It's really all a question of degrees.
You can insert a smaller sound for a less intense feeling.
And one thing that's super important here is quality. The smoother the sound, the better the experience.
Any irregularity in the surface becomes immediately grating. Which is why steel sounds are still a thing. Unlike silicone, you can polish them. The problem obviously being the lack of flexibility.
