If all the water is in rivers inside these trenches, that makes them the only easily habitable area. And being the hotspots of depth on the planet, these trenches will have much higher air pressure. So you get the benefits of more air without the downsides of more gravity. I don't know how well a race of trench-dwelling giants with thrive enough achieve spaceflight, but if the planet's gravity is low enough, it would make eventual space exploration far easier.It takes a *lot* of depth, however, for air pressure to get high, so these would need to be *very* deep trenches. Alternatively, air pockets in underwater caves have a lot of pressure due to the water pushing on it. As a bonus, when below the surface of a planet, the amount of gravity you feel is that of a planet whose radius is the distance from you to the core - you ignore all the stuff above you.
