It's not nearly as scary as it seems. I learned to solder to replace a fuse in my Sega CD. I used a practice kit from Amazon and it was honestly overkill, although I would suggest playing around with broken electronics first to get a feel for it. It's super easy for tiny jobs like gamepad repairs. Just watch a few videos first. Tinning it is heating some fresh solder on it before doing the soldering job. It helps in a variety of ways and basically makes it easier to solder, and provides more consistent results, than you would get otherwise.

What is an amateur-friendly way of filling in the top part of the wall to make it look like the rest? I have no experience with plastering, a little experience with using tiling mortar and putty for little repairs.

The top part is like 2cm deeper than the bottom part, including the plastered chunks of wall. Only the part on the very right side to the right of the wiring is just as thick, but it slants towards the wall and is loose so I'm going to remove it anyway before starting.

At soldering iron temps, lead just barely turns to liquid. It doesn't actually create lead fumes at low temps. Only after say 450C does it start to create toxic fumes.
The smoke is actually the rosin/flux which is nasty stuff, can burn your throat and lungs.

You WILL get lead dust everywhere, when you melt the solder it does spit out large and small particles of dust. Now if you get that on your hands and then eat, you will ingest the lead.

Lead gets absorbed into your bones and lasts decades, it also destroys your brain. Solder in a place you can clean up and wipe down, also always wash your hands after handing solder.

I'm setting up my garage to be more of a chill space. I have a dartboard, and I want a unique scoreboard. I have an old Sector 9 longboard that I'm going to sand down, prime, and then paint chalkboard paint on it. It's carbon fiber, any tips for how deep or what kind of grit to use on it, and why? I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff.

Also, if you have a better idea, I'm all for it. I was originally going to cut out an alligator, and do the same thing like picrel, but I didn't have the wood or a jigsaw, and I didn't think I'd do as good with the cutting.

I've got this trash quality door that splits and then sags on one side, making it scrape heavily against the floor. I tried glue, but that doesn't hold. Do I just put a screw or an expansion plug along the green line or at an angle to hold it? Or is there anything better/simplier I can do?

Lead free solder is hated because it flows worse, it takes a lot more heat, and it smokes a lot more. It uses stronger more aggressive flux in a larger quantity, so it can irritate your lungs easier.

metal work hardens as it's shape gets manipulated, so when it was originally bent out of shape and then re-bent back into place you work hardened it. it's technically more brittle than it was before because of that but just a few bends probably isn't going to affect much.
annealing it relieves internal tension within the metal so it stops being brittle. for your use you want your metal to be "soft" so that it doesn't shatter under tension or if you drop it/bump it against a hard surface.
probably doesn't really matter at the end of the day but that's the principles.

Can I do something like this to mount an outdoor access point on an i-beam column? The unistrut pieces will mount to the i-beam lips with beam clamps and spring nuts. My only concern is windy weather. Will a long pole like that create too much forces on the emt conduit clamps?

I am an idiot and accidentally did something so the screws that hold the vat down cannot screw fully into the machine so every time the build plate raises from the FEP, the entire vat is lifted slightly. Is there a way I can fix this? Somehow it doesn't seem to ruin prints, idk why.
I'm not sure whether there's resin at the bottom or if I've ruined the actual threading, it screws fine 90% of the way.

need a cactus poker tool. this metal bar is about 2.5ft and about 1ft too short. also its thick metal maling the shaft too heavy for 1hand poking tiny 6oz cactus paddles off the floor and into container but the metal is also just a little too weak to be throwing 40lb cactus trunks over shoulder or 20ft down the hillside. tip just keeps bending back and forth with the heavy stuff. suggestions?

We don't have a leatherworking thread so I guess I will ask here. My dad used to keep a spare car key in his wallet. He had this little leather bit the size of a credit card with a hollow spot in it that would fit a flat metal key. That way you could slip it into a credit card slot and not have it fall out. I also keep a spare key there but it keeps falling out as I don't have the leather bit. I want to make my own but I don't remember how it captured the key. The keys were brass so it wasn't a magnet. The leather part was open on one side so it wasn't like a pouch. It was super thin. Not much thicker than a normal credit card. Do they still make these or does anyone remember how they work?

Check both batteries, if those work fine in other tools, likely the mower's thermal protection (either the sensor/chip is failing or something is actually overheating). Would also be good to check battery voltage immediately after the mower cuts out or while it cuts out, there are some hard to diagnose failure modes on batteries. If all else fails and your batteries are genuinely good and aren't too smart for their own good you could get an aftermarket brushless controller and swap that in directly hooked up to the mower motor. If the batteries are too smart for their own good they might refuse to work in this scenario.

HDPE is literally cutting boards. It is VERY easy to work with in terms of cutting/drilling, much harder to do finishing on (hard to sand/polish), gluing you need a glue that works with it.
It's an extremely resilient/resistant material, does not break easy, does not degrade with time. However, for a table surface make sure to get UHMW 1000, the lower grade ones are much softer, easier to scratch and more bendy. UHMW 1000 is the cutting board one. You can go to any generic store and look at plastic cutting boards for the material feel.
Note that this still scratches fairly easy compared to regular table top materials.

