Probably the U1 then. Not sure how well it does with TPU, but for TPU and heated chamber maybe the X2D although the P1S would probably be better for TPU. You have to weigh how much you want to print TPU over multi color.

Just get an inexpensive printer and jump in. To me the biggest challenge in 3D printing is modeling original parts, but if you are only downloading finished models then the rest is easy -- just slice and print. Today's printers don't need as much maintenance and tweaking, but even if you run into problems the learning curve is gradual. A dozen hours of YouTube tutorials will go long way.

Bambu is the easiest one to use. I've been to a few festivals with a few different print sellers and absolutely every last one of them has used bambu. "Oh I haven't had any luck with anything else" or "Oh I've heard terrible things about flash forge!" One or two sellers bitching online would be skill issue, and it IS a skill issue, but it's an understandable skill issue, because sellers are more interested in avoiding it altogether than having total control over the process.

HOW the fuck EVER, Bambu isn't showing any interest in adopting multi-extruder multicolor yet. They have hot end swaps, which take care of the filament waste in multicolor, but not the time. You can get a snap maker u1 if you have more of an interest in this stuff than dragons.

A downside of the U1 is that you are strictly limited to 4 colours.
H2C is way slower, but you can print up to 6 without waste, and potentially like 24 with (a fuck ton of) waste.

Sometimes I get lucky and don't have to make any edits to a few revisions. Sometimes I have to edit my model a shit load of times just to get my ideas in order or account for unforseen design issues. Sometimes I have to remodel just for it to print the way I want. I modeled a centrifuge for 50ml containers, wish has a lot of moving parts. Some parts of my model were good on the first print, but others required more finesse. I don't beat myself up when I've got back to 3d model a part for the Nth time. It's called rapid prototyping for a reason. I also enjoy the modeling process, though. And my printer nozzle is .8 so things print faster and make it less of a headache/time sink. To answer your question regarding knowing everything you want, I suppose it's how complicated your design is and how well you can model it in your head before making it digital. I spend more time modeling it in my head like an autist before it ever gets 3d modeled.

first print reveals a MAJOR failing to understand scale, or that i've used an inside measurement for an outside reference, or that some geometry is impossible to slide parts past each other in reality.

then i do an afternoon of edits, and print again

print 2 is almost always 'close enough' but has some portion that needs re-refining that i didn't notice on the first print because it was always destined for the bin, like the heatset inserts needing more clearance to avoid blowing out an important wall, or the screws i measured the clearance of for sockethead screws now need to be countersunk, so i can either drop down 2mm in length, or just put more clearance on the far side.

3rd print is usually a week later, print 2 will usually fail at some point before then, because i left some part undersized, or the wall tuned out to be 0.5mm, so its 2 walls in most places and it warped under the screwforce and no longer fits.

It is entirely dependent on what it is im making. Some stuff is done in one shot with maybe a revision to get perfect tolerances. Sometimes I will create something with a few revisions and come back to it weeks later with a complete redesign. Some of the functional prints I make and sell are extremely creative in how they function for a very simple product. I have competitors sometimes and they just cannot compete unless they rip the design entirely, but I already price everything at the floor and have reviews so the only way they can compete is selling at a loss lol. The chinese are getting close but im about to smack the piss out of them during seasonal warehouse price surges. Eat a loss to cause max pain to the chinese.

Filled it with water and left it overnight to see if it was waterproof. No leaks, so I added the sponge and parchment paper. Now it leaks.

Printed it again, with more layers & perimeters. Was fine overnight, started leaking the next day when I added the sponge. Printed it again with even more layers & perimeters, at 0.1mm layer height. Same thing. Varnished it, same thing.

I don't understand how adding some sponge causes it to leak when it doesn't leak otherwise.

I have a problem, two unrelated problems really.
My bowden tube and print head cables are sagging and contacting the bed and when I look at pictures of this printer, the cables are always standing tall like an erect cock while mine is flaccid and drooping.
What am I doing wrong? Just too long a bowden tube? How short can I make it before it's too short?

My second problem is probably easier, I have a couple of half-clogged nozzles that I can't really clear by drawing filament out of them and poking needles through them.
What would work for cleaning nozzles off the printer?
Stick them on a soldering iron and scour with steel/brass wool?
Could I burn pla/petg off them with a bbq lighter?
How about a heat gun?

Some of them have poor print quality and the one in there right now is spitting out hairlike string that's much finer than it's intended 0.4mm, it made a kind of spongy print that I can crush in my fingers.

I would try disengaging the extruder motor and try pushing filament through a hot nozzle by hand. if hand fed looks ok then see if the extruder is binding up when it gets hot. my sv08 used to do that i had to sand a hair off the extruder motor shaft because it would start rubbing after a couple hours printing and give me the spongy print problem like you mentioned

Did that, I pulled out the bowden tube and pushed some filament into the hotend by hand, then turned it off and waited a bit and pulled it out, trying to do a cold draw.
It didn't really work but pushing it through by hand got the same result as with the drive engaged so it does seem to be the nozzle.

