Finn seems to lack depth compared to other characters because you can't just backstory him into having depth in the same way. The way they learned to give Ice King and Marceline and PB "depth" was to progressively hint at more and more stuff in their past thats compelling if for no other reason than for the novelty of it being in a "kids" show, and then over time they learn to actively use those established facts to make them act and think in a more interesting way within the actual stories, as actually realized characters. Finn isn old. They can do an arc about him being orphaned but thats not something that feeds well into who he is and how he thinks now.
