Need a new HVAC system and thinking of putting it in myself. Like $6000 labor just because they have a few tools I don't? It doesn't look too complicated. Most of the tools I could rent easily enough, like a vacuum pump. Others I'm not so sure about like refrigerant recovery? (Or just vent it to atmosphere...)Can always pay to have the system filled once its installed too, but even that part doesn't seem too hard. Does the manufacturer still honor the warranty if you DIY the install? How do you prove you did a good job of it?
And I've seen mini split system that basically just go together and come pre-charged and everything. Not sure if there is one I can put in place on a standard HVAC unit to use the existing air vents tho?

You could meet at a middle ground. Install the units, run the lines, and then get a certified HVAC tech to come in and connect it all up and charge the system.

To do a regular split AC unit like a burger’s residential home, you need to have the proper circuit breakers and disconnects sized for the unit, play with 240V, wire the low voltage and the 240V, install the condensate drain, braze the lines without having any leaks or starting a fire. Even if OP did have the freon and filled it, there’s some math to be done to make sure things are working properly. At minimum the guy who is filling the unit would be double checking tons of OP’s work before frying something or wasting a bunch of freon.To end it though, the EPA cert thing is sort of gay because all of the newer refrigerants are pretty harmless. I did the course and it was absurd the gubbmint controls the new stuff after learning about it all.

The best thing that helped me was to find a detailed tutorial installation video online for the exact product you are going to install, Watch the entire thing before you even buy it, to see if it something you want to handle.

The lines on the outdoor unit have valves that keep the refrigerant in the compressor and you open them with an allen key (or a wrench).If you're renting tools, try to see if you can rent a set of digital manifold gauges that can double as a micron gauge. That way you don't need a separate hose setup just for vacuuming. Those mini-splits with "pre-charged lines" are more DIY, but they usually come with pretty short linesets. They can be extended with the right stuff, but at that point you might as well just get a system that you have to buy regular refrigerant linesets for. Oh yeah, you need a tank of nitrogen to do a pressure test to make sure your lines don't have leaks.

>>3002834There’s less of a chance because there is math and sizing that goes into these things and aside from a giant code book like sparkies with the NEC, HVAC might be the trade where you need to factor in the most variables for a given diagnosis. Air flow in different spots, dry bulb and wet bulb temps, temps and pressures on two different sides of the system, plus medium/high and low voltage. A good HVAC tech has to know a lot.
