What's your favorite segment? Mine's probably The Shinning.(Also feel free to talk about the 3 Treehouse spinoff episodes and Thanksgiving of Horror if one of your favorites is for some reason one of those.)
>>156024459Can we talk about the non treehouse simpsons Halloween episode from like 10 years ago
>>156024581No it's a regular episode of the show. So other than saying I liked it there's not much else to say.
>>156024459I'm David, I'm Grandpa!
>>156024459that's a pretty fucking good oneI love how they took the "the helpful groundskeeper gets axed as he comes to help" thing from the Shining and just.. kept repeating it, in the next two segments. Best part is, if you haven't seen the movie, it's still funny.
>>156024754hi* David
>>156025202Willie's line after it happens the third time id always my favorite.>I'm bad at this.
>>156024459The Lisa Death Note episode.
Skinner actually felt pretty intimidating in this scene
>>156024459There's No Business Like Moe Businessliked the It remake they did too... it was interesting>>156025212Hi, Animatronio!

>>156025870You can hear Milhouse get chopped up in that one.
>>156027582>>156025870we both know these children have no future
>>156024459the one where mr burns is dracula
>>156027886“Well if it isn’t… little boy”
>>156024459The 3d homer one is still very novel and hilarious to me.
>>156024459I don't think it's the funniest, but I really love the first Treehouse of Horror for how much more surreal the tone and imagery was. The haunted house segment that kicks it off is really memorable to me because no other segment really felt like that ever again.Treehouse of Horror V is probably the best overall though, all three segments are fucking hilarious and memorable. The time travel segment is probably my favorite out of that one just because of how much they play around with the premise, you can tell they were having a blast writing it. I don't think it counts as a proper segment, but the ending with the "fog that turns you inside-out" comes so far out of left field it gets me every time.
>>156028143Naw, the best overall trilogy is IV. The Devil, the school bus and Dracula.
>Hey everybody! I'm a stupid moron with an ugly face and a big butt and my butt smells and I like to kiss my own butt>Wait a minute...
>>156028143DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING?I'LL TOUCH WHATEVER I FEEL LIKE
>>156028178I was actually going to say that IV and V are really close for me but deleted that sentence before posting. The show was just firing on all cylinders then.
>>156024459>XXVIII MMM...Homer>III Clown Without PityYou see, the problem with treehouse episodes is that it is almost always parodying something that is popular or well known, and really really relies on you knowing the thing id parodizes. Like all the SW parodies rely on you watching Star Wars. When it can stand on its own, without an inkling of the source material, those are the good episodes.
>>156025364>>156027170XXXIII was surprisingly good all around. The Babadook parody was actually creepy at times.
>>156027170>Lionel Hutz' office in the background:(
>>156028143>>156028178>>156028306Agreed. IV, V, and VI are the absolute peak.

>>1560281071 month before Toy Story btw
>>156028306>>156029853Easily the peak of the old stuff. The newer horror specials like Not It are quite good too.
Lisa is a bitch
Hard to pick just one. As much as I like Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace and Homer3 from VI I never really cared for Attack of the 50ft Eyesores.
2, 3, and 4 are peak, 5 is the most overrated
>>156035314Even with the Monkey's Paw segment I think I prefer the atmosphere of the original like >>156028143 put it over the second one, though not by much.
>>156028143They went with a completely different color palette in that episode compared to what was normal for the show and it makes it immediately stand out. Mostly darker more washed-out colors and super saturated ones for certain lighting effects, like the reds and oranges in Kang and Kodos' ship. It makes the whole thing feel almost dream-like.
>>156024459>I PAID FOR A COLLOSSAL DONUT AND I'M GONNA GET A COLLOSSAL DONUT.>You don't scare us.
>Ya've mastered a dead tongue, but can ya handle a live one?!
>>156024459It's this one and the Raven segment for me, it's funny to have Homer speak in that ridiculous 19th century romantic poetic verse. It still feels perfectly in character because of his delivery, it's amazing.
>>156038391The Raven, to me, is one of Dan's more underrated performances, especially this bit where he seamlessly goes from a dramatic delivery befitting a more serious adapation to "annoyed Homer" on "Take thy beak from out my heart and take thy form from off my door."

