the big villain; they'll just cut them down like fodder to show everyone how strong they are. You know how it works. It's magic.
>>156052827Bad. It's looking to be one of Laika's worst preforming films.
>>156024417I personally like Prue's design and believe the eyebags accentuate the lonely burden she carries in rescuing Mac from imminent sacrifice. She's desperate and tireless. (yes i'm ignoring that previous anon's point that she could've probably pulled someone else in with her... I think blaming it on time concerns is plausible)
>>156052581As in specifically adapting a story into a webcomic because it's cheaper than a film or even a printed comic?I dunno, billboard signs? My point is that comics are go-to for adapting things into another medium (that is visual) because they're cheap and not complicated They can still be good don't get me wrongThere are plenty of solid comics adapting novels and I'll outright say some of them are genuinely some of the best adaptations of the source material period but let's not kid ourselves
>>156052820>Also they knew she had to sacrifice the baby at the alter, why not have people wait there to ambush her?IIRC it's because they wanted the granny to talk to Alexandra and "find the good in her" which is retarded and the real reason was for Prue and Alexandra to have a 1-1

>>156052930It also just looks like a pretty dark and harrowing film. People don't want that in their fiction right now. They want wonder and hope and escapism. All anyone can talk about is how bloody it is and every trailer makes it look deathly serious.
>baby brother gets kidnapped by crows (very clearly a scary/intense scene) >chase scene happens >rock music playing what the fuck?
>>156052886>cut them down like fodderI had to read that twice because I thought you wrote "cut them down like toddlers".
>>156053107>put my brother down!!!>crows drop the baby from 150ft>DON'TPUTMYBROTHERDOWN!
>>156052985Sounds like it becomes retarded past tbe first, many such cases. Why the fuck did Laika think this was worthy of being adapted, I never heard of this shit ever prior to this film.
I wish Laika would put a fraction of the time they put into their animation into their writing. Fucking gorgeous and honestly daring movie, a pg-13 stop motion film that has a serious story is an anomaly
Can someone explain how the animal hierarchies work, the more I think about the less it makes sense. Why are seemingly all coyotes and crows subserviant to the queen for example? The sole animal we see of either species betray her was purely out of cowardice, he would have ran at any point if given the option and only helps because he was forced to. There's also stuff that feels weirdly inconsistent, like how all animals but crows seem to exist on a human level, we never see a crow demonstrate speech despite all other birds seen can. You can't even give the "they're dumb animals" justification.
>>156053529just don't tink about it m'kay
>>156053472Laika is a double edged sword, as a pet project of nepo babies any kind of failure is irrelevant but because of this they never write with any kind of heart or soul because they never actually get emotional about their films. Box Trolls and Early Man convinced me their scripts see a fraction as much investment as the animation.
>>156053529You don't want to be a race traitor, do you? If all the coyotes or crows join the queen, you better get in line.
>>156053135I mean, that is her plan.
>>156039967You're an idiot but also I don't entirely disagree.I'm fine with them CG-ing out the seams on the faces or the stands for the figurines, but basically every behind-the-scenes footage of the film involves doing everything on a big blue screen. The skies, water, and explosions are all CG, and so many of the characters are composited into the scenes instead of physically on the miniature set. At a certain point, all of these things work to undermine the impressive actual stop-motion work you're doing. Stop motion is at its absolute best when everything you're seeing is captured in-camera. For me, it's half the point of the medium.
I don't like the hag-ifying of young protagonists, so no
>>156054127Lil bro just you wait till you realize how many characters were full on cgi since The Boxtrolls at least lole.
>>156050325It's not just that. She looks 30. Violet is an example of a girl with eyebags that still looks cute
>>156025070I'm kinda wondering if this wasn't made by asians now...everybody knows they wish they were white.
>>156054205This looks significantly worse, like she's fucking 50 and trying to pretend she's still young
>>156054270t. shoe man
>>156054205You're outta your mind, you just like Violet.
>>156028940>B-b-b-b-but little kids won't want to see our movie if some celebs they don't know or care about aren't in it, speaking in their normal voice instead of actually voice acting! And everybody knows the more money you blow making a movie, the more money said movie is GUARANTEED to bring in, right? ...right?
>>156054191based retard
>>156054270Wow...I was the only one talking about Violet's old-lady face when that movie was new. Everyone else was gooning over her. You can probably still find my posts in desu.
My only problem with this movie was the pacing and Curtis.Other than that, it's great
>>156054205That looks way worse. Not that I don't think Violet is cute mind you.
>>156053583Early Man isn't made by Laika, it's made by Aardman
>>156054730I always confuse it and Missing Link for some reason.
>>156052288Ah ah. Its a literal sentient robot that decides to off itself by pulling its own magical heartbeat gear out of its chest while standing naked on a balcony so it can fall and crush itself on the cobblestones below. All because it discovered it wasn’t a real boy.Why would you need to know more information about that? Heck, its not like the gear was taken then disappeared from the movie or something.
>>156024417No, because I'm autistic as fuck and there's too much social stigma around 30-something men going to animated movies.
>>156054205>Barbara Stanwick and I used to take the trolley!
Coyote bad guys have WW1 bolt action mauser rifles and catapult artillery not to mention tactical high ground advantage. Should be able to steam roll an enemy composed of sword and shield Scots sheep herders and Irish farmers. Commander decides to send the bulk of his riflemen to engage in close combat with an enemy using their bayonets at the mercy of sword and shield thus removing all tactical advantage. Evil duchess lady could've used her crow minions to sacrifice baby a lot quicker and easier too lol
>>156055805>Scots sheep herders and Irish farmers.too many negroes mane
>>156055606Bro, I saw this movie while wearing a Hatsune Miku jacket; you worry too much about what people might think of you.
>>156054270
>>156055805I thought they used muskets, not bolt action rifles?
>>156056323they're breech loading rifles, not muskets we also see the piddock mansion guys have single action revolvers as well so they're pretty securely in late 19th century tech-wise
>>156031679Same
Were there any kids in your showing who giggled at Alexei's buttocks?
I for one think the baggy eye loli is cute. Anyone who's not a bot should be able to to tell the difference between an art style that's unusual and an art style that is maliciously ugly.

>>156024870>>156025070One of my friends is half Vietnamese yet looks completely white
>>156052762Awkwafina's in this movie? I ain't gonna watch it.
