>>2995602Unless it's one of those trains you can sit on, it probably doesn't matter. Generally putting beams directly on top of posts is sturdier than bolting/screwing them in from the side though.

I was always taught that fasteners are for holding the wood together, not supporting the loads. Ideally, you notch out the beams so the full width and height of the joist can sit in the notch and fasten them together.
