How dangerous is lead, if it's unlikely anybody will get cut and bleed while dealing with it?I'm interested in buying a sheet of it for making figurines I might sell, but I don't want to use it if I run the hazard of customers getting ill from it (or getting ill and blaming it on lead).
>>2994158Lead is toxic (saturnism). Don't use it unless there are no alternatives.
>>2994158not if you like just touch it but i assume youre going to be cutting it by some method in which.... yes very much so
>>2994158>for figuresNo this is retarded
>>2994158> sellBruh just use a normal material and not the brain destroying sweetness. Aluminium and plaster are cheap.
>>2994167Aluminum sheets don't fold like lead does, but if it's that dangerous, I won't buy it.
there is no such thing as a safe level of lead exposureany amount will negatively effect your mental state to some degreeit is possible to work with lead safely, but if you aren't washing your hands after handling it you will absolutely have some amount of exposure
>>2994158Don't buy it if you don't absolutely need it.I deal with lead all the time at work for radiation shielding and it has a biological half life in the brain of 2-3 years, so you can absolutely notice the cognitive effects from bioaccumulation. Also if you drop it and the edge hits you, you will get cut and bleed, happened to me last week.
>>2994191How much Pb bioaccumulation do you have?
>>2994158don't be an idiot use modern soft metals, lead reside and all that would slowly make you retarded and shaky>>2994163>shotas in /diy/the world is gone to shit
>>2994172Lead is a slow, compounding poison. Also it absolutely can be absorbed through the skin. Don't be dumb, buy an alternative.
Bismuth is similar to lead in it's density & malleability without being toxic.Tin is another option for a soft metal, although not nearly as soft as lead or bismuth.Could also just use solder.
its not how dangerous lead is; it is how dumb the judge is.
>>2994158I wouldn't sell lead in a country that has more than 12 tort lawyers.Try zinc or dead soft aluminum. As in look up "dead soft aluminum", that's the actual name.
>>2994172>Aluminum sheets don't fold like lead doesbro if that's your main concern when picking a raw material then you shouldn't be working with materials at all. What you want is the process that will turn whatever material of choice into your product - it doesn't matter if it's bendable or not, it's not fucking playdough
>>2994233> use solderMade of lead. Good alternative.
>>2994158You can scrape dust off of it by rubbing it with a finger. If you're planning to make cast figurines use Pewter.
>>2994158since you are already retarded I doubt it could hurt you any worse.
>>2994158Bunch of fucking retards in this thread thinking lead is some kind of magic negative aura emitting element. It's metal, it doesn't just absorb into your body, not even if you rub your blood all over it and roll around in it. If you live in an old house your pipes are likely soldered with lead, if you live in an old city the water is probably delivered by lead pipes. Even the food that was sealed in lead soldered cans was safe as long as it wasn't wet and acidic. You can still buy lead all over the place for various uses.Obviously making toys out of lead is not a good idea, some kid is going to stick it in his mouth. Get pewter, tin, zamak or whatever and cast your gay little dolls out of it.
>>2994503you're a lead licking retard, piss off
>>2994204Enough that it turned me gay. Before I started working with lead, I was straight as an arrow. After getting cut with it a few times, I started craving cock.
>>2994158Romans loved it. And died.
>>2994158Look for another malleable alternative. Indium maybe? Some kind of copper or brass alloy?
>>2994158It is dangerous, and you need to inoculate yourself against by injecting small amounts of pellets of it into your bloodsream at high velocity. Most people start small, with something like a .177 pellet, then move up to pellets that are 22/1000ths of an inch, but the big-time inner-city boys who are always nagging each other don't waste their time on the small stuff: they go right for those 9mm pellets. Of course, if you're truly serious about preventing any chance of bio-accumulation over time, I suggest you go straight to the guaranteed-to-last-the-rest-of-your-life cranial inoculation with 12-guage pellets; no chance of continuing accumulation, and shortly after that inoculation, you are protected forever.
>>2994503>Lead used to seal pipes, likely sealed away by calcium deposits.VS>working with a full sheet of lead to make figurines.Yes, lead isn't radium, but working with a massive sheet of it to build figurines is just begging to get a dose. Considering there really isn't an advantage here when compared to the other things mentioned in this thread why on earth would you even want to defend it?
>>2994158They used to make pipes out of it for hundreds of years. The only effect is that if you have it every day for decades you become a bit dumb.
>>2995105
>>2995108And all of those people are just kind of dumb, not dead.
>>2994503Seriously makes me laugh how paranoid people get over lead these days. When I was young lead was everywhere. The world didn't end.In fact, people seemed healtheir in general. We're definitely being exposed to some shit today that's worse than lead.
