AAUUUGH FUCK
>>156108030>>>/lit/
>>156108030Alright this is a sign to finish my Thunderbolts fic I’ve been procrastinating on
>>156108057Yeah, that probably the best place for it.
>>156108141Actually I can’t cause AO3 is down. Fuck
>>156108030I’m struggling to finish a chapter, I don’t what direction to go and the encounter is similar to one that occurred in a previous chapter.
>>156108141>>156108250Why are you relying on an existing IP and on a website to do your writing?
>>156108250For a whole fucking month, at that.
>>156108280Practice
>AO3 going down just as november is about to beginsomeone took that retarded challenge way too seriously it seems
>>156108314You can practice without relying on existing IPs or websites.
>>156108030Good thing I have a backlog of RWBY fics to read on ff.net but now I can't update my own story. This blows.
>>156108280Because I post my fics on AO3. I mean I have a book I’m writing but I’ve been dealing with a bit of writers block so I figured writing for fun would help me out. I’m just gonna brute force or whateverBesides I like writing fanfics. It’s fun and I like interacting with commenters who aren’t bots
>>156108406I use the IPs for practice I discuss my writing here. >You can practice without relying on existing IPsAnd you can wipe your ass with leaves but I doubt you would if given the choice to use toilet paper.
>>156108280>Why are you relying on an existing IPBecause people like writing about shows, games, etc... they likeLike for example say you like a character but you feel they were underutilized you can write a story to give them more stuff>and on a website to do your writing?Because people like to share their stories with others and see what did they think
>>156108432So guaranteed feedback?>>156108480You're using recycled toilet paper.
>>156108670You didn’t answer the question because you wouldn’t use leaves. Don’t be dishonest, it just makes people hate you.
Crossposting master race wins again.
>>156108670I guess. I work best collaboratively imo so talking to my friends about my original stuff, or guys on here about fics helps get my creativity in gear
Zoom Zooms need to go back to Fanfiction.net, I honestly prefer it.
I've saved the only two whole Squiggas from AO3, assuming that there is where they've only been posted. >>156108406>You can practice without relying on existing IPsooooouuuuuugggggghhhhhhhh based
>>156108685Your analogy was incredibly dishonest.>>156108726Makes sense. I do the same, but I write original works and share in person with friends. I personally find that using existing IPs presents more of a hindrance and comes with more baggage.
>>156108778>need to go back to the site that has been coded on granite and to this day has no tagging system so you have to waddle through trash to reach a semi decent fic
>>156108778Man, is this a troll post?Everytime i update i get multiple comments complaining that they cant see the newest chapter
>>156109113I see. I have a group chat on Instagram with some friends I’ve shared my stuff with and it helps. Even talked to my Mom and Sister about it too, especially cause my Sister has written her own book (so proud of her)For me I like writing pre existing characters because I like exploring the characters I love while trying to be as true to them as possible. My Thunderbolts fic for example explores John Walker’s relationship with each of his teammatesOr I have a ship I enjoy and want to get out there. I have several fics of Terry McGinnis and Inque, Noir Peter Parker and Felicia Hardy, and Albedo and CharmcasterI do have one original story set in an existing world: Star Wars. About a Jedi and Sith having a Romeo and Juliet style romance during the Prequel Era and into the later era’s. I’ll admit I like that the most because it’s a mix of original stuff and an existing IP (I’m also a big Star Wars nerd so I get to have my own little mark in that universe)
>>156109145You like touhou. It doesn't get any faggier than that.>muh tagsLook at all these tags! I love ao3!
Feels great to be a ponyCHADOur fic site still up n' running good
>>156109893AO3>you can filter out tags you dont want to seeFF>sorry no tags, got flashbanged by idk pegging in one chapter of something you were enjoying? too fucking bad!
>>156109911There hasn't been a good new pony fic in 6 years. And even the story I'm thinking about took a nosedive.
>>156109911>Our fic site still up n' running goodit's not a hard task to take care of a graveyard
>>156109921There's a big upside to this>If a character is mentioned in a fic they're probably a major or at least secondary character vs having a singular appearance >Crossovers are 1v1 so if you wanna find some you don't have to wade through a thousand megacrossover prompt fics
>>156109911FIMFiction is the best fanfic site on the internet and it's not particularly close. From the tagging system to the formatting options to the search options I'd argue it blows everybody else out of the water, including AO3.I've always figured that whoever runs the site should license the source code out to somebody else so that it can be used for a more general fanfic site. That, or they should start such a general site themselves.
WTF Why do I get the feeling that this is some drama to do with pro-shipping/AO3 being "anti-Palestine"
>>156110452Damn, what the fuck happened?
>>156108280I don't know how to get my original book published (in a way that would earn profit)
>>156110148we need a tag for mega crossoversI don't know why autists make them, crossovers only work if the reader knows every part, at least with passing knowledge, so the bigger the crossover, the more niche it becomes
>>156108778Look man, as someone who still uses FF.net even I gotta admit the site barely fucking works. Trying to upload a fic is a hassle and even after it’s been submitted half the time someone clicks on it they get hit with an error message that says the chapter doesn’t exist.
>>156111059They write the fic for themselves primarily.
>>156111069for some godforsaken reason FF.net publishes works under 3 different URLs depending on if you navigate to it by clicking 'next chapter', navigate to it by manually selecting the chapter number from the drop-down list within a work, or navigate to either the first chapter or most recent chapter from browsing a list of works. Any given number of these URLs might hand you back a 404 for every chapter uploaded in the past ~2 years.
RETVRN
how did FF fumble it so hard
>>156111329They never bothered updating the site or implementing new features over the years until eventually all support became functionally nonexistent.
>>156111329same thing as tumblr really. never fight the porn makers. lemon purges in 07 (or thereabouts, maybe as late as 09) caused a bunch of communities to move to wattpad or to dedicated fanmade fanfiction sites that later died (HPFFA for Harry Potter and something else for naruto that i cant remember, those were the big 2 for fanfiction at the time). No one liked wattpad because the website gives you cancer for looking at it, so when AO3 became an alternative everyone jumped to it, and then eventually as fansites died everyone from those communities also converged back into AO3.
>>156111293That’s so fucking incompetently convoluted that of course that’s what they decided to do.It’s not even consistent. I’ll check my latest story, get the message, then check back in an hour and it loads just fine.Fucking useless website.
