Always dreamed this kind of set up 7 years ago but was too poor to afford it. Even though I already have O4 pro quads, I’ve always wanted to try build and try analog.

The box came with extra AIO ESC’s, cameras, motors etc…

I got a fuck ton of batteries that are 5+ years old and idk if they’ll charge well but the ones I’ve tested had a steady ~3.7v.

That kind of solves the miniaturization issue but not the rest. Even with magic nuclear batteries I can't see a commercial version of the idea doing well so long as propellers are being used for lift without some giga autist giving us way quieter blades. Even that would leave the "why" question open since a set of wireless earbuds connected to your phone gets you all of the voice command stuff unobtrusively and your fancy selfie camera can just deploy when you need it (maybe at a voice command, even). Until AI or drones are more capable, those abilities seem better separated.

Actually now that I think of it, if you just incorporate an AI search engine into the DJI fly app you don’t even need the Amazon Alexa (you have to connect the DJI Neo to your phone when flying line of sight, to fly fpv you just connect to a controller and headset the N3 or the goggles 3, those things are expensive though I bought the goggles 3 for $550 and the N3 were like $275 and regret both, if you want a DJI drone just fly from your phone or RC3)

If you're just bashing you should be fine until the already approved radio equipment loses support/popularity, but I expect them or another agency to try something a step further within a few years. Lawyers will always try to torture language and logic until text means what they want it to, but as written, the aerial SPECIFIC requirement should mean that any (common) basher part you want shouldn't be a concern because your car doesn't fly. Commonality would mean legality even if an RC plane uses the same parts. Shared parts are (should be) safe, but I don't expect this to be the last restriction and with the right lawyer and wrong judge anything can happen.

I need a motor to operate up above 75C, preferably up to 90C. What’s the chance a random cheap little alibay BLDC will handle this continually? What about a cheap brushed DC motor? If I understand, it’s the curie point of the magnets that are often the limiting factor, that and the lubrication in the bearings, brushed motors are more likely not to use ball bearings so I guess they’d be worse, but I think they also don’t use rare earth magnets so maybe they’d be better? Also I don’t plan on having a ratchet mechanism or whatever, so being backdrivable is a must, no gear-motors. Steppers are an option, but high-temp steppers get expensive from what I’ve seen.

You can play using a game controller but you won't get the best experience because the Y-axis autocentering on the left stick will mess with your throttle control. I also don't like them as much for fine control. If you're really just dipping your toes in to see if you like the idea at all it is doable though. I found it helpful to set things up so the quad just about hovered at center throttle. The Boxer is a great controller, but you can save a few bucks going for a Pocket or Zorro instead.

I am very confused by the terminology used. Drone to my understanding is an Unmanned Vehicle. UAV to my understanding is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. A quad copter is a machine that has 4 vertical thrust. RC is a remote control device.

20 years ago I was playing with small DIY autonomous vehicles, 2nd hand RC cars. I attached a BASIC Stamp to an ESC. I was inspired by the DARPA grand challenge autonomous driving stuff that happened in 2004-7. Basically I was poor and wanted to explore this in my own way. Today they make toys today that basically do what I was doing. I'm looking into it because my eldest is 7, we already play with Legos Scratch platform and he just started python for kids.

Thanks for saying "autonomous" because the Internet is clogged with stuff about drones that has nothing to do with autonomous vehicles and I couldn't find anything useful. I was frozen trying to find what's out there.

So far I found ROV2 FOR RPI which also uses Python. Which sounds perfect for father son project, next year.

I have analog ev800d goggles I removed the lens part and mounted on a tripod

Then bought goggles 3 and n3 , goggles 3 are wayyyyy more comfortable

I got myself a radiomaster pocket and a couple sims (for fun & realistic) but good lord those controls are absolutely inhuman.
Maybe it's easier when you have goggles on but all the flipping and changes depending on your angle keep my head spinning.
Like, I'll move the stick to do something I need the drone to do which worked last time but since this time I'm leaning slightly it moves completely differently and...
It's just so confusing.

Practice. Sorry, but that's what the Sims are for and goggles don't change that aspect much. Beats walking out to flip your copter or breaking parts though, right? It sounds like you might need to Ender's Game your piloting; the top of the drone is up. Always. I wonder if turning on the horizon markers might help you as well.

Lower angle=more aggressive flight. I think around 30 is common for racers, but I like mine more like 20. If you aren't blasting around and favor more of a cruising style you'll also want a more neutral angle. Starting out, you may want to choose a more neutral angle and then change it as you adapt. Playing with your rates (making the craft less sensitive all around) and expo (making the drone more or less sensitive at the extremes of stick movement) can also help.

fly more and more and don't stop

angle mode just means the drone doesn't return to level when you're done pushing the stick

you know in horizon you can thorrlte up, then inch forward then the drone goes back to level

in angle mode if you inch forward it will keep going forward forever until you tilt it back a little

horizon mode is good for indoor flying

Is there a way to actually amplify a drone’s RF?
I have an autel Evo v2 III thermal drone that I use for hunting/scouting game but I don’t get anywhere near the advertised 8 miles or so before I start to lose signal.

To be clear I don’t want a directional antenna like the 4hawks or alien gear or whatever but to actually amplify the Omni directional antenna.

I’m not opposed to building my own setup, but I’m pretty new to drones and don’t really understand radio frequencies so I wouldn’t even know where to start.

By receiver module do you mean for your radio? If so then you can use the DJI controller 2 I think which will use the same connection link as your goggles to the air unit. Otherwise what most people do is they have an ExpressLRS radio and connect that to the elrs receiver on their drone. Analog here usually refers to the analog video system, which you're not using if you have DJI

You can do 2 things with your DJI V2 goggles : fly any DJI drone that is supported with the goggles as long as you also pick up a DJI controller, motion controller or cellphone controller.

DJI does not sell a module to pop into a radio master receiver unfortunately

I've got the goggles v2 and they're great - they'll work with air units up to the o3.
For a while I used the BDI Digidapter which let me use my crossfire module for analog in it. I've since switched to HDZero for racing and high speed stuff, but still use DJI when I need to do cine stuff.

Do you guys think using a drone camera system and transmitter would be viable for a racecar? The tracks are usually less than 6km in length. A lot of elevation changes, but if the receiver antenna was mounted on a tall enough pole it should work right?
The other options seem to be cell tower and starlink, but they are either heavy and/or expensive.
What would you use if you were trying to design a camera system for a race car?
