In a bad rental situation right now with outlets that are obviously not installed well. This just happened when I unplugged something. I don't have access to the breaker box. What do I need to do to make sure this doesn't start a fire until I can get the landlord to do something about it?

looks fine to me, that electrical tape is blocking the metal contacts. "you should always turn off the breaker before working on electrical". the yellow highlights are the mounting screws and receivers. the box looks deep behind the facade so you might need longer screws. the metal under the tape is the concern everything else should be okay to touch 120 feels like a puppy bite but it can make your hand close so no metal handled screwdrivers
if you are in a 240v do not touch,

>I don't have access to the breaker box.
That's probably illegal if you live in a civilized country.

The dude is pissing down his jorts because an outlet is loose. He probably doesn't know what a breaker panel looks like. Hell, the loose outlet is less concerning to me than the little winking bit of exposed copper in that shittastic photo. If I could fucking see what that actually is and confirm that is indeed exposed copper that would be the first thing on my list to fix. Next would be the 65 cents in machine screws needed to properly secure the outlet. Finally, the 25 cent outlet cover you could probably find at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

buy an extension cord so you don't need to use that outlet.

>exposed copper
Probably just the ground wire.

Op even though you're a retarded Newegg you don't deserve to be treated badly just go on YouTube and look up "how to install an electrical outlet" and fix this yourself to earn your babby's first ever /DIY/ point

If you are in North America stick a wire nut on the black wire since that will be the live wire. The rest of the outlet should be dead already unless there's another black wire going to it. I'm guessing the wires were backstabbed instead of properly installed

>repairing a live outlet when you can't access or are too stupid to recognize the breaker box
Fantastic advice. Your IQ must be at least 160.

look, dummies.

looks like the box is pushed in at the bottom. theres nothing at all wrong with the outlet wiring or insulation.

The first reply, while an idiot because he referred to the drywall as a facade, was correct.
Just push it back and use other outlets is the easiest solution. looks like the outlet still has a screw in th middle for a cover in it, meaning there probably hasnt been a cover on it in awhile.
this probably isnt new. fix it if you want, first reply told ya how

This.
Easy fix: Get some plastic shims to put behind the drywall ears on the box to shim it out and give support. Without shims, the only thing tat supports the receptacle is the front plate. Which is probably cracked or missing by now.

Also, word of advice: It's a RENTAL. Leave maintenance shit alone. Unlicensed work on multiple tennant dwellings may very well be illegal. Wait 'till you own your own house and burn that down.