>>156111525dont even get me started. every chapter in a story has a fucking diceroll as to how many of the most recent chapters it actually sees. for a story with 94 chapters, the navigation list on chapter 1 might only show chapters up to 92, the navigation on chapter 2 might only show chapters up to 88, and then chapter 3 might show 93 chapters, and so on. about once a month they update every old chapter - but heres the kicker - sometimes when they reroll the dice a given page might lose visible chapters anyway, like chapter 3 going from showing 93 visible chapters out of 94 down to only 90.
>>156110452>>156110993It's probably from the php fuck up
>>156110452Pro-Ship, the rise of Malfoid, Anti-Palestine... either way, this feels targeted.
>>156111619What a cluster fuck that all was.
>>156111562>>156111293Oh, so that’s why that happens. I always wondered.
I'm so fucking pissed that Fictober et al will completely lose momentum during all this downtime. I was really looking forward to posting my entries on the 31st.
>>156109113>Your analogy was incredibly dishonest. No it wasn’t, you made a retarded point and when that was highlighted you had to avoid it. And now you’re making excuses.
>>156108030Ironic, this is the same week I started a Batman mini-fic
>>156108778enjoy your bots, fag
>>156112665I lucked out and decided to do Inktober instead of the writing one.
>>156112720I'm currently hard at work on the 9th book of my big sci-fi story, haven't really written fanfiction since starting it seven years ago.
>>156112720That is lucky, though I've seen plenty of people posting art for various events at AO3 (Kinktober, etc), and they're screwed too.
>>156111319Did they fix file uploads?
>>156109921>uou can filter out tags you dont want to seeif they bother to put a tag for it there are many cases where they didn't
>>156112758Name the series
>>156112995TechnocracyI hope it can get out into the world a little, I think the average Anon would like it.
>>156113003I can only find books about technocracies. Stupid google.
>had a chapter I wanted to upload on HalloweenFuck.
>>156113086I mean, here, I had a website built to house it:https://www.cashoultz.com/The whole first book's up in the Story section. I serialized it starting this past January and just ended last week. I'm going to start selling the e-book on the site as soon as Zoek gets my e-commerce off the ground, and I've also got some magazines and journals and websites where I have connections to get reviews. The second book's going to start serializing this coming April, I figure I'll give it six months to see if I can amplify my audience significantly.
>>156113223Very nice
>>156110365ao3 has better tagging than fimfiction and ao3's formatting is very powerful
>>156109893These tags are like walking into an asylum. Pure mental illness on display.
>>156114238There are quite a few people who take pride in making their stories and their tags as depraved as possible. Edgelord stuff, I think.
>>156108406Using a known work to practice your writing is the same as musician doing a cover. Nothing bad about it
>>156112758I started writing original novels a couple years ago and then made the stupid decision to go back to fanfiction for a bit.
>>156109113Share your original works, Anon
>>156111619AO3 uses Ruby on Rails though, not PHP. Rails is a decrepit clusterfuck but far, far less so than anything PHP-related.What really baffles me is the fact that it'll take up to a month to fix it. Even for a hobby/community site like AO3, that's extremely unusual. Even 4chan was down for less time than that after it got pwned, and its technical issues were quite deep.
>>156109113>I personally find that using existing IPs presents more of a hindrance and comes with more baggage. The point of fanfiction isn't to be easy-mode writing, despite it being an encyclopedia example of Sturgeon's Law in action.
>>156115058I used to write on a website that is basically held together with duct tape and prayer and it went down a few times while I was there, and a few more times after.
Damn bro, you got the whole room laughing
FF wonSB won
>>156115372Yeah sure. But even the garbage one-guy-in-his-mom's-basement sites I used back in the day were never down for that long unless they just didn't pay the hosting bill.
>>156113189What was it? I’m burdened by curiosity I must know
It's sad to think that one day probably within the next ten years the internet will get fried for real and we will lose uncountable quantities of information Library of Alexandria x100
>>156116471A chapter of an ongoing horror work I haven't updated in a while. I was trying to upload a new chapter every Halloween but I kinda fell behind on that because of other works taking up my time.
>>156116551It’s okay anon, if something like that ever happens you’ll have more important things to worry about; such as the imminent collapse of civilization itself.
Brands are now tweeting about it. It’s gone mainstream
>>156108030None of this 'outrage' would happen if retards actually crossposted their fics on other sites btw. You, solely, are responsible for this.
>>156108030This is the first fanfic thread I've seen in weeks. Are Jannie's deleting them on sight or are they only made on Fridays?
>>156108250Just think of it as having a month to finish your story.
>>156113223>book title is completely detached from the website domain nameThat is retarded, fix that.
>>156111329They did nothing and royally fucked up as it got worse.
AO3 and its consequences have been a disaster for human literature.
>>156117650Thread usually pop up near the end of the month.
>>156117728Thank you Batman that is actually really good advice. Gonna nerd out about my idea now Basically the New Avengers are doing one of their missions when Ava (Ghost) gets badly injured and John (U.S. Agent) almost loses it and has a repeat of The Incident but Yelena or someone snaps him out of itThey get Ava to the tower and John and Yelena have an argument about John almost killing a guy and John brings up how she never lets that go. And she brings up how they’ve all lost people and to let it go where he yells out that he held Lemar’s dead body. His best friend died to protect him and it was John’s fault. And that at least Yelena’s lucky that she didn’t see Natasha die in front of her. Not to mention she was manipulated into almost killing Clint Barton so neither of them are guiltlessYelena apologizes and John shrugs it off but does accept the apology. It’s awkward but they do reconcile and promise to take it easy on each otherIt’s very corny but I like interpersonal drama like that. Also Ghost is the one who almost gets her ticket punched as a call back to her chapter where John takes a bullet for her. I also establish them starting to develop feelings cause I ship them

Amazing how SB, QQ, SV, and FF all won.

>>156118296look for fan archive sites, or fanfiction swap communities. people do archive stories.
>>156118393ao3 was calling too much attention to itself. it was catering to Chinese yaoi writers, which angered the CCP. pro-pals didn’t like it because it was Zionist or something. and annoying 20 year olds were angry that it was hosting incest.
