What's the last BD you've read? Was it any good?I feel like we don't talk about them enough, which I guess makes some sense since you usually need to be able to read French cuz they rarely get English versions, which is not that common, but hey maybe there are some other francophone anons lurking here and we can have a thread on some recent stuff.I've been getting back into it lately.Recently picked up Portraits de Persil (portraits of parsley) because I liked the look of the cover and didn't bother looking into it more. It was okay-ish, the art was simple but nice and charming, and it flows really well moment to moment but the story itself is a bit generic. Some slight spoilers ahead.Overall it felt very Ghibli derivative, it's about the cover girl, a painter named Lina, who gets kind of sick of expectations and obligations and doesn't want a typical life where she gets married and does menial societal work so she kind of retreats to the forest to get inspiration and stumbles onto a tree horse spirit called Persil and falls in love with it, at first he's very ambivalent and distant but he inspires her art because of how enchanting he is and she in turn teaches him to be more human as they learn more about each other and expand their worlds as she delves deeper into the world of forest spirits. But then it gets uprooted by your typical industrialist jealous chauvinist men threatening to destroy the forest, so there's a lot of back and forth conflict and drama. It's kind of like princess mononoke if the mc was the princess and the love interest was the forest spirit, overall I'd give it a solid 3/5.How about you all?Read anything new and interesting lately?
>>156165034picrel looks really creepy...
>>156165656I mean it's a little bit creepy I guess, it has some of that Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water side to it with her being into a monster. But it's really represented as such, he's pretty ambivalent towards her. I think it's probably one of the more interesting aspects, that they're not trying to portray the spirit of nature as this compassionate all good being who's gonna relate to her plight and struggles, instead it's mostly indifferent to it.
>>156165669"It's not really represented as such" is what I meant to say.
>>156165656pussy
As /a/ thinks Radiant is not a board related.Volume 20 just came out.
>>156165034I read pic related recently. It was pretty good, but was expecting it to be great. I'll try to write more about it in a while.
>>156167529>GuarnidoVery nice, I have some of his artbooks and they're gorgeous.
>>156167588Yeah, the art is glorious.
>>156165034It's been a while.
>>156167529The art was great, but at the same time, too cartoony for my blood. The style worked better for Blacksad, and even here you saw people who looked like animals. Still, I won't complain too much because it looks so good. Terrific colors and backgrounds, and amazing attention to detail. Now for the story and writing. I feel that it went a bit fast. I would love a "novel-length" comic (something about 500 pages long) about this world, but I read somewhere that it is already longer than it was supposed to be. Some details I don't think we're covered (such as, didn't Felipe have a sister?), but I'm not brushed up on my history enough to know if it was alright or not. As with the art, the characters and story were a tad too Disneyfied for my taste, but it seems that was the intention. Like a Disney version of The Sting set in the West Indies during the 17th century. The protagonist was alright, but I feel that he lacked charisma, or the magnetism his type tend to have. The translated version Ayroles' writing read well. I'll be looking for more of his work in the future, especially De cape et de crocs. I also want to read the novel this comic is based on, El Buscon. This comic, as I said, was pretty good, easy recommendation, but I did expect a little more.Overall rating: 7.5/10
>>156167529The art really is outstanding. Storywise it was a fun ride though I suspect enjoyment may be influenced by how open the reader is to a conman protagonist. As a side note I just found out this was successfully crowdfunded for an English language print edition. The kickstarter ended so you can't order it until next year once they open up stock to everyone but it's nice to have confirmation that it's in the works. The English title is "A Scoundrel in the New World" in case "The Swindling Indies" doesn't turn up good results.
>>156165034Idk
>>156170824What's that one about?
>>156169904The Treacherous Indies was a pretty good title too.
>>156169826did you read El Buscón? because I think Indies captures the essence of that book perfectly.
>>156171767I was going to, but I'm already reading three prose books concurrently.I would likely have clashed with the comic more because the art wouldn't match what I envisioned. I have read Lazarillo de Tormes, but I'm assuming that's quite different.

>>156165034Hold on
>>156165034Sorry OP, people don't read anymore.
>>156166536I prefer manga. Fuck that shit.
>>156166184Brave bastard.
>>156169904>>156169826Very cool, I've been kind of on a pirate kick lately. So I'll definitely put it in my sights for the future even if just to get another Guarnido book because I really enjoy his style.
>>156175501There's also Portrait of a Drunk. Not as pretty, but it's got boats.