Best lube for optics. I have some old binoculars where the lube on the focus threats and bushings has dried out, jamming the mechanism. Currently trying to use/learn FreeCAD to model a little house for my cats, and I want to include a simple heated floor pad as part of it. I know I am, but I don't think much in my day to day so it's fun to worry about things like this. All I care about is that the floor being more or less evenly heated without any cold spots.
18.5" x 15" x 12" ideally, since that'll give me enough space to put those replaceable cardboard scratch pads on top. Inner dimensions would be 16.5" x 13" x I'm not sure how thick the floor is going to be yet.
I'm thinking that doing some layout where the tubing loops back on itself should help regulate the temperature and prevent cold spots.

could yall tell
me why my stupid idea for a diy mold test would not work?
i want to paint one side and edges of a piece of drywall, then moisten the drywall and then place the drywall on upper and lower portions of wall, -unpainted side placed against wall- where i suspect mold could be growing. then i want to check on the drywall in a day, then a few days then many more days to see if any areas are growing obvious mold. would this work?

picture is what the room looks like. i have upstairs neighbors who are not very friendly or chatty but i have gotten out of them that there are no bathrooms directly above my room. i know they have a bathroom near my closet and i cut open small squares of drywall there and found no signs of mold.

also the crosshatch floor area has dried up surface mold where the previous tenant had their mattress directly on the floor. i lifted up the worst section of floorboard and there seems to be no mold growth on the bottom sides of the floorboard or the subfloor.

the room sits 3feet above the ground and i have a crawl space under our house. i found no mold or signs of leaks under the house. the little balcony area hoovers above the ground.

above that balconyish-outcrop area is also a flat area that seems like it could be catching water. the girl who lives above me really seems to dislike me so i am hesitant to try and invade her space and inspect that area. her roommate was the one that suggest that area could be catching water.

another alternative could be putting three mold test in my room: closet, triangle-window-thingy-area, near my door and a fourth in the living room and see how the mold growth compares to each other.

the hose end is 1/4" compression which i think is 7/16-20. you want an adapter to nation pipe thread (npt). a truck repair shop will have it and homeless depot/blowes might but itll be $$$

Those are typical air guns, like other anon says, 1/4” NPT. So you get a male threaded 1/4” NPT quick connect fitting for whatever style female quick connect you have.

Tbqhwy, the like $10 air tool starter kits almost always have a blow gun just lioe that in them, plus the quick connect fitting and some other bits and pieces. If the fitting alone costs $4, get a kit for $6 more with a blow gun and some teflon tape

You can get food safe resin. The main thing is that you'll need to plug the hole outside, then fill with resin and over so there's a flat layer above the chip layer inside the vessel, otherwise the chip will degrade. It still might.

What's the best way to replace this light /diy/? It's in a really retarded position. Tried reaching it with an 8 ft ladder from the stair landing but on top of the ladder not being tall enough the light is too far from the landing to reach without really having to lean over which I wouldn't really be comfortable with because it's still a good ways to the bottom of the stairs. Is there like some of modular scaffolding system I could get that could safely be set up on the stairs themselves or some shit?

I know next to nothing about wells and we'll pump motors. Some guy took a hacksaw to this month's ago to prime it and charged me $300.

Can I prime it using that faucet at the top? By funneling water into it? I need to cut power to the motor for awhile, and a well leak in the ground means I think I'll have to prime again.

can anyone recommend a decent grease gun for under $25? or are all grease guns of this style trash? 3oz sounds very small. visually the smaller tubes i see at walmart look more like 6oz... are 3oz and 14oz the only sizes? I woild like a grease gun that comes with a flex hose and refillable tube.... are refillable tubes a PITA to work with?

What do you actually need from the kit? The only special thing is the little spoon to spin the adjuster, and a flathead screwdriver works just fine. Pliers or whatever to stretch the spring. That’s probably why none of your friends have them, you don’t really need the tools.

I need help bros, a door check on my car is broken, and the clunk when I open the door is super annoying. I replaced it, but the junk part broke in the same place a day later. The plastic cracked at the hinge where it connects to the body. OEM replacements are hundreds of dollars. So the only way I can see to "fix" it is to wrap something around the hinge part, holding it together so the crack can't spread and cause the clunking. There's a little hole in the strut that I could thread something through, and then around the hinge.

So my question is, is there some sort of flexible, very strong, steel cable type fastener I could buy that would fit through that little hole, and can be tightened like a zip tie/hose clamp? We're talking maybe 4-5mm wide maximum.

I don't know much about much, including what a clevis is. But I took a picture of the crack, here. Thread a wire through that little hole, then around the hinge, tighten it up, and I believe it would hold that crack closed and prevent the clunking. Note that it's steel covered in plastic, so the strength at the hole shouldn't be an issue.

I've looked a few places and every door check I can find looks like the same design. I know that the crack is causing the click, since I can see the hinge plastic sort of snapping back and forth (because the crack widens the hole) as I open the door, causing the noise. This is a common issue with my car model, the check was poorly designed. And it's not easy to replace, so I don't want to bother when it will probably just break again. Hence why I'm trying to fix it in such a crude way.

I have a piece of 3mm bungee cord I want to tighten and loosen against itself while it's wrapped around a pole. I currently just set it at one tightness by wrapping the loose end around the pole, but ideally I'd want something very simple I can use to tighten and loosen how taut it holds the weight.

The key issue is I can't just thread it through a buckle, this has to be something that's as easy as just wrapping it around the pole, and can be quickly removed and reused because I need to take the whole thing down constantly. The best thing I can think of is some kind of 2 cord clamp that lets you slide the cords out from the side when the clamps aren't engaged, but even then I'd prefer 1 hand operation.

Usually its either self tapping screws near the ends of the retainer or the channels of the retainer itself were clamped shut.

If the former, just get a phillips head bit to remove.

If the latter you have to pry apart the channel to reopen it, usually with a flathead.

First though, take a knife and cut it approximately down the center for the entire length. It is a lot easier to remove in halves.