>>156118296https://fichub.netYou better hope it was downloaded in the past
>>156108030 The worst part is I just finished cleaning up what would be the next chapter in the main one I'm focusing on on the day I found out that the site A03 was down ,
>>156117457Unless, of course, the internet is fried on purpose by the powers that be in order to erase all past archives so they can bring back only the things that fit their narrative and be edited as necessary.
>>156118449There’s thousands of others like you hoping to post on the first day it’s back online, thousands more who will have more to post after a month’s absence. Rip to anyone wanting to get attention during that first week.
>>156118593Good point but I was finally getting on a bit of a schedule with tomorrow uploaded chapters and the AI I use as a secondary to help clean up my sentences and punctuation only doing so many post a day now because I don't want to spend real money on it. So maybe I'll wait a week or two after comes back online and start posting chapters on a 3 or 4 days basis to the main fanfiction or maybe I can do a better work on a side one or two.
>>156114238>>156114431just reads like something you'd see in the tag section on ehentai/nhentai

>Was reading a R63 Lorgar si fic were the mc was trying to spread Christianity throughout 40k before AO3 went downEverytime Christianity is involved in a fanfic, the whole story always ends up feeling like a giant shitpost 2 paragraphs in. Doesn't matter how sincere the author actually is, a fic involving Jesus will always feel like a massive shitpost.
>>156120077A Real Human Being is really good though. It's still funny how some people still fall for demon trickery and that one time Albert said being gay is a sin.
>>156119476Well obviously, but people deserve some shaming for using it, especially if they pass it off as their own work.
>>156116551A lot of people are currently hoarding and archiving data, including fanworks, for that reason.
>>156121061I'd do it myself if I wasn't a third worlder using a craptop with 100 GB of memoryI tried buying an external SSD and everything i put it in it just gets corrupted instantly
It's pretty funny I've seen AO3 alternatives I've never seen be posted because people outright refuse (and understandably so) to use Wattpad
>>156121222Good Wattpad is atrocious.
>>156119333I don’t know why anyone would use AI for that? One of my favorite parts is going through a chapter and fixing shit. I usually do it twice before I upload.

>>156121222Somebody made a comic-specific clone site using AO3 code, but it's pretty sparse. Comic Fanfiction Authors Archive.
>Finally finished writing chapter 1 of my Star Wars ficIt's not much, and it's taken some time, but it's a start.
>>156124070Every journey starts with a step. As long as you’re enjoying yourself that’s what’s important.
>>156124468Believe me, i am. Been working on it on and off for a long while, all the while thinking up a bunch more stories instead of just finishing "Chapter 1: Ki-Adi Mundi escapes Order 66," but it's finally at a point that i'm satsified with.
>>156125017I’d like to know more details. I’ve been writing some OC stuff with an Obi-Wan fic planned
>>156125157I'm gonna presume you mean either the fic or the first chapter of the fic. The fic itself is really just my own personal take on "Order 66 Happened Differently," with the oh so original "mix of EU and Disney canon," basically that thing Star Wars fans do where they make their own headcanon, mine is just the EU with most of the Disney characters thrown in because i'm generally fine with the characters. The chapter, and i'll try to keep it brief otherwise i'll be typing all night and day, has everyone's favorite conehead Jedi escape Order 66 thanks to sensing the deaths of other Jedi during the battle, all of which originate from an old comic called To the Vanishing Point. To make a long story short, he meditates, finds strength from a reminder of his lost family, contacts Jaro Tapal and discovers another Jedi in the Separatist camp: the last Jedi from the aforementioned comic that survived grievous wounds, with an implication that Palpatine was gonna make her an Inquisitor at the end. Bacara gets a couple scenes too, one inspired by how Zero Company handled Order 66, and another in a bar as he hears his chip-controlled self speak his line from Karen's Traviss' Order 66 novel.Again, a very brief summary of the fic and chapter, but i hope it answered your question.
>>156108030Luckily, I have already saved all the smut fics of my OTPs; I hope writers make use of this and give me more of my OTPs.
>>156125747It sure as hell did that sounds killer man
>>156125771All smut is shit and all gay smut is turbo-shit. Reading written porn is absolutely retarded.>b-but the female brain is more predisposed to reading about sex than watching itMore proof that women are fucking retarded.
>>156125858Glad to hear you like it! It really is interesting how things just come to you when you write. Bacara's portions were added to help extend the story since i felt it was a bit short otherwise, but the ending where he's horrified to learn he was forced to try and kill his own general, and by his own words no less... it's one of those things that you can just tell is gonna be good, you know?
>>156124468>Every journey starts with a stepAnd this is step one, SECURE THE KEYS!

Didn't know it was gonna be down for THIS long... damn. At least, I'll be able to finally read some of the stuff I have for more backlog in the meantime since I always get distracted by reading fics. Also, I'm DEFINTELY gonna download as many fics as possible whenever it does comeback. Everyone else should do that too.
>>156127976Writers should just crosspost their fics. You have dozen of sites for that, and tismos refuse to do that.
>>156128094Literally just store/organize locally and have an encrypted backup. Fic sites are for publishing, not storing.

I ripped off of popular yet niche fanfics to pass my creative writing class and nobody ever suspected a thing.
Im from ao3. Barely come here. >>156134914I really don't understand the sheer philosophical hatred of tags. I obviously understand a personal dislike, the disgust one feels at seeing certain tags or them being turned into weird metacommentary. But having too many stupid tags is so obviously a much more tolerable situation than no tags at all that it feels like people talking about how there's no need for a search bar or a catalog on 4chan. They genuinely sound out of touch and just not thinking about what they're saying.
>>156135871
>>156141470>bunch of stuff nobody saidNobody is saying "no tags".
>>156141470>But having too many stupid tags is so obviously a much more tolerable situation than no tagsabsolutely not it makes searching for something specific impossible since people just jampack their stories with as many as tags as possible to get more views whether or not those tags are actually in the story or not, especially when searching by character people constantly throw up 50 damn characters that never appear in the story
>>156141470>>156141668Sounds like the solution should be a compromise. Two different tag systems, one by the author, one by the readers.