>>156024459>3 Treehouse spinoff episodes and Thanksgiving of HorrorNani desuka?
Lisa is a bitch!!
>>156045102Dental plan!
>>156045013For the past few seasons, every two years they've done a "Treehouse of Horror Presents," a separate Halloween episode not bound by the usual TOH format:>Not It: a half-hour parody of guess what>Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes: anthology specifically parodying Ray Bradbury stories>The Revengening: this year's, a half-hour "I Know What You Did" parody that canonically brings Apu back"Thanksgiving of Horror" predates this, and was obviously Thanksgiving-themed horror segments.
>>156045144I didnt know about those. Sounds fine but why do another tangentially halloween themed thing when the main one has been seriously lacking for years? As in, sometimes the segments were not even horror/halloween related (Mr and Mrs Smith parody comes to mind). That said, I kinda liked the idea they had of a canonical Halloween episode (forgot the name). The problem I had with it was how after 30+ years they suddenly remembered Lisa is supposed to be 8 years old and was an annoying scary kid the whole episode
>>156045205>Sounds fine but why do another tangentially halloween themed thing when the main one has been seriously lacking for years? What part of "not bound by the usual format" went over your head?>The problem I had with it was how after 30+ years they suddenly remembered Lisa is supposed to be 8 years old and was an annoying scary kid the whole episodeYou crazy? It's always a positive when they write Lisa properly.
>(calling the estate agent) Mr. Plute, Homer Simpson here. When you sold me this house, you forgot to mention one little thing: YOU DIDN'T TELL ME IT WAS BUILT ON AN INDIAN BURIAL GROUND! ... NO! YOU! DIDN'T! ... Well, that's not my recollection ... Yeah? Well, all right, goodbye! (hangs up) He says he mentioned it five or six times.
>SHUSH!! SHUT UP! Quit trying to push us around! Stop saying those horrible things and show some manners!>...Look at me. I've never been so angry. My hands are shaking.>-Better than your eyes bursting, eugh.
>newest Treehouse of Horror is directed by THE David Silverman we are so BACK
>>156047855What are they referencing this time around?
>>156045205I mean Not It and Revengening are really good. I also really like Thanksgiving of Horror just for the novelty of making a treehouse of horror themed around Thanksgiving.
>>156024459>Clown Without Pityand the toasters been laughing at me gets me everytime
>>156048544They've been describing the segment at the bottom of the image as a cross between Freaky Friday and Pet Sematary.
>>156048648>Pet Sematary.I never understood this, the church doesn't even think animals have souls they're never going to ordain them
TOH is so consistently good throughout the years that asking someone to name their favorite segment on the spot almost feels like being a smart-ass. It's like the one valid reason to watch Zombie Simpsons. For me it's Nightmare Cafeteria tho.
>>156048765>the one where homer is paraplegic and farts to communicate>the one where homer eats his own body>the one where homer becomes the blobYeah, valid reasons alright
>>156047855Shame the TNBC part will probably just be a short credits segment.
>>156049550The latter two are nowhere near as bad as the first one.>>156049601It's the intro.
>>156049606I know. It could be a whole segment. Missed opportunity.

>>156049550those ones are still good? the avatar one is the worst one imo and even that one is just ok
Not the biggest simpson fan but i do like the shining segment alot to, but i will admit i used to watch Treehouse XII house of wacks often as a kid since seeing a naked marge turned me before i found simpson porn and starting to jack off to her that way so i guess i go with that for sentimentality sake (and XIII for giving us sexy cat marge but im just letting my dick talk at that point)

>>156052094Nta, but Homer eating himself and the Spider-Man one are truly terrible.
The best individual segment for me is Bad Dream House. The best overall episode is IV with V only missing out because I loved the wrap-arounds.
>>156025364This episode proved that we could have amazing simpsons 34.
>>156038391>>156038497Homer being a goofball doesn't necessitate him being a retard, but yeah the raven segment was one of his best performances. It was almost necessary that he swing from one end to the end just to remind people this is supposed to be parody .
>>156049601I was... underwhelmed, to say the least.
>>156044556spankable
>>156028143I still think Bad Dream House is the best segment. Way too underrated. Even Marge goes from being afraid and wanting to leave to saying the ghost has to get along with them, and Bart demanding the apparition to make the walls bleed is priceless. It comes to the only possible conclusion: the house would rather commit sudoku than live with them.
>>156058023The Night Gallery homage is next level.

>>156052932I never have but when I saw this I was like "I kinda get it"

