Made a solid fuel forge. Insulated it with sand and used some fire bricks to lay the fuel on. Used a steel pipe with slots cut in it to supply it with oxygen from my bellows($3 hairdryer). Got the anvil from a buddy I work with who got a brand new one helping an old guy fix his garage door, and he didn't need it. I spent $50 on wood for the anvil stand. Pic related isn't the finished stand put together, I've got 12 4x4s in total to make sure it wouldn't fall over(6 I bought from the hardware store that I cut twice to make them level with my pelvis once I put the anvil on top). I've got a ball peen and a cross peen hammer, plus some files, and a punch. First project will be creating proper tongs

Would recommend a solid chunk of tree trunk as a base. The smaller and less secure the base, the more energy is going to be lost in vibration
>>

Like I said, I got 12 of those 4x4s put together to use as a stand. I just had that picture because it started raining while I was working. It's about as wide as this walnut tree I could've used, but I'm gonna split that into workable planks because it's good black walnut

Looks hella nice, good luck on your tongs!

Why are Ameretards like this? Annoying faggots who but her my beautiful Anglo-Saxon mother tongue. Russia, please, nuke them already.

Talk about butchering the language... are you having a heat stroke?
>>
Nice
Tongs are trickier than they seem if you've got no experience, but are great practice. Work on both halves at the same time and keep them as similar as possible at every step instead of making one half and then trying to make a matching one.
>>
>>2993867
Thanks for the tip! Hopefully, I'll get the time to work on them soon. It's supposed to rain all week in my area.

Nice. I built a forge many years ago, but haven't used it yet. Kek. Was going to make a charcoal retort and make my own charcoal for it, and then that hasn't happened yet. Have a few 150ish lb anvils stashed and a little giant 50lb power hammer that needs refurbished.

It's just amazing how weak and soft you guys really are...

during covid oxygen concentrators were a major importance so diy plans for them are everywhere right now. i think they work with two chambers of zeolite one captures the other flushes recommend to put a pressure tank inline to maintain a steady flow.
>>
>>2994044
That looks amazing. When I get around to actually having a shop, I think I'm gonna get a little cheap welding machine so I can make cool metal stands like that. You should do something right now, even if you're just aimlessly banging red hot steel listening to Tom waits

Britbongs can't stand the heat, even real malt vinegar is too much for them.

Thanks man, Yeah I really do need to try it out someday. Have either the hand crank blower or an electric blower that will bolt on there depending on the occasion. I'm still heating and beating stuff as needed using a torch and anvil at the farm shop, but it would be nice to do some full blown forging of stuff someday.

i wonder what causes the gap in heatstrokes
maybe seniloids, maybe gypsies
idk

That one is a Peter Wright. Supposed to be a 150# anvil according to the markings, but my scale weighed it at 146#

those are some rough edges, you might want to check if the face is delaminating, if it's a forge welded hardened face on a cast body

It finally quit raining. Made my first knife blank from a piece of rebar. I quenched it in vegetable oil, and now I just gotta use an angle grinder to cut it off and give it its final shape. This one's going to be a sloyd knife. I think the next one I'll make will be a hook knife
>>
>>2994862
Good start
If it's not already you'll really want to fix your anvil to the base somehow, the more solid the better
Putting a couple eye bolts in the base and tightening down a few loops of chain around the waist of the anvil works well and quiets the ringing a lot.

Yeah that one does have some pretty chipped up edges. I'll look into it someday when I get more time. The one at my farm shop is an arm and hammer brand, that was busted in half before we ever owned it. Previous owner welded it back together and then welded it to some truck rims for a stand. I've beat so much shit back straight on there over the years...

Also have a 3rd anvil stashed away. Not even sure what brand it is, but it's probably around a 150# anvil as well.

Pic rel is the first and only knife I've beat out using a rosebud tip on the torch. I gave it away in an online Christmas gift exchange...

Here it is right after hammering it out and before cleaning up the blade to it's finished shape.

poorfag here, planning on starting with a 55lb anvil. Is that enough?

Also it doesn't have mounting holes. Will anvil that light be stable or should I chain it to the stump it will sit on?
>>
>>2997076
Fine for anything not too large, a ton of historical smithing was done on smaller anvils than that. As long as it's steel and not iron, don't get the old harbor freight cast iron anvils they're not really usable.
And yeah anchoring it as securely as possible is going to be really important. Any movement in the anvil is energy not going into the work.
>>
>>2994432
General question, can you repair the top of an anvil (assuming it is not delaminating) with a good arc welder? I know welding cast iron is a bear and you have to heat the whole area if you want any chance of it sticking but how difficult are we talking?

Also, would you buy an anvil that had been repaired that way? The family has a ranch that has with a few 'yard art' anvils that were taken out of service because their top surfaces were too fucked up to be useful. If I could repair them I could make a pretty penny flipping them.
>>
>>2997090
Generally yes, but it varies depending on how it was made, what the damage is and how exacting you want to be. People have done every kind of repair you can imagine and if it's well done there's nothing wrong with the anvil after but it's easy to do a bad job and make it worse too. I'm no expert but most of the time people are asking about anvil repair the advice is just clean it up and use it as is, as long as you can make the face smooth without eating through the hardened section.

don't forget to normalize and temper your blades
I made some whittling knives and chisels some time ago, I learned that it's best to shape the blade before the heat treatment
you don't have to remove material for hours with stones or risk to overheat the steel with the angle grinder
plus files will work just fine
>>
>>2997340
Yup, did exactly that! Plus I dip the material in water if im using power tools on them
>>
>>2997347
>>2997340
Forgot to mention I also place my material in sand before I do any shaping. Humble sage for double posting.

Has anyone read that book that was on how to build your own machine shop? It was supposed to be a way to start the industrial revolution in the post apocalypse.

Are you going to get into knife making?