>>156141572As far as I'm concerned "only tagging genre and ship" is no tags. That's not even table stakes nowadays for finding something.I agree that too many useless tags can clutter up a search, but that's just how it goes. I'd rather narrow down a bloated set of search results that at least nominally contains what I'm searching for than have to browse the entire fucking archive to find what I want because all we get are a rating and two characters.>>156141694The problem will always, always be that trying to maintain some "standard" of tags, even with two sets like this, will result in some sort of imposition somewhere. The only thing a reader set will do is introduce a second bloated list of tags. When there's not a problem, I actually think it'd probably work better, because tags are primarily for the reader and so it makes sense that readers would, when they're being civic minded, be better at picking out what other readers want to search for. But you can no more trust the readers to tag appropriately than you can the authors and you will get some set of brigands thinking they're cute and suddenly we're back to 50 character tags clouds. What some people want is a curated set of tags imposed by the site owner, but that's just gonna move the problem up the chain and now you have the authors, and some readers, warring on management. The point of a place like AO3 is to just be the archive. Any hint of politicization, in the general meaning of the term, inside the hosting of the works themselves will cause fractures. It's inevitable, really, on internet sites, but it will assuredly come sooner if they need to be making executive decisions on what tags can exist and who can use themFree for all is its own hell, but it has the least potential for drama and is the most manageable on the user end.
>>156141836Are you one of those spergs who can only think in extremes?
>>156133314Did Ao3 have a ranking page for the entire site? Could be interesting to see which fic was the most popular overall or updating the most.
>>156111329the refusal of smut was a big foot shooting move but the absence of real admins/mods has been the biggest blowit's to the point that no one ever really knows what they are doing, and it was like this when I started in '17. The bots and tech issues and their lack of response has been the death knell
>>156108778I remember earlier this year in these threads we had a good number of posts touting FF over Ao3even with Ao3's big issue now, the tech and bot issues have gotten so fucking bad at FF it really has just become indefensiblei'm not even gonna bother uploading there despite the down time at Ao3, it's not worth trying to fight such a dogshit site
>>156118593individual stories probably will be hurt by the rush but general interest will be skyrocketing after the comebacki'm looking forward to posting at least a story or two on comeback
>>156142801Hard disagree. It's an archiving website. There's no need for algorithms or rankings that'll cause unnecessary discourse. >most popularIt was probably a smutty original work.
>>156121222hmm, might need to add these to the infographic in case we ever have other downtimesI've heard of squidgeworld and there's >>156123123 , any others to be aware of?
>>156120948True.
>>156142940I'll concede, that is a fair point.
>>156127976Yeah, I had thought about dl'ing some stories but didn't get around to it, huge reminder to do so, esp since Ao3 has that neat ass feature where you can download works as MOBI or EPUB files for nicer looking reading on desktop or especially ereaderngl, when Ao3 is back up, I'm gonna do so for my own works so I can have all my stuff as EPUBs in case this happens again, I have an easy way of uploading my things again. Also the way it can take entire works and make it one epub with chapters and tables of contents is extremely nice and better for reuploading compared to my individual chapter documents I use when writing and ofc keep afterwards
>>156141694May as well just give AO3 a rating system at that point...>>156141836>clutter up a searchNta but that's not even the issue I have. Cross-taggers/attention whores are why I want a tag limit that force them to prioritize. On AO3 or elsewhere, zoomers or retards use tags for visibility when their purpose is to make things easier to block or function as trigger warnings.
>>156142801The search system already allows you to sort fics by their number or kudos and visits if numbers are all you care about.
there is only one thing worse than having AO3's content system and that is not having AO3's content system
>>156133314my ideal fic site would just be Ao3 with more features on top basically>saved filters (like you can filter out A/B/O shit once you wouldn't have to again)>better distinctions of what is and isn't a crossover (like the option to not consider a fic tag with fandoms that are just like the manga version and anime version of a thing as a cross over, option to filter only crossovers past a certain number of different fandoms)>native image hosting (this is unrealistic but we're dreaming here)>pm system (in a world where no issues would arise from this)>improved stats screen (day by day breakdown like FF had before it broke lol, more columns in the bar graph they have, different graph typesreally not much all things considered, ao3 is pretty good>>156137652the chapter release date would be great to haveI only just noticed it isn't a thing and it annoys me more than it should
>>156140941Please kill yourself instead of shitting up this board.
>>156142952IMO, royal road is one of the reasons why I realized I do actually prefer ao3's tagging system. It's very very hard to find anything actually specific on royal road and you just kind of have to scroll through a bunch of vague categories forever
Ao3's tags can be really annoying (esp. before the 100 tag limit was implemented and people were literally putting the works of Shakespeare into the tags), but it's batter to be overinformed than underinformedthat said, having a lot of tags IS a put off, and my eyes usually glaze over when i see someone hit that limit. I never put that many, no more than maybe uh 20 I think, beyond characters and relationship I'll tag basic stuff like violence and hurt/comfort or what have you. I also tag sexual position which I've noticed is kinda uncommon, which is annoying as it is a pretty important part of a good smutfic
>>156143141Agreed. I think a lot of anons that don't like Ao3 tagging haven't much experience with the alternatives and how much they suck.FF's was nightmarish for me. You have to fucking email them to have them add a character tag. I had exactly one addition after 6 months and never heard back on any of the rest. And on top of that you still only have 4 character tags and no general tagging system at all. Insanely dogshit system.
>>156143184I think it's very much so a difference in philosophy. FFnet tagging is good enough for people who have their specific fandom stomping grounds they go into and generally stay in there. But if you're more generally looking for a vague trope that anything can satisfy that includes a lot of original fiction. FFnet/ royal road tagging is hyper dogshit. Like I dunno if you want an orc girl or something and don't care about where that comes from you cant really search that on anything outside of ao3
>>156143104>saved filtersYou can already do that through what Ao3 calls a skin. It could be simplified.>native image hostingThe ideal timeline.
>>156143104>saved filters (like you can filter out A/B/O shit once you wouldn't have to again)Something like only wanting fics in your preferred language should be a filter at the account level. They don't even put English at the top of the languages list, so I have to scroll down to the E's every time.
>>156143104Ao3 enchantments lets you blacklist fics with certain tags, automatically filter out a fic if there are too many fandoms tagged (I have it set to around 5), and adds a publish date and other stats to each chapter, among other stuff. >>156143164Too many tags can just be fixed by automatically collapsing the tags if there are too much. I think there might be a script for that.>>156143207Skins, while I think have a lot potential, are incredibly unintuitive for the average user.
