Has anyone here done a automatic swing gate before?I was thinking about buying just the actuator itself and running it from a esp32 and some shit I have laying around but looking at the prices of just the actuators are basically as expensive as a cheap Chinese hydraulic system for a tip trailer.Kinda wondering now because it would be much faster with hydraulic since it needs a third as much leverage as electric
>>2998971I did a swing gate opener for like $250 all included. Obviously it's not a huge gate, but the prices here aren't particularly high on the low-end for no brand chinkshit. Hydraulic has way more points and modes of failure, and if you started doing add-ons like a pressure control valve for safety then suddenly you'd be making jumps of $100 for each element.
>>2998973Yeah the issue is it's a 14ft gate so I'd need something relatively strong.I don't really think safety is that necessary, I can just guesstimate a shear pin
the tree is in the middle of the road or the road is going through the tree
>>2998971You should make this a rope-and-pulley system, sink another post into the ground nearby and you can run a long rope between some pulleys to the gate and have the end of the rope be 1000ft or more away from the gate for remote opening
>>2998971https://www.grainger.com/product/6DLV2?gucid=N:N:FPL:Free:GGL:CSM-1946:tew63h3:20501231You need a Pullz-All and steel cable to open and close the gate
>>2998971Real solution: https://www.gatecrafters.com/product_detail_35575_25575.aspxBut its for professional ranchers, so it may not suit your needs This is like the device in OP, but an elite unit
>>2998971Do you really need it to be a swing gate? Maybe a sliding gate would be easier, you could use a smaller motor to operate it btw
>>2998971Hey OP if you're still here just go back out to this gate and use a chain and padlock to keep it closed. I don't really want you making that gate automatic
Look up using a garage door opener for a gate. Relatively simple and cheaper than other options in this thread.
>>2998971You should use a Chinese actuator instead of hydraulics, electric is more reliable, can be used in all weather conditions. On alibaba you can get a major discount if you buy 10 or more of the same motorshttps://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/12v-24v-Linear-Actuator-IP66-Waterproof_1600770022966.html?priceId=08d5ded190ea453ca0e07460dfdcc12b&spm=a2700.prosearch.0.i57.533267afvZAqvP
i wouldn't trust the waterproofing on alibaba dude, they say its waterproof but what if they cheap out on the seal and your motor shorts and burns itself out or something? would rather pay a little more for an american one
>>2999097>cheap out on the sealIt doesn't matter, it's not an underground unitI've installed similar units (non-chinese) and they're designed to be mounted only one way up and have a few small drain holes on the bottom of the motorI wouldn't trust the generic linear actuators that aren't designed for gates tough
I made a 12ft swinging custom metal gate that probably weighs 500 lbs with one of those ghost control units. IIRC they have a chart to size them correctly. It's used for a residential driveway, so it gets used at least four times a day. I learned the wind will blow even that fat fucker around around so you have to get the "zombie lock" option they sell. Hasn't had an issue and been probably 8 years now.I grew up where we had manually open up a gate every time you wanted to get in or out of the driveway. That's what made me spend the money on an automatic one.
>>2999123>I grew up where we had manually open up a gate every time you wanted to get in or out of the driveway.god forbid>>2998971powered gate isn't typically something you diy with 'a esp32 and some shit' because a kid trips over within 100 feet of it and suddenly the city wants you to show its legit and not a baby skull crusher. most countries require e.g. two forms of sensing, auto reverse, certification.im not trying to yuck your yum just get ready to bend over and lube up because people get bent out of shape about electric gates specifically.garage doors are similar but people rarely diy them to this extent
>>2999124how do i open a gate without getting out of the car simplest solution i can think of is to spring load the leaves of the gate like those door closers but to open then you unlatch from the car window and it gently opens up

>>2999153the rope and pulley unironically would work if it was long enough to reach the car
>>2999010wtf
>>2999010If this happens it might be better to just uproot the tree, otherwise you'll have to cut a passage through it for cars
