my house needs all new windows
how do i know what kind to get and not get scammed?
currently have vinyl windows
temperate, wet costal climate with cold winters and mild summers
its a small house just under 1000sqft + basement but it has a big 250 sqft sunroom so ill need a few

This isn't the help me buy it board. What is wrong with the windows and maybe we can help you fix them.

you can do the demo and installation yourself (maybe need a friend or family member to help with large windows). just look up how to properly waterproof your sill pan, and weather seal around the window. plenty of recent youtube construction videos show how to do this with a variety of tapes or sealers.
milgard and pella are good window brands and get either fiberglass or aluminum frame if you want them to last.
the hardest part will be repairing the exterior appearance again if you have siding or stucco.
tl,dr: you buy the windows only, then do all the labor yourself.

You could just buy a bunch of glass units and reglaze yourself. Most vinyl windows have the same 3/4" overall thickness, but it would be smart to pop the glazing stops and verify before you go to the trouble. As long as you're specific, a glass shop can do the work for you.
3/4" OA dual glaze low-e 366 surface #2 with argon, grids between glass as noted, mill or stainless spacer. Both lites tempered as noted.
...and then list your sizes from there.

If you do replace the windows, most vinyl is more or less the same. It's all just plastic frame with some cheapo hardware for operation, relying on the glass for actual structure. Do not get Pella: they are overpriced and they make their shit backwards (patio doors and half vents with operable panels to exterior, where the rollers and track can get filled with debris and dust can pull lubricant away from wheels). Milgard is now owned by MI Brands, which is an east coast brand collector: do not trust them. Ply Gem is a fine window overall and typically inexpensive. Cascade Windows are also fine as long as you get Cascade series. Jeld-Wen is okay if they can get your order right, but their sightlines aren't very good.
There may be more manufacturers in your area to shop. Follow AAMA standards for install: flash the sill, sealant onto opening, window in, plumb & level, screw off flange, flash legs and head. If you do block frame, you need stainless fasteners and they need to go through the frame. Recess the heads and use vinyl doc to try to smooth over the surface. Vinyl consistency is about 1000# if you need to sand.

get quotes from a bunch of different window companies in your area.

yeah i was gonna maybe attempt to diy the install
one im cheap and two ive seen some terrible so called professional installs, this is a big concern it seems to be a shady business..
maybe ill try one unimportant basement one first see if it makes me want to kill myself or if its doable, ill probably reside the house after so im not super worried about damage that way