>>156143207Yeah, skins and there's a userscript that kinda does it. Really should be nativeThe image hosting thing is rough too when you realize how few options there really are. I never thought about it much but I've been considering getting some art done for an upcoming story of mine and it's made me notice that it's tricky doing this thing as it is now. Might just get a geocities page and host the image(s) there and link to their url's on the story page.
As a romancefag, ao3 tags are nice because it tells you ahead of time exactly what you're getting into and I'm not gonna get jumped by shit like the femc getting raped or stuff like that.
>>156140482The idea that some dead fics will actually get updates is a lot of the hope that is getting me through this so far.
>>156143224>SkinsI agree. But since all you need to do is know how to use Google Search to solve the problem in less than an hour, the average user is such a dumbass that my empathy is very limited here.
>>156143249It's kind of weird for me, I remember reading so much stuff in the past and kind of enjoying not knowing for sure who was going to get together. But now with AO3 basically everything is tagged right from the start, so the mystery is gone but it's still kind of comforting in its own way. You know exactly what you;re getting. But on the flip side I recently started a fic on ff.net just tagged as humor/friendship. I wasn't expecting romance but then my two favorite characters got together in it. It was like a really nice surprise.
>>156143732And I genuinely do in fact agree with you, anon. It's something I do experience consistently with real books. But at the same time I do feel like i'm passing over a bunch of stuff I would have otherwise really enjoyed because the story doesn't advertise itself as being the thing i'm into, you know?
>>156143242Yeah, the biggest problem is finding a hosting site (I use the free version of Flickr with a throwaway email address) and creating a skin so you can display your drawings directly in your fanfic. It’s a pain to set up when you don’t know anything about it, but it’s just two lines of code. One for your skin and one for your fic with the URL to your drawing. A03 is down right now, but I think their FAQ explains how to do it. If A03 has a Discord server, you might be able to ask for help there.
I guess some people here would rope themselves if they ever enter a library irl>Wtf where are my tags, I can only find shit by genre labels and librarian recommendations
>>156143832anon, this sort of “tagging” practice has infected real books too. I’ve seen at least three recently with “content warning” pages stinking up the front and spoiling the entire fucking plot just in case it might offend someone.
>>156143843If you go to the amazon pages for a lot of books these days there's a good chance of there being a full on "what to expect" where it serves the same purpose as ao3 tags but written in plain text
>>156143832I only actually like tagging for romance stuff specifically, as I'm extremely picky about that. If I see a cool scifi novel with a cool premise i'm just going to read it but if I pick up a random romance novel and it's not at all what I thought it's gonna be I'm gonna be pissed
>>156143832Genre labels and R-18 are basically tags, and a publisher/library would never allow the contents that A03 accept. I don't want a book to spoil me, but online, where anons can write the most insane shit with little to no consequences, tags are a necessity and serve to responsabilize both their author and the readers.
>>156144001clearly you haven't seen the shit that gets published as romance novels
>>156143832The blurb on the back of books is better than the summary most fics provide. Doesn't make up for the lack of tags but it's not like I don't know what I'm getting into.

>>156141476I'd much rather use FFN than ao3. If FFN were as active as it was a decade ago, I'd never touch ao3.
Unrelated but I was checking other stuffs the org behind AO3 and I feel like I stumbled upon written materials of average YouTube video essayist. I didn't know they were making fanfic-tier analysis out of real events. Real stinkers.

>>156145173>Fanon Bernie Sanders....huh?
So, was A03 hacked, by whom?
>>156145358Freedom of speech cuts both ways, or perhaps you'd prefer to live in the UK which recently made it illegal to have porn of women sitting on your face.
>>156148319I bet it's either the "they host porn of real children" group or the "theyre zionists" people
Any fellow former kink writers in here who have watched their loved ones slowly go insane or quit over the past decade?
>>156148319I dunno if "hacked" is the right word. They took the site down for "maintenance" on October 29, initially said it would be up in 12 hours. Then said 2 weeks. Then within 24 hours of the first post, announced that they had "uncovered a security incident with AO3" and were still trying to figure out the full scope of it. They didn't lose control of the site, so it wasn't ransomware or the admin being pwned, the site wasn't vandalized and the database wasn't nuked, so that just leaves data exfiltration as the most likely culprit for the "security incident", unless it was a bit of snooping around by some curious autist. They said the only thing really at risk that they've established is user information: emails, IP addresses, and hashed passwords, along with associated works and other profile info (but not real names which the site does not collect). Apparently their donor information is stored on a completely different site, unaffected by this. So it's weird. If it's pro hackers, I can only assume they wanted user data, but what they found wouldn't be very juicy as blackmail material. At best, low tier vandalism. They didn't sabotage the site, apparently, didn't directly disrupt operations. So maybe somebody was just snooping. Might be amateur work.
>>156148342>1982 is happening before our eyes.I hope they get better
>>156108141I'm procrastinating on a Thunderbolts fic too. May as well finish it now.
>>156148367I'm assuming by loved ones you mean other kink writers?Assuming so, uhhhhnot much I can think of, but then again I only really started interacting with other writers and the fanfic community in general this year, really only keeping myself occupied with the odd comment on one of my storiesI have seen some creators nuke their stuff or disappear. >>156150696oh, that's good to know, thank you
>>156148367Smut authors just have massive rollover, especially in more fetish tags. There are plenty of authors and works from the ASSTR and angelfire days that people here have never heard about and thats completely normal. I certainly know smut authors from the FF.net purges who never re-emerged, or who only showed up to ask people to take down reuploads of their own works that were taken down in a purge. The idea that just because you liked someone 10 years ago means they are obligated to stick around forever is really only a post-social media trend.
>>156150696>requires a log in to read anything not SFWTeenage me would’ve considered that a hard pass back in the day.

Very few are going to buy audiobooks of these fics.It would have been more profitable to scrape the most popular fics, swap out names, and self-publish those on Amazon. I was reading a Dracula one about Jonathan falling in love with one of the Brides cause it turned out they were lovers in a past life. Him and Mina were rewritten to be siblings so no cheating Another one I was re reading was a Percy Jackson fic. After a personal betrayal Percy moves to a, weird, Alaskan town that Zoe Nightshade appeared in after she died. They start a cute romance till Norse god shit happens and they, and some returning characters, get involved with another prophecy
>>156162296Someone had recently started a multi-chapter story where Elrond's wife gets ORC'D. I've scoured the net, and there's only about a dozen since the 90s. Which is disappointing, since it aligns with canon. So when a new one showed up last month, I was locked the fuck in. Now I'm left with nada.

