The character, his comics, cartoons, anything Spawn related really.
>>
Guess there aren't a lot of Spawn fans on /co/ :(
>>

I like Spawn. He's cool, I'm mad that Angela got absorbed into Marvel and then ruined.
>>
>>156177290
The random onpanel gangrape of a dying woman in one of the spinoff runs was so ugly and dark I had to drop it.

The only cool thing about him was the giant living dracula cape
>>
>>156177290
I read all the way to Spawn meeting God and Satan, and after that arc I kinda just ended up losing interest.
Maybe I'll get around to finishing the original run someday, is it worth it?
>>
>>156177290
It looked good and had interesting ideas but the writing was bad.
>>

>the writing was bad
Todd McFarlane might be the only person capable of turning the premise of a murdered special forces commando resurrected as a crime fighting demonic hellspawn with magic powers boring.
>>
>>156178550
I think the animated series did a really good job of taking the original premise and refining it into a really good narrative. Too bad it only lasted a single season.
>>
>>156177290
Gaiman and McFarlane getting into a lawsuit and forcing the legal system to argue over Spawn lore was funny
>>
>>156178592
It felt like he was changing his mind all the time on which idea to pursue and so he switched focus before any of his ideas could pay off. But then you look at the toys and the statues and there were so many good, untapped ideas. Todd needed writers and handlers.

Never really cared for the comics beyond Rat City & The Dark Ages

Cartoon was decent from what I've seen
>>
In a better timeline, Todd woud have hired a professional writer while he stayed as an artists/editor.
The guy had talent for visual design, it could hav been interesting seeing him developing his style and, someday, grasping the basics...

When I was a little kid I remember going in to a convince store and there where four comics for sale in the magazine section.

Simpsons comics
New X-Men
Superman
Spawn

I wanted to buy Spawn but my mom said no and I got Superman instead. So in my imagination Spawn has always been this taboo, subversive cool character that my parents really would be disappointed if they caught me reading. Now as I've grown up I realize it's not that brilliant but the vibes are still there for me.

Curse of Spawn #5
>>
The only villains anybody can name are Violator, Overtkill, Malebolgia, and maybe Redeemer because everything Spawn fights looks like them again or a vampire with tribal tats and a gas station knife.

I think Ken Steacy is underrated
>>
>>156178997
That’s more than the vast majority of characters that aren’t Batman, Spider-man, or Superman.,
>>
>>156178063
The series started with a serial killer that targeted children.

I think he ended up becoming the clown or his spirit went to the clown or some shit. It's been a while.
>>
>>156178548
I read until ~300 when I reached the present day a few years ago.

There are a lot of plot threads that get unresolved over time, McFarlane is not a master-level writer.

However, he does excel at putting cool shit on the page. If you go into it with that understanding, Spawn is a long series of fun reading.
>>
Spawn sucks.
>>
>>156178997
I know tony twist as well
>>
>>156178997
How many Iron Man villains do you think Joe average could name?
>>
I love Spawn. Because he is a good person, and he helps people. And he is a good person.

>cartoon is better than the source material primarily because it refines the good ideas from the comics
Many such cases
>>
>>156183683
Animation just stays winning, really feels like comics should have a set beginning and ending to them instead of just keeping it loose and open
>>
>>156178781
That's pretty much how it went with my parents too, they thought it was way too grotesque looking, eventually I managed to read it anyway and if nothing else it gave me some basic ideas about Dante's Divina Comedia.
>>
>>156177290
if todd had working brain synapses, he'd stick to designing shit and letting others write it instead of regularing coming back to implode whatever other writers he cede the chair to come up with.
>>
>>156178063
>>156178868
I remember reading this in a comic store as a kid. That was a long time ago so it really stayed with me.
>>
>>156178611
It's usually easier to pickup the pieces and build something more proper after you leave the pieces that didn't serve a purpose.

I loved the first 37 issues of Spawn; after that, the story went downhill, with a few entertaining issues here and there. For me, the comic ended at the Armageddon. From there on, it gets really bad, and I'm not a fan of that semi-realistic, super-edgy and grim art style for Spawn. At least I'm glad to own a copy of issue one.
>>
>>156177290
The only good thing to come from this was the HBO cartoon

The comic is all right but the animated series is fantastic. Along with The Maxx, the Spawn animated series is the best Image adaptation.
>>
>>156184450
not his name
>>
>>156185263
My thoughts exactly. It was clear that Armageddon was the planned ending for the series so everything that comes afterwards feels like pointless filler
>>
>>156185263
>semi-realistic
Ew, no thank you. I like my cape comix with a bit of PIZZAZZ
>>
>>156186341
you need to buy a separate book if you want the covers bud
>>
>>156177290
I liked him in soul calibur 2.
>>

Such as?
