Does the Midnight universe have a shot at genuinely competing against DC's Absolute line, or is it merely a desperation move with no real legs and doomed to fizzle out/get cancelled? There is admittedly new management/editorial in place, but is that enough? Also is it possible that Marvel learned all the wrong lessons from Absolute?
>>156169961Any good Makima!Cat + Shota!Peter works?
>>156170014>Peter has a spider on his chest similar to Denji's Pochita heart>Makima vibes from Felicia>Marvel is desperate to get manga salesIt really is Chainsaw Man, isn't it? Also yes I'm coping the writer will stop being retarded and announce a part 3 after that DOGSHIT ending that was rushed. But back on topic: I think Felicia is in way over her head. We see covers and panels of her sweating/freaking out over her OSCORP superiors wanting results
>>156169961After reading the first issues of the three launch titles, I doubt Midnight is even going to be as successful as the 2024 Ultimate line.
>>156170198>I doubt Teen Peter # Who's Counting Anymore is even going to be as successful as Husband & Father Peter Not shit.
>>156169961Midnight has a lot of problems working against it:a) Hickman being the lead writer post-Imperialb) it's overseen by Jordan White, the same editor on Hickman's Krakoa that famously resulted in Hickman leaving and also had Ewing phoning in a lackluster run on Venom after Brevoort took his jobc) also explicitly created by Hickman and Buckley (b4 he left) as Marvel's Absd) also it has lackluster writers especially Percy of all people. It'll probably sell, but not be Mavel's Abs killer. And Marvel will probably put Hickman on something else once it peters out and Hickman gets bored being on one book for 30 plus issues. Looking at the recent entries, he hasn't be on a book longer than 24 issues (which was USM).
>>156170272Hickman getting bored before issue 24 is fine because it will be canceled before then anyway.
>>156170198They said they're shooting for 50 issues but I'll be shocked if it reaches half that
>>156170406I think Jordan will keep at it out of sheer stubbornness since this is his biggest assignment since they booted him after Krakoa.
>>156170070>People who've only read CSM : "Mmmh, this is giving me CSM vibes"
>>156170524It's a surface level comparison but still valid considering the market Marvel is shooting for
>>156170070>It really is Chainsaw Man, isn't it?Maybe?I feel it's more Kamen Rider. Of the earliest Showa Era shows like the 1st one.Oscorp literally created their own nightmare in the form of a scary Spider-Man.And what's worse? It's a Spider-Man who has nothing at all to lose.People who have nothing to lose are the most dangerous ones. And a Spider-Man who has nothing to lose is far more dangerous.
>>156170475This is such a weird thing to push as a line, do they seriously think it can last for 4 years? Why?
>>156171441Pretty graphic way to kill Ben. What will drive this Peter to become Spider-Man considering he's not directly responsible for Ben's death? Also does anyone care about Midnight X-Men? Kinda just skipped it because the premise seemed eh. I get what they're going for with F4 but I don't know how that's going to hold an ongoing if they're shooting for 50 issues
>>156171469Because Marvel is butthurt about the jokes people make about books barely hitting 12 issues and Ultimates getting axed
>>156171482>What will drive this Peter to become Spider-Man considering he's not directly responsible for Ben's death? He will definitively do a 1+1=2 and come to the conclusion that this spider monster that merged with him is an Oscorp creation. He will feel guilty over his uncle's death because he indirectly brought it with him from Oscorp. So the best way for him to get his vengeance would be by putting this power to good use and with the responsibility that comes with it.But for now let us see how the next issue will go.
>>156171195I feel like its more of a fusion of Cronenberg's the Fly and Kamen Rider.
>>156171496THEY cancelled the line even as it was selling well though, it’s the most known thing about the wet fart of a line
DC is milking Earth 2 by showing a pregnant Catwoman in front of Batman. Good fucking luck competing with that.
>>156171700>when even in the grimdark universe, Batman gets to be more of a family man than Spider-ManIt's becoming increasingly funny to me, complete with WFA being the big Webtoon hit Marvel is still lacking.
>>156171482Midnight X-Men has the weakest concept but the strongest world building, to the point they might have overcomplicated things out of the gate.
>>156171821So what's the deal about the vampires? Care to explain?
>>156171914From what I've seen it's just the generic human/mutant race war shit but with human vampires vs mutant vampires though said undead race war has seemed to unite the non-vampires
>>156172251So.....Mutants all jumped onto the vampire train because to undead immortals either way humans are shit, but now we're dick measuring between coke and pepsi? Okay. Makes you wonder what mutant powers would be complete shit with Vampirism compounded onto it
>>156172426I'm mostly speculating but from the little bit of lore bits it seems to be>Some mutants have gotten vamparized starting with Storm>Vampire mutants retain their powers and have only the sun weakness, and a weakness to Adamantium>Immediately go full vampire nazi, try and break the Masquerade and rule the earth>Human vamps hate the uppity newcomers for obvious reasons, mutant vamps hate the ogs for obvious reasons>Magneto is the leader of the human mutants, seems pretty chill for a Magneto because of course he chills out when there are worse racists around>Cyclops is the only X-men around so far, absolute badass even for a Cyclops>Catholic Church is trying to go "Deus Vault" on the vampires and contact Nightcrawler who is the Bishop of Manhattan and seemingly a vampire hunter himself to let him know they're gonna be operating in his territory hunting mutie vamps>Kurt is still in contact with Vampire Queen Storm trying to convince her to remember herself but she's a goddamn vampire theres nothing left of the original Storm
>>156172611Templar Van Helsing Nightcrawler is definitely the draw for me here.
>>156172678If Hickman delivers that (lol lmao even) then I'll take back half the awful things I've said about him
>>156172611Why would adamantium work on vamps?