>>156162296Starfall Academy. Picture the settings and stories of both Harry Potter and Stranger Things mashed together and starring the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog. It had just started the fifth and final act. Because there were five seasons of Stranger Things but seven books of Harry Potter, two acts are actually two books happening simultaneously as well, so those were three stories at once happening to like a hundred Sonic characters from at least six different continuities, plus a handful of OCs. It's all kind of nuts.

For people truly autistic and with no job or anything else to do? They could easily write truly massive amounts of words in a short period of time. The quality of the work might not be great, might need more proofreading or editing, but it's definitely possible to write full length novels and such in that amount of time.
>>156171442Oh don't get me wrong, anon. I'm very aware that this kind of output is possible, it's simply one of the markers that marks AI writing and arouses my suspicion. If I open the fic and don't see anything else that implies it's AI I just assume it's a false alarm.
Drop your ideas or WIP’s. The one I’m most excited to start is a small series of Spider-Man Noir fics each a team up with another hero from that run; Punisher, Iron Man, and my take on Doctor Strange. Based on my own AU of the noir universe where really the only thing that’s different is Peter and Felicia actually get togetherAnyways it all builds up to a crossover between them and Captain America for a proto Avengers mission in WW2. Even have some dialogue ideas for this one>Spider-Man, you alright?>Sorry Captain Rogers. Just missing home *shows him a locket of Felicia and May*>I understand. But I’m sure your Mother and Grandmother are proud you’re fighting for them.>…That’s my girlfriend and Aunt.>Ah. I see. She’s a bit old for you isn’t she?>Yeah… I’m gonna see if Stark needs help with his armor.>Alright gentleman no need to thank me but I got the blueprints for Red Skulls base.>That’s great Tony but you didn’t need to sleep with the informant.>It was for the cause Captain.
I've accepted that I'm probably never going to write it out, so I'll just spill it here. I wanted to create a Fate/Stay Night fic aiming to fix Heaven's Feel by making Shirou the main villain. Working backwards from Hollow Ataraxia, Shirou would have actually died from getting consumed by the grail mud and then saved by Kiritsugu using Avalon. This would lead into the natural creation of his reality marble, justify him still living, and serve as a possible explanation as to why he isn't fully corrupted by the time the story takes place. It'd begin with the fire, him living, and then growing up as a more Avenger-like Shirou. Show him being friends Shinji in middle school and having PTSD flashbacks of the actual Angra Mainyu's life. He'd actually hook up with Ayako and then distance himself from her after by quitting the archery club, leading into her being way more standoffish with Shirou and play into Shinji resenting him for that too. Shirou inherited the actual Angra Mainyu's concept and desire to do horrid things. So while he did feel something for Ayako, he wanted to way more fucked up shit to her and doesn't want to feel that temptation. By the time the grail war rolls around, he's putting up his best hero act but even people like Issei, who views him more as a repentant demon, are aware he's always on the edge of something. Taiga even thinks he might've forced himself on Sakura when walked in on her drying off in his clothes, but he does admit to both he thought about it.The 5th grail war starts. Shirou almost dies when he's killed. Things go more or less the Fate route. He walks Sakura home and meets Zouken, who triggers something by mentioning the Einzberns. He goes to Saber, who tells him about Kiritsugu and to ask Kirei, and he goes to Kirei to see Gilgamesh, who actually met him as a child and advised him to live more unrepentantly because he'd bottle up shit and explode one day, shaking his head for not following his advice.
>>156171559>small series of Spider-Man Noir ficsFics or fan-comics? I need to know if I have competition.
>>156108030Hope to see you guys when AO3 returns.
>>156171793fuck me, this is getting long, tell me if you're readingCaren is the one who comes out, having "retired' early from the Burial Agency. And if you know who she is, you know. Kirei has been trying to avoid her out of sheer discomfort, so Shirou gets to talk with her. For the first time in his life, Shirou speaks without any real restraint. It's more or less their same dynamic in the HA church scenes.Late night patrol with Rider snacking on Ayako happens. Saber BTFOs Rider. Shirou is a hare's breath away from beating Shinji an inch in his life when Shinji snaps on Shirou for going from his friend to a completely self-righteous, in his view, jackass who just distanced himself from everyone one day for no reason. Shirou snaps out of it, and he apologizes for it. This snaps Shinji out of the entire funk he was in for HF. He tries to think of something to fight about but can't bring himself to, accepting he lost and there's nothing to gain by still being mad at him. Shirou and Saber go home. But Shirou gets up again in a haze and goes to Sakura's room. The next day, he gets into that UBW fight with Rin. Except he actually wins that by projecting two savagely marked claw blades that mark things with curses he stabs into her. Surprised and not wanting to kill Rin, he acts on instinct, bringing his lips to her stomach wound as if to suck the curse out that works. He drains her mana like this and activates his magical circuits for real unintentionally since he was doing it wrong in the first place. Kaede form the track club walks up the stairs and darts back down thinking she walked in on them fucking. When Rin tells Archer Shirou is a magus with great curse magecraft and a demonic nature, he wonders what the fuck is going on. He starts walking around at night in drunk-like dazes, hands clenching with the urge to kill people. It takes a while but eventually he's attacked by swarms of insects covering his body. jesus, i'm going to be here a while
I went to check FF to see a fanfic i read a long time ago about a Superman and Marvel crossover about Luthor convincing the avengers that Sups was a bad guy, it was great! ... only to find this>((the remainder of this story will now only be available in the Marvelousman format. If you would like to see what happens in this story, please support the book "The Superior Adventure of Marvelousman". Found only on Amazon. Link on my profile page.))What the fuck
>>156171835Fan fic I enjoy drawing but I’m not that good. Not to mention I don’t know how to format a comic
>>156172055>the remainder of this story will now only be available in the Marvelousman formatI don't think i've ever seen someone refer to a different story as a "format"
>>156171930That's when a single curse comes to mind. Something only he and one other person intrinsically knows. "Angra Mainyu: All the World's Evils." The insects basically melt into sludge on his skin before being absorbed into his body. Zouken has to run for his life and gets sucked up into a black and red lined shadow. It takes the shape of Sakura, who reaches into her heart and crushes the last spec of the old man. She tries to approach Shirou but he wonders off, still in a daze. As the days pass by, Sakura pretends like everything is fine. Saber knows something is wrong and Rin stops by to chat all friendly, proposing they ally with each other, but Archer is well aware something is completely fucked. Shirou keeps going to the church and having conversations with Caren, who keeps exploring and poking holes in his worldview of being a self-made martyr while hating the people he saves in this timeline. The whole bit with Illya from the Fate route happens. Instead of being defeated in the woods due to an awkward sex power boost, Archer, Saber, and a surprise assist in Lancer beat Berserker back. Herc is about to break through and wreck one of them when the shadow shows up to consume him. The rest just barely manage to avoid getting eaten.Everyone knows things are going to get way worse before they figure out what's going on. One night, Lancer encounters someone on patrol: a familiar kid with a smirk on his face covered in red magical tattoos. He trounces the ever loving fuck out of him and stabs him through, but that's when not!Emiya grabs the spear, makes a claw, and starts ripping into him as wildly as he can. Lancer tries to get out but the shadow reaches out from under him to hold him in place. He's still alive when he's fully submerged but doesn't last long with his vital organs slashed up. Shirou wakes up in his bed after thinking he's really losing it. That he's going to do something horrible. He goes to church for another talk with Caren.
