>$5,000 for a 100 foot long, 5 foot high chainlink fence
>I could do it myself for less than $2000
These contractors need price regulation
>>
diy then. Everyone has to eat.

Pa won't let me, it's his fence

>materials markup
>transport
>work hours
that's just how businesses work, most people don't have the tools, the skills, the knowhow and/or the time, so they have to pay the difference. DIY is always cheaper unless expensive specialised machinery is necessary or the materials are hard/impossible to source for the layman
>>
>>2991075

maybe you shouldnt have taken out his fence, then
>>
>>2991072

Sounds cheap. usually you can figure labor cost being at least 2x materials cost. If you don't like it then do it yourself and you'll figure out why they charge the labor cost they do.
>>
>>2991185
> 80% labor costs
Even high school drop outs want the white picket fence and company car life yo.
>>
Completely reasonable price if it's quality, especially if you have difficult soil in your area. It's not 2010 anymore anon . A big Mac meal combo is $15 now

So? Write up a contract that guarantees repairs from structural damage from weather, soil shifting, wildlife, etc for ten years. Personally, I would just drive some of those green and white posts in the earth, slip the nicer looking round metal posts over them and bury them in the ground a bit and run the fence myself. It will look the same, can be knocked out in a couple of hours, and will last. The only bitch is keeping the posts exactly straight with uniform height.

We went to a drive in movie a couple summers ago. After the movie was over it was getting late, my kiddo and wife were a bit hangry, figured we'd see if anything close by was open. Only thing reasonably close was a McDonalds. It was like $50 for three meals, it was absolute dog-shit quality and they couldn't even get the order right... Never again.

It had probably been a good 15-20 years of no McDonalds before that night, and I hope to god I never have to eat that slop again for the rest of my life.

Good job cursing yourself idiot.

I thought about this and I came to the conclusion that it's not the worker that's overcharging. It's the middle class that is poor. We're all the same class now paying each other to do shit
>>
i would fill the stanchions; great stuff, concrete, sand, w/e.

the stanchions at the bottom of the hill where i live are solid, i assume the municipality knows what they are doing.

They have price regulation. It's regulated simply by you not using them if they're too expensive. If the price really was ridiculous, they would not be able to charge the rates they are and stay in business because they'd have no customers.

Carpenter's Union tried to convince me to become a fencing contractor.

I was supposed to hire one Mexican who was bi-lingual and have him run my crew of Wetbacks.

They were of course trying to push this on others. Scuttlebutt was putting up a fence around a construction site would be like a contract to KEEP IT FENCED and you'd always be in hassles after it gets fucked up and legal issues, etc, that is why no one wanted the gig.
>>
>>2991075
the fuck you caring about the price then?
>>

The end of my brick driveway is like 3 inches below the sidewalk. I talked to two contractors and gave up. They refuse to possibly consider just doing the part I want for like $1000. They only want to sell me a whole driveway. Fuck off.

One lf them tried to tell me my driveway wasn't sloped right it could never possibly work because of the drainage. Which was a hell of a pitch because there's a noticeable pitch through the whole driveway
>>

>I could do it myself for less
of course you can. my mom wanted a chain link fence in here front yard. we had one in the back yard, I was around 17 or 18 at the time. went and looked at the one in the back yard. made list of parts I would need and we went to some place to get the parts. I did the whole thing in a couple of days. I just figured it out. I don't remember the cost but since this was pre-internet so that would not matter. It was easy.

>The end of my brick driveway is like 3 inches below the sidewalk
so a major fill and grade job thats guaranteed to settle shortly after and make a seamless interface with the existing bricks impossible
that job is giant assache and will be billed accordingly

Don't ever threaten a tradie with an actual days work. They either over-quote the time it takes so they can work half as hard or they do a slapdash and fast job so they can get back to drinking beers and doing rails as soon as possible.

Funny story. I hired a guy to rebuild a small deck. The work would be done while I was on vacation. I had him fully itemize the quote, with the hours of labor needed detailed. He said it would take him a day (about 8 hours). Well, the dude showed up at about 2 PM for his 8 AM start time, worked for a bit less than 4 hours, finished the deck, and went home. He charged me the full 8. After some back and forth and a small claims suit the security camera footage I had of him only working 4 hours meant I saved a bunch of money on labor.

The other scam I've had to deal with is fuckers screwing you on materials. Always get a fully itemized quote. If they won't agree to one that means they aren't untrustworthy. I had a guy charge me for a bunch of roofing he didn't actually use on my roof. Not like a bundle or two, fully 300+ square feet of material. When I brought it up he acted like it was no big deal. "So I over quoted you, so what?" Its like, bro, I already know you are charging more than what you are paying when you buy the shit. I know what markup is. But now you are trying to make me literally buy material that you are going to use somewhere else? Really? Fucker even tried to leave without even leaving me any spares for future repairs, which is what tipped me off on the issue. 30 fucking years of owning a home and you either learn to do it all yourself or get scammed so much you practically hire a lawyer to make up on your work contracts.
>>
>>2991072
You need to rent a truck to carry all the materials
You need to load and unload all this heavy material
You need to mark your layout and space posts evenly
You need to dig holes for posts, usually 1/3rd minimum of the height above ground (5ft above ground post would need 2ft underground.
Each post should be roughly 8ft apart. For 100ft, that's about 12 posts.
Depending on soil quality, a good worker would also pour concrete to keep the fence more stable

Less than $2000 would only cover materials. You expect workers to not get paid or something? 5 grand is maybe on the high end, but around 4 grand is reasonable. You can totally DIY but they'll get this done in one day compared to your uncoordinated lonely ass taking every weekend for a month to finish.

>cant comprehend business overhead of prep and maintenance and materials stocking done offsite
>watches for unapproved nose picking on camera
>goes straight to his shylock lawyer for anything and everything
>30 years of bragging on inflated house prices and shitting on the next generations
why do boomoids do such a good job maintaining the stereotype?
>>
>>2994345
Roof guy sounds shady, but you have no right to be this cancerous to the deck guy. Finishing a deck in 4 hours is pretty impressive. Sounds like he really locked in to do it as fast as possible. And you srsly believe there is no prep involved? Shift starts as soon as he walks on your property? This isn't a waitressing job. Imagine working extra hard just for some bitch to sue you. Poor guy.

Also whomst the fuck charges renovations by the hour? Usually it's an estimated flat price. I really doubt a judge would side with you on that. Story sounds fake but I don't care.
>>
>>2994345
He spent 4 hours buying materials for your ungrateful arse
>>
>>2994345

Since you are a problem customer, I think the expectation is that the tradies should all collude to charge you 2x FMV for any labor whatsoever.
>>
get a flatbed trailer (or two) and be ready to roll at moment's notice and scan Craigslist.

shit cum up "for free, needs gone ASAP"

pro-tip: offer some minor "prize" if they call you, such as 12pak of good beer, or big bag of lemons, or something.
>>
>>2994385
that was 2 hours of talking on the phone, 1 hour of wandering around the store without any clue whatsoever, and another hour of stopping at the convenience store while travelling. sounds about right

They have bills to pay, kids to feed. Don't be a dick.