Did you end up doing a proper cold pull? There’s some nylon nozzle-cleaning filament you can buy. You can burn the plastic out of nozzles with a gas torch, but I’d only do it with a solid brass or maybe stainless nozzle. Hardened steel nozzles will lose their hardness and bimetal nozzles could come apart.

What have you been printing with? Fibre reinforced filament? Glow in the dark or wood filament?

Good guess, I did actually, with the new nozzle anyway.
And that failed mid print with a blockage that I put down to the filament being pretty old (and not dried) PLA polywood. It ended up ejecting the bowden tube and fucking up the coupler which I had to swap out.
This (plus that I was no longer certain the roll had enough filament to finish the print) made me give up on the polywood and switch to PETG, I ran into blockages, cleared them, tried again and this time it came out spongy but seemed to be feeding properly and I figured I'd at least get the part and since it's only an under-desk rubbish bin, I didn't care about the quality that much.
It also ran into a blockage but at least printed half the bin which is fine since it's just a shorter bin now.
I'll post a pic later, the surface is fucking awful but it is technically functional.

I've been printing PETG almost 24/7 for weeks, switched to polywood for this one thing and it fucked up, so I went back to PETG and it's still somewhat fucked.

I ordered a set of needles since the one that came with the printer is now bent.
I've also ordered a handful of nozzles which feels like a lazy solution but I guess is what we do.
Should get some spare couplers now that I think about it.

If you want a P2S, get the P2S.

I recently got my first Bambu, its the X2D and all the quality of life stuff is actually pretty great. They are hyped/overhyped for a reason. All the horse shit checks it does before every print really does make shit just work.

Open source hardware doesn’t matter at all. If you need a replacement part and there isn’t a 3D model of it from the manufacturer, it’s perfectly feasible to reverse engineer it. Circuit boards are more opaque, but it’s still feasible to reverse engineer the faulty section, or just replace with a 3rd party circuit board with the same function.

Bet you could use a few purpose-trained neural networks to do that for you these days. It's only getting cheaper to train them.

What makes you think we're past that already?
Bambu and Anycubic dont give root access so you cant install OS firmware on them. So far they allow lan-only mode, but for how long?

Creality allows root but do picrel AND they locked out root on K1C 2025 with nobody managing to pressure them to unlock it.

Does anyone here have experience with trying to get good translucent PETG walls? I'm getting pretty decent results, but one thing I haven't figured out is why I keep getting what looks like bubbles.
I don't think they're moisture bubbles, since this spool went straight from the vacuum sealed package to the filament dryer and was in there for 8 hours before beginning this print, as well as being actively dried and fed out of the dryer during the print. It also only ever occurs on one wall in the same general area, the other 3 walls are perfect.
I'm printing 0.6mm layer height with a 0.8mm nozzle at 250C on an Ender 5 S1. Speed is set to 15mm/s for perimeters.
I think I've seen something similar to this on my opaque PETG prints too, but it's much more noticable with translucent filament.

Yeah, I thought it might have been seam related too, but I enforced the seam on a corner explicitly and nothing seam-related appears on that side in PrusaSlicer.

Could make sense, but it isn't always on the same wall. It's always on only one wall, but not always the same one. I feel like it's related to the seam location in some way, so I'll probably try putting the seam on a different corner next and see if it moves.

They're racks for CDs. The first pic makes them look cloudier than they really are, it doesn't look too bad with something directly behind the wall. Sort of a discount ribbed acrylic effect with tall layer height. I almost wanna try 0.8 layer height with a 1.0 nozzle.
Though in picrel I accidentally forgot to move the seam from the automatic location, so that looks bad. But on this one it had the bubbling/blemishes on one of the top/bottom walls with the guide rails on them instead of the thinner side walls like the first pic I posted, which is why I think the seam location is a factor.

So long as there’s one or two major companies making printers with root access and open source firmware, and so long as there’s one or two open source slicers, its enough. Snapmaker’s U1 has root access, so do all Prusas, Neptune 4s and probably other Elegoos, all Sovols, etc. Also despite not providing root access, Creality and Anycubic and FlashForge are also likely in violation of the GPL. Once the legal guns come out, they go both ways.

incorporates their new "CFS nano" they're pushing into their i7 bed slinger, but onto the old K2 frame with 4 spools attached on one side. Tidy solution since so many companies now offer multiple spool holders on the sides of their printers and with creality you pay extra for their CFS or go bust.
Looks like the upcoming K3 tool changer also uses that module and its retrofitted to the i7 (which launched with a kinda nifty "Refill" double spool holder, and an enclosed CFS lite) ahead of the K3 launch. So the pro version with heating and 5-6 colors will be closer to $1300 to push people into buying the 8 color K3 Plus for $1600.

Must have been hallucinating. I was thinking of the K3 itself, and figured that since it was the successor to the K2 series it would naturally come with a heated chamber. Might be wrong.