>>156172116My premise remains safe…
>>156172146He finally asks why she blushes and shifts when he's around, even moving away from him. She, seeing that he's really struggling and can't revel in his self-imposed suffering, confesses that it's because he's possessed. He laughs at such a ridiculous notion. Then she grabs something from behind the altar and throws it on him. It burns."What the hell is that?" His eyes widened as she turned the bottle to display the label, 'Holy Water.' "...Okay, so I'm possessed."She tries to exorcise him to no avail. For the first time, she sincerely apologizes. He waves it off, coming to a dark thought he had years ago when he first realized the impulses would never stop. But it's during this conversation where Caren is telling him he should be glad he's behaved like a good person does he finally lose it. He can't help himself. She is unfathomably beautiful to him. He forces himself on her like he did in the visual novel. Before the end of it, he holds her closer than he has anyone else in his life and begs her to just kill him. He can't live with it anymore. But she tells him she can't. It won't go away, only he will. He goes home and sleeps, at peace but fully knowing it's all going to go to shit. Avenger is fully awake while Shirou is asleep. He ambushes Gilgamesh and before goldy can go on a whole egoist rant, he tells him of what he thinks of himself. They're just long thrown away human concepts humanity no longer needs and has advanced away from, no matter how foundational either of them may be. Shadow backs him up and goldy is dead. Shirou wakes up and knows it's time. That awful thing he's about to do is near. He goes to Kiritsugu's grave. It's the same time Taiga usually visits it, but he's forgotten due to all the days bleeding together and his mind being on the fritz. Before he can seppuku himself, Taiga steps in telling him not do it. Then the part of him that's been holding back everything snaps.

>>156172317He could've died in peace if it weren't for her. As much as everyone else would be sad, it'd be over and he wouldn't have done anything wrong. It's Taiga of all fucking people, the pain in his ass since he was a child and the only company he ever had at home after Kiritsugu died. Out of sheer frustration, he stabs her, like he always thought of doing. And he realizes he just did something he can never take back.He holds her while she's dying and cries how he didn't mean it. She knows he didn't. He'd always been good in spite of how bad he got. But she can't find the strength to say that much before she goes. That's when he realizes it was impossible for someone like Shirou, whoever he was aspiring to be, to do that. As the clouds hung over and rain poured, his skin and hair darkened. "Oh... Right." The curse dug into every inch of his flesh eons ago emerged in arcane red. "I'm Angra Mainyu."Sakura emerges from the shadows to hug him, knowing it was hard for him but also feeling like shit for letting it happen in the first place. But it's done. The grail is nearly full through Sakura absorbing Gil and the others. All illusions of Avenger being Shirou Emiya have been destroyed. He would unite with his grail self and fulfill the ancient wish of humanity countless people placed on him all those thousands of years ago. >>156172670seems like a fanfic writer converted their fanfic into original expys so they could sell the last chapterspretty scummy
>>156173092ohhhThat happened to me with a Scarecrow fan fiction. The author took it down from FFN and uploaded it to Amazon as an original story with the characters and settings snipped. I bought the book from Amazon and it was okish, but it felt flat because there wasn't any of the inherent background from the Batman universe. Thankfully, I also had a copy of the original story.
>>156173164Yeesh, that is shittyI don't actually mind the idea of taking a fanfic you wrote or planned to write and converting it to an original thing as long as you>keep the original fanfic uploaded if you had already>make enough changes that the original version isn't literally just batman and his cast with different names>don't try and sell the last chapters of a story (this is shitty regardless of any kind of original conversion)I know some really don't like that kind of original ip change but i can respect it. Even beyond trying to make money of a plot, there are times too you realize that a fanfic is so much of a an AU that it works better as its own thing. I've took an idea I had for a oneshot and turned it into it's own original thing once for similar reasons.
>>156167025>You think people are crying because they can't read or because they can't upload? Can't speak for other people, but the only reason I'm grumpy about AO3 being down is because I can't upload the last of my October fics. I don't mind waiting a month to read stuff.

>>156173075Hmm, trying to look for it on FFA but I can’t seem to find it.
>>156173956FFA? hadn't thought about that in years lolseriously, by FA i meant FurAffinity
>>156174149Oooooh, my bad.Cool, I’ll look for it there because I really am interested in seeing it now. I like greys so I want to check this out.
>>156171793>>156171930>>156172146>>156172317>>156172454Cool, but kinda self-indulgent. This feels like the kind of fic that goes 60 chapters without being close to completion before the author "takes a break" and disappears. You should totally write it. I would be a fun ride.
>>156174294I appreciate it.Tho i do want to reiterate the indulgent thing, like I had the grey go from sort of almost no sexual dimorphism upon arrival to like curvy sexpot due to handwavey pheromone stuff and country cooking lol
>>156174443NTA but unique fetishposting is the stuff I live for in these kinds of fics, it's hot
>>156174443Indulgence is the spice of life, why do the things we enjoy if not to indulge?