>>2994417Most modern solders are going to be completely lead free. Yes, you can still get leaded solder, however it's clearly labeled as such which is required by law.
>>2994158Figurines used to be made of pewter which is just a basic tin alloy. It's basically very crude solder. These guys sell lead free pewter minis as merch:https://shop.stellarjockeys.com/products/1-144-scale-mini-spacer-zolligThey sell these for cheap so it can't be that expensive to make. It's also much MUCH safer to use. These guys are pretty cool and they probably would give you tips if you asked nicely.
>>2995108How funny there's a dip.from the 70s oil crash
>>2995144So, you really enjoyed eating those paint chips as a kid, huh?
>>2995155Most modern solders are with lead, there's also leadless solder for water pipes/etc. but it's not more modern than today's leaded solder by any standard
>>2994158Lead is extremely bad https://leadelimination.org/ Studies so far have not identified any blood lead level that is safe. In fact, the relationship between lead exposure and neurotoxic effects is stronger at lower blood lead levels https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1257652/
>>2994172>Aluminum sheets don't fold like lead does, but if it's that dangerous, I won't buy it.If you need the aluminum to be soft, you need to heat the aluminum up to its annealing temperature, at which point it will become soft and easily bent. The aluminum will work harden as it is being bent, requiring occasional re-annealing. To anneal the aluminum, buy some Ivory soap bars, (literally Ivory brand, from a supermarket), and rub some soap lines on the aluminum. Put a mirror against a wall, and heat the opposite side of the aluminum sheet from which you rubbed the Ivory soap, and use the mirror to tell when the Ivory soap has turned black. Let the aluminum cool down. The aluminum should be annealed and soft now. Have fun bending the aluminum. When the aluminum starts getting stiff, heat it again. Lead remains soft and flexible way longer, but the lead will rub off on your hands, and this can then get on food, etc. this is the major safety issue with lead, as well as fumes if you melt it. You can definitely get sued for lead poisoning if you sell items made from lead though.
>>2995579>studiesStudies also say that the world is going to end in 12 years. Is there actual evidence, or just academia?
>>2994158>sheet of it for making figurinesImagine dying of lead poisoning for "figurines". Buy sheet metal like a normal person. Unless you are dealing with something emitting gamma radiation, lead is just pointless and dangerous.
>>2995973>It's isnt real but if it is you must do the work for me to show the proof!Go back to /x/ or /pol/ you raging moron.
So you're going to poison not only yourself, but a bunch of unwitting consumers. Kids love toys, they eat them, suck on them, you can't stop kids doing it unless you put your "figurines" in a gun safe.Handling lead is ok for adults, if you wear gloves, but the second you cut it, touch it, by degree you suffer lead poisoning. There is no harmless amount of lead, and it only accumulates. And there are so many better ways to do... whatever you're doing.
lead sheets are literally being used by plumbers to this day to make shower pansstill super common in big cities in old high risessince a shower leak trashes a lot of units below them and nothing is better than lead at the job
>>2996447You also find it used in roofing.
>>2996447That's a static, sealed, and covered emplacement. OP is trying to sell toys made of lead.
>>2994158Just don't market the figurines as for kids. You might investigate using pewter instead as there are lead free formulations of pewter, then casting the figurines.
>>2995104>would you even want to defend it?Because misinfo is how we got to this gay little bubble world that we live in where they jail you for facebook posts and the new generations never grow up.
I've worked with lead sheets on a press brake to make door jamb liners for hospital rooms. Never got cut.
>>2994158>handling lead and washing your hands afternot dangerous >handling lead then not washing your hands before eating somewhat dangerous>grinding or scraping lead in a way that creates dustdangerous>heating, melting or welding near lead without a fume hood and respiratorholy shit retard, what are you doing
>>2997253my dad used to melt wheel weights to make fishing weights all the time that's why you never trust thrift store pots and pans. Never know what people do with them
>>2994191I did a week fast and had blue in my earwax. Ever hear of something like that?
>>2994503Seconding zamak
>>2994172>looking for foldable material for my product>paper? no>lead? yes
>>2994158F the pussies in this thread; I just had my chimney renovated and had them use lead instead of that gay EPDM shit. I plan to live here for my entire life and will outlive some faggy rubber, the lead will outlive me.
>>2998102>Another retard equating a permanent, sealed application completely out of reach with making a fucking toy out of it
we drank lead paint for breakfast and it never hurt us. you see these millennial kids who can't even read and all they do is watch tick tock, you think they ever ate any lead? probably not because you pussies banned it like you want to ban everything good in the world.