>>156063926I'll agree that the autocannibalism one was good, but the paralysis-into-Spider-Man one was just... beyond weak.
>>156061271It’s James Earl Jones, who could even compare?
The whole bit is less than a second, but Bart and Devil Flanders casually greeting eachother in IV is peak Treehouse of Horror to me>Hey Bart>HeySo brief and so hilarious, it perfectly encapsulates the quality of golden era Simpsons
>Bart: Hey, that's just Pong, man. Get with the times.>Homer: Marge and I played that old game before we were married.>Kang: (put out) Well, we did build this spaceship, y' know.>Kodos: Anyone from a species that has mastered intergalactic travel, raise your hand!(they raise their tentacles. After a moment, Bart raises his hand, but Homer slaps it down.)
>>156024459>urge to kill fading...fading...faaading.>RISING!...>fading...fading..>...gone.
>>156028143>>156058023Going through the thread and then reading through the synopses, I think I ultimately agree with these posts. IV and V are just way too fucking stacked and Bad Dream House is a really simultaneously funny and surreal segment that stands out on its own.
Well, if your plan was to make Serak the Preparer cry, mission accomplished.
>>156025364>>156028640>>156045205After this episode I would argue most of the new Treehouse of Horror episodes have been decent to good. And the extra ToH episodes manage to mostly be good too. It's like they got inspired again.
>>156068137This year's was poopshits. Poopshits from an assbutt. The first segment was a parody of Slip. Why the fuck would anyone parody Slip? Three people watched it. Me, my wife and the poor unfortunate sap unlucky enough to have had to edit it. Down to the black best friend, it was a direct parody of a show nobody has ever heard of and nobody ever watched. Zoe Lister Jones' titties didn't make it watchworthy. I did get a kick out of that asshole, Jeff Probst, at least, but that was it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byMfXij3tBI
>>156066569lol
>>156028143This episode used to scare me as a kid. Specifically when the wall in Bart's room was moving back and forth. I wasn't phased by the blood at all, but the walls moving bothered me. Didn't help that I also grew up in an old creaky farmhouse. With a graveyard at the top of the driveway.
>>156024459The new one was pretty good. Weak first episode but I like the Pet Semetary meats Freaky Friday.
>>156066615I noticed a lot on my rewatch this year, and another anon pointed it out in this thread, Bad Dream House does a lot of cool coloration (so does Hungry Are the Damned). It's something those first few seasons of show would do a lot. Messing with coloration and different lighting. It makes for some cool scenes.
>>156061271>>156065224Of course it's kino because JEJ is reading it. But also having Dan read the actual spoken lines in Homer's voice really takes it to the next level. The juxtaposition of their voices is perfect. Like >>156038497 pointed out.Hearing phrases like "night's Plutonian shore" coming from Homer Simpson is ridiculous.
>>156044320>>156044556Based
Gotta go with Homer 3d.This shit blew my mind as a kid. The ending was also probably the most bold and shocking in the series. Seeing homer get trapped in the real world almost felt like a fate worse than death.
>>156071029I remember after that episode aired there was a widespread rumor that a Simpsons movie was in the works where Homer would be trying to get back to the Simpsons world. In retrospect it's really weird that rumor proliferated off of a Halloween episode.
>>156071059Simpsons fans have always been crazy so I'm not too surprised by that behaviour
>>156071059To be fair, people going through that much effort to create a 3D model and then integrate it into the real world was such a wildly divergent pipeline that I can't blame people for speculating that there were plans for the assets in the future. Realistically, though, it's most likely that the 3D modeling itself was meant for a combination of toy designs and to help standardize character sheets within the show bible for drawing into 3D forms. And a lot of what that episode achieved had been fundamental to the development pipelines of the show for the last 20 years
>>156071059>>156071029Part of what really makes it stand out is that the segment feels less like a conclusion and more like the start of a story. There's no real punchline besides Homer deciding to check out erotic cakes. It's not comically bleak or tongue in cheek like most Treehouse of Horror endings. "What if cartoons became real life?" is the kind of premise that started a lot of movies during that period
>>156071059I don't remember that at all!

>Before last year’s Halloween show, I warned you not to let your children watch. But you did anyway. Well, this year’s episode is even worse. It’s scarier, more violent, and I think they snuck in some bad language too. So please, tuck in your children and… Well, if you didn’t listen to me last time, you’re not going to now. (smiles and waves) Enjoy the show!

>>156078708Oh you.
>>156024459This scene in the Treehouse episode felt like a better interpretation of that scene in The Shinning and wonder if the screenplay or the novel that is was loosely based off of. It was a much better reveal than the wife flipping through the pages seeing the decline mental spiral the husband having before going on the murder spree.

Well, class, the history of our country has been changed again, to correspond with Bart's answers on yesterday's test. America was now discovered in 1942 by "some guy", and our country isn't called America anymore. It's Bonerland.

>>156096018yeah they posted the link without buying it to make it link to the simpsons website so someone squatted it. (though the owner has a good argument for keeping the site since the site's name is so generic).
I did a marathon of the first 13 Treehouse of Horrors and realized the obvious: The show lost its soul at the exact moment when Matt Groening decided that the drawings should be as stiff as a brick and on-model. All the good writing in the world cannot save the show when the drawings are so plain and boring. This is best exemplified by seasons 7 to 9 when the writing was still somewhat sharp but the animation was working against it, so even by then you felt like the show was on its last legs.
>>1560244593, 4, 5 and 6 are ones where I enjoy all three segments. Love marathoning them. Also Love Citizen Kang from 7, but the other two segments I felt didn't do as much with the concepts as I would have liked, even if they still do have some great laughs.

You had to be there for bartmania...my english teacher did what they all do around this time of year and showed us the raven clip from TOH. it kinda struck me as weird because it was the mid 2000s and the Simpsons were fading but not quite gone. Well then again people were singing the Spider Pig jingle so...reminiscing it's fascinating; even my niece and nephews kinda got into them for a good while when FXX was doing its ESE marathon.
