Any benders vanishing means that the workload of the remaining bending brigade members becomes much more heavy and straining. With fewer numbers, it's harder for them to fight back against sandstorms. My working theory on what causes the apocalypse is that it'll be revealed how Asami's factories are actually storage facilities. They still function like factories but their true purpose is to collect and place into immediate storage all the extreme excess amounts of spirit energy not because they're extracting it but because since Korra will not for the life of her close the portals and stubbornly insists that forced co-existence among humans and spirits is possible despite the countless evidence that demonstrates that's not at all the case, they build the factories as sort of a band-aid approach where since they have the spirit energy anyway it powers the city and Asami gets a tidy profit from the government labeled under "maintainence and repair" but they realize that all these factories cant realistically store all that much power. Now, I would prefer Asami being an evil venture capitalist but since we're going for nuance here it'll be revealed the factories were more Korra's idea and Asami was just the one who built them to see if the plan would work until Korra gets Asami killed probably by accident because Korra will be the one who has tunnel vision about this but the general public will blame Asami. There are only 3 episodes left of the season so this is my last theory.

I want Asami to be evil more then anyone but I also know Bryan and Mike are retards and don't understand turning her evil is not only easy you can also make it canon to her personality and have it make total narrative sense. See, Last Airbender made a really straight forward plot where Zuko overtime began to realize his father is a total fucking retard who doesn't actually care about being the Fire Lord which is why he throws the title of it in the garbage giving it to Azula who did nothing to earn it because Ozai just didn't want Zuko to have it. This then begins Zuko going thru a 5 stages of grief story arc which leads to him getting what he wants but he's still unhappy because it dawns on him that his father has no critical thinking skills outside of just being the biggest dicked asshole possible. Now do that storyline, but in reverse. Asami sees the novelty of being the Avatar's travel companion but eventually realizes that she can either being a profitable business woman or the Avatar's GF. If you wanna apply it here, you can have it be revealed that this relationship was entirely transactional and Asami was just really good at lying which quite frankly messing with Korra's emotions like that and lying about it for years would be the perfect reason to crash out so violently it dooms the human race.