>>156169961>or is it merely a desperation move with no real legs and doomed to fizzle out/get cancelled? This 100%.Don't get me wrong, I think the concept has some potential and I don't want to dismiss it from the get-go, but anyone with half a neuron can tell this is their panicked response to Absolute, and doubly desperate after they screwed the pooch with Ultimate. That by itself is not the problem, no, the problem is that this means Marvel higher ups are keeping a close eye to its development, and THAT is the real poison.Look at it this way. How many times have you seen a public company stumble into a success pretty much by accident, only to immediately fuck it up the moment they start giving it proper attention in response? Whenever they trust/hope something to succeed, they begin to shape its direction by committee and test groups, invariably turning potential gold into slop. They'll give Absolute a superficial look, take the wrong lessons from it and apply a distorted version into their product, then kill it when it fails to magically dethrone the thing it blatantly copied.
>>156172693I just would want one time the Church doesn't get REVEALED to be the bigger bad.Give me the Exorcist, not a typical JRPG where we are fighting God again.Vampire Hunting Nightcrawler played straight without any of the usual crap cliches, please Hickman.
>>156172751This, I fear a blurb read of Absolute and only taking GRIMDARK GORE is just going to take us to charmless 90's slop very fast.Halloween is over, if this is going to last they are going to need to put the work in beyond discount Kamen Rider, Event Horizon at home and the average X-Men plot.
>>156172751One misstep I've seen with Midnight is the slow burn origin/storytelling. With Absolute every title showed you what each character was capable of, and the tone you were in for. We still got Batman busting heads issue one, Wondy was fighting a giant monster, and Martian Manhunter was a trip. They knew how to establish a presence and then with the reader hooked circle back to important context. Midnight doesn't do that
>>156172801See what I find crazy is that Marvel is having each Midnight book compete against one another by releasing all 3 in the same week with no other Marvel titles allowed. It's like dumping an entire show all at once on Netflix, it's making it harder for the content to remain in the public consciousness. Absolute DC has like 2 books a week max, and spaces them out accordingly. And its also really shitty because its demanding would be readers 15 bucks a week
>>156172812We needed a cold open for a line like this, show us where you are going right at a sweet spot to hook. Like Midnight Peter fighting abominations as one himself on a rooftop, F4 dealing with Cthulu antics and Nightcrawler leading a killteam.
>>156172812I personally enjoy slowburn stuff, but I'm also absolutely aware that shit doesn't float in the comic industry, specially nowadays. You gotta sell your pitch as fast as humanly possible or you'll get dismissed as a failure before issue 10 and politely told to wrap the story up before issue 13, thank you very much. It's not quite the same, but still very close, to the reason all those japanese novels have those horrendous fucking titles that are closer to a summary of the entire plot. It's probably closer to how the big Shonen Jump quickly culls their new stories if they fail to gain traction immediately.
>>156170198That's sad, but true.
>>156170070Wasn't one of the #1000 covers a CSM tribute>>156171441You're really trying to force a connection there my dude. There's nothing really tying things to KR other than the whole cross of fire thing, and even in that regard you can find way more comparison to Spider-Man 2099 or Ultimate Spider-Man
With all the talk of this not lasting long, I'm surprised that World's Finest is going as long as it is. 57 issues and no sign of it ending. I'm happy for Waid.
>>156172611Conceptually, this doesn't seem interesting for a longer series.
>>156172902Even Absolute Green Lantern and Absolute Flash had criticisms about their slow burn build up. The thing here is I dont know if Marvel is in a good position to try that storytelling given how all of their lines are burning
>>156173037That's because World Finest rocks and is set in a little window of time where people are in early to mid career and not held down by current timeline events
>>156173082I feel like Absolute Green Lantern never found its feet like the Flash. Ewing just isn't the guy.>>156173091I'm only catching up now. I'm happy that Mora hitched himself to Waid, rather than someone like King. What do you think of his JL so far?
>>156173105Establishing the spectrum got interesting, I'm just confused by all the Manhunter stuff recently. Also JLU is just serviceable, but I'll take a fine book over a bad one. I appreciate the JLU concept because I was so tired of the organization just being 6 people before
>>156170014Is he a shota if he just turned 18?
>>156173169I think he just turned 18 so he can legally sign the OSCORP contract
>>156173105GL has been interesting for the past few issues, Ewing is attempting way too much in general though and the pacing is awful, it took 15 issues just to properly see what the Green Lantern powerset even is lol
>>156169961I've seen nothing but praise for Midnight Spiderman's art but I really dislike it, it reminds me of those silly "How to draw in anime style" books you'd see in bookshops.
>Everyone hated F4 because it was slow>Everyone hated X-Men because it was just the same mutant shit, but now they're playing VtM>Everyone yawned at Spidey because its an animu version of Absolute BatmanMidnight Spider-Man will limp on to maybe 10 issues, but the other two are going to be dead and forgotten by Issue 5.
>>156169961I think the problem is>they released all three issues in early October>all three launch issues have interesting ideas but feel kind of incomplete>Marvel already made the readership distrust them with how comics get canceled after 5-10 issues and that they ended the Ultimate line despite its popularityI feel like that's why at the moment it's not exactly on fire the way the 2020s Ultimate launch or the Absolute launch were. I don't think it's as disastrous as Liefeld says it is but I don't see the same energy as there was for 2020s Ultimate or Absolute launches so far. IIRC in Perch's interview with PKJ, PKJ said the initial plan was doing 40-page launch issues for Midnight. I think they probably should've done that.
If they weren't fucking cowards, they would have released these as TPBs with ~5 issues worth of content to flesh out the concept and, if people bit, do a maxi-series with the promise of an ongoing if sales hold up.
