Do you know any useful knots?

Oh dear...

Yes. I got a pro-knot card thing over the pandemic to use as a fidget toy, and it's become a real fixation. Half of my shit has paracord on it now. I no longer have any rattling zippers anywhere.

I never leave home without it

I always tell people how to tie alpine butterflies and stevedore knots. They're easy to teach and let people do new things with cordage.

I know of this one knot you tie, then you lose all your money.

Rope jokes?

I know an alpine butterfly and a bowline and a truckers hitch but you use an alpine butterfly instead of whatever is in the textbooks.

Best knots in my opinion
for joining ropes: zeppelin bend or ashley bend
tying the corner of a tarp: sheet bend
shoelaces: "ian's secure shoelace knot"
fishing: palomar knot is as strong and secure as it gets, i don't use anything else
for binding: constrictor hitch
for a loop: alpine butterfly or double bowline
honorable mentions: buntline hitch, adjustable grip hitch, trucker hitch

knots that suck ass:
carrick bend: complicated and ineffective
bowline: easy to tie but very weak. double bowline is way way stronger
standard shoelace knot: unties way too easily
granny knot: use a reef knot instead

>for joining ropes: zeppelin bend or ashley bend
just as fussy and complicated as the carrick bend, just use a sheet bend for anything non-life threatening and tie a reef knot/lock on top or use your typical double fisherman's/EDK knots otherwse.
>for binding: constrictor hitch
good luck untying it again, lmao. clove hitch is quick, easy, versatile and holds very well around soft objects, round turn and 2 half hitches is super secure around posts and is basically a clove hitch around the rope.
>bowline: easy to tie but very weak.
there's nothing weak about bowline unless you're a climber fucking with dyneema ropes and your life depends on it. double bowline is not meaningfully more secure than regular one for those applications either. you want either a tieoff overhand for the loose tail or any of the locked bowline variants like scott's locked bowline, EBSB or yosemite finish(if you tie it cleanly).

you shouldn't learn 50 different knots poorly, learn 4 or 5 well and learn to apply or modify them depending on the task. bowline, sheet bend(bowline), clove hitch, alpine butterfly/bowline on a bight, figure 8, overhand, reef knot.