>>156174354Self-indulgent how? My pacing isn't that bad. Or you're making a joke on how I stopped before the end.I guess I should finish my summary While Shirou's gone full Angra, Caren discovers what's inside daddy's basement. He wanted her to because he knew she'd try to stop Angra Mainyu from emerging from Shirou. She, tears in her eyes at such a horrible thing and the fact she enjoys the painful sight of them, puts the orphans out of her misery and tries to restrain her father, but he stops her and tells her exactly why he did it and what he feels. That she has the same love of other people's suffering as she does but gets no joy from pain or mundane things. He can only enjoy what is evil. And he has a question only Angra Mainyu can answer. Shivenger and Sakura go back to the Emiya residence where Saber is waiting and trick her into letting her guard down. She's enveloped by the shadow and forced to suffer the same curse both of them share. They embrace and kiss her each while sinking into the imaginary number darkness, easing her into her alter self. Yes, sex is implied and it's the same way he made Sakura go dark. I might have had a tidbit of Shirou being raped in his sleep by Rider before at some point.Caster, who knew something epically fucked up was going on, is the one to reach out to Rin for an alliance. Almost the servants are mana, and team Angra only needs one more kill. They barely have time to react before Salter, Avenger, and Sakura show up. Archer concentrates on Shirou to force the other two to protect him, but isn't until Caren shows up to shroud of magdalene him away does the tie break. Archer switches attention to Salter and Sakura has to contend with Medea, giving Rin's normies ass time to escape. Thus, Caren, barely holding her body together from Shirou's super demon presence, is alone with Avenger's true self."Tell me, out of all demons," he grinned beneath the red folds of her shroud, "have you ever been fucked that good?
>>156174443all fanfics are by nature self-indulgent, if you're gonna writefag you may as well embrace it
>>156174596"Six out of ten."He gave an honest laugh. "You sassy bitch!"She's actually sad. He's given up on himself, and the human half he'd cultivated for so long was broken beyond belief. She has no choice but to let him go when Sakura uses a command seal to make Rider obey her and take him back again.Team Avenger retreats to the Emiya residence, picks up Illya, and decides to camp it out at her abandoned castle because Avenger wants the ruined fortress aesthetic for when they'd fight again. Ilya, having been in Shirou's care and met him at the park several times, doesn't like what he's turned into."Don't look at me like that." Avenger sighed. "You tried to kill Shirou because of Kiritsugu. I got rid of him because he never existed in the first place: he was the silhouette of a broken man's childish dream."Tears streamed down her alabaster cheeks. "Did you really think of yourself like that?" She ran into him, burying her face in his stomach. "You're my big brother! The real Angra Mainyu died a long time ago! I know it! This is just someone else's stupid dream you're still following!"He looked down and frowned. "I know... But I can't stop now. I have to do this for everyone I left behind, and everyone who wished for me to be born." Sadly smiling, he ruffled her hair. "If Sakura didn't exist, I would've just used you instead. What kind of brother would do that to his little sister?"Team Caster and Rin attack. It's really a diversion so they can grab Ilya, who has a piece of knowledge that can put them on an even playing field. Rider is the one who grabs her while the three are occupied. Knowing either Caster, Rin, or both have figured out some magic bullshit with the normal grail. Team Avenger assaults the Ryudou temple. They're too late to stop Archer from making the jeweled kaleidoscope sword, but they get to kill Assassin, filling the grail to the brim. With Assassin dead, Rin occupied, and Archer going full committal to killing Shirou cont
>>156174784Salter is open to just annihilate Caster with Shirou holding off his normal future self with the whole skill leech thing they had going on in UBW. They rush to the cave instead of dealing with Rin and Archer, now with infinite mana like them. Rider is the one to get in their way. Sakura command seals her to stay put in haste, but that doesn't stop her from attacking.Salter is trying to bullseye Rider while Sakura and Rin face off. Meanwhile, Avenger and Archer are fighting equally into one of them busts out the reality marble. And it's Avenger's.I am the bone of my swordSteel is my body and fire is my bloodI have created over a thousand bladesUnaware of satisfactionNor aware of wantingWithstood pain to create weapons, not knowing their purposeI am my regrets. I can only persist. This is Unlimited Blade Works. It really does nothing but reveal Angra's inner world: a tainted wasteland of cursed blades with the black sun of the fuyuki fire hanging overhead. Shirou traces Excalibur Morgan and Archer goes with one he knows. The beam clash is just to blind Archer while he undoes his reality marble and makes a b-line to the grail, who's mutated eyes stare at him in growing recognitionThey're all too late to stop him. The facsimile of Angra Mainyu the person and Angra Mainyu the conceptual wish of humanity merge. Grail mud erupts and twists into an inhuman shape. In the true Angra Mainyu's madness, he grasps for the one beautiful thing he can remember, and it's the realization he had in his conversations with Caren that his dream was beautiful. The thing that would've been Angra Mainyu returns to its own idea of itself. An ancient curse is purified at last and shining.Everyone's fights stop. The servants, having been doused in the resulting grail mud, are living beings once more. Kirei emerges, having been hiding nearby all along and finally asks his question and receives his answer. https://youtu.be/eLOQp9IWgk4?t=592
>>156174901Kirei's false grail heart bursts. Caren goes to him, and Kirei confesses he loved her mother, and that she's grown into a beautiful person in spite of being from him. With a smile on his face, a monster dies human, finally.Shivenger Mainyu takes his corruption from Sakura but can't do the same to Saber, who is now incarnated in that timeline, Archer, who is now incarnated in the place of Shirou Emiya since there's technically a vacant seat, and Rider, who is unaffected because she was corrupt to begin with like Archer. No longer wholelly human and a walking endless pool of mana, he leaves. Sometimes he helps people. Sometimes he just lives in quiet moments. Until one day a certain German with an absolute bullshit name pops in to ask for help regarding a certain Spider he intrinsically is aware of and understands.Rin, Sakura, and the servants live an awkward life together. Bazette, after going through their timeline's Hollow Ataraxia, eventually moves in. Shinji has no fucking idea what is going on but knows better than to ask questions.Caren is at a school picking up a child. Her child. Who is the spitting image of his father. Not even close to 20 years of age, the other mothers ask her how she, a woman of the cloth, came to be one.Caren gave a smile only an angel could. "I was raped."The Ortensia boy, unfortunately or fortunately to all, was the perfect fusion of his parents.
As you can tell, that wasn't some half-thought idea but something I really thought about in depth. It'd just take a long while to put together as an actual story.