That's not the sticking point for me. Ikea tub lid is cheap and effective, and it should be quite feasible to relocate the filament buffers to a custom dry box. There's already a design for a sealed spool-holder that attaches on the side of the printer itself, but it's not perfect.
Instead it's the nozzle ecosystem that's making me apprehensive, and the fact it wasn't designed to run in a heated chamber so it's hard to say how it would last if you add your own chamber heater.

The MX Pro's shallow lid makes me suspicious of the filament path routing, especially for brittle filaments. But I wonder if the laser engraver will allow it to use the laser to mark prints while they're still stuck to the bed? Or char support interfaces?

Well they're just routing them behind the printer and into the holes above the toolhead array. The idea is for the PTFE tubes to slide in an out. Originally they said it would need 30cm of clearance behind. Recently they started saying just 10cm clearance for tubes and heat dissipation but also raised the MSRP by $500 and are extremely careful not to show that specific part of the printer (creality avoids showing the portion above the nozzle array too btw). Maybe they're cooking up something? I dont know.

I think its a gimmick like with the bambu one and will need a whole separate plate. But Bambu iirc had a special camera for alignment, this one doubt will have that.

It's more about the angle. The K1 and K1 max had problems because the PTFE tube coming out of the toolhead had a pretty tight cornering to fit under the lid, it's a main reason behind why people design lid risers (>>3003569). The tube was also always rotating a little in its coupling.

And de-moulded. I was a little hasty and it cracked as I was getting it out of the mould, hadn’t cured fully yet I guess, but I wanted to be able to trim the meniscus before it became too hard. Its glued back together thanks to super glue. It’s a tiny bit lopsided due to the imprecise clamping of the 8P8C socket, and the resin level dropped a bit as it cured, but overall it fits well enough. I’ll leave it to cure overnight before putting any permanent load on it though.

And the three piece mould is fully intact, so I can reuse it if I ever need to.

My ender 3 (that I used to print the mould) is fine. I'm retrofitting a snapmaker original to use a different motor, which requires a motor driver to reduce the speed, hence this bracket to hold the motor driver in place of the original bracket (which I lost). The snapmaker can be used as a 3D printer, but the non-silent stepper drivers, difficult to access direct extruder, slow lead-screw X and Y axes, and shitty stock firmware makes it pretty bad as a 3D printer. I bought an SKR mini to replace its controller, but that would be a bit of work to wire up and manage for something I don't use. But I figure I might as well try it for PCB milling.

That's meant to be clear epoxy for fibreglassing, it comes out a bit yellow. It's not neon piss coloured in person, the photo white balance looks a bit off. I could have added a layer or two of fibreglass to strengthen the casting, but figured that would just increase the chances of trapped air bubbles.

Anyone has any experience printing ASA on these? Should I just pivot to an enclosed printer like a centauri carbon? Yeah it would probably be pretty easy to buy a vinyl cutting tip and 3D print a rigid enough holder. But the work area is pretty small, and I could also just use the laser to cut vinyl if I really wanted.

Well TPU, PLA, and PETG (idk about PVA) are the main plastics you can easily print without an enclosure. The hot end can get more than hot enough for ABS/ASA and the bed can get up to 100C, it will print as well as any other bedslinger with that kind of spec. Take a look at some YouTube videos of people printing ABS/ASA with a bedslinger open to the air.

Here's a few views of the CAD model that show you the internal structure.
I maybe should have made the sprue/runner larger for the highest point to allow air to exit on its own because the silicone was too thick for that to happen naturally, but I didn't want the trim-away spot to be bigger than it was. As it was, I just let the pour settle for ~20 minutes and injected more silicone through the hole for the lower sprue to force the air out.
You can also see the holes I included for four M5 screws to hold the whole thing together during curing, which resulted in only a very thin flashing layer which broke off easily. There's another M5 hole in the top which I used to push the two halves apart for demolding.

It's for passively stretching to restore foreskin function. If you look at the cutaway, you can see that the sleeve bulges inward around the top and bottom to grab the skin at either end while not contacting as much in between.

I just got a used prusa i3 from someone, and it seems to mostly work, but I'm getting a "MINTEMP BED FIXED" error any time I try to preheat or start a print. I looked up the error and it seems like it could be a number of things but most people say it was fixed by just replacing the thermistor.

Seems entirely plausible. Find where the bed thermistor is connected on the mainboard and measure across its terminals for resistance if you have a multimeter. While the machine is turned off. I believe it should be in the ballpark of 10kohms, if it's faulty it should measure really high or maybe really low. It could be that the thermistor wires are poorly plugged, crimped, or screwed down, or have corrosion or oxidisation between them, so definitely test it after removing it. Or that the wires between the plug and the thermistor sensor itself are damaged, for which I'd be examining the cables. But more likely the thermistor itself is dead. It could maybe also be something like a thermal runaway protection sensing, in which case the bed heating element may be damaged or improperly connected.

NTA I don't think it helps very much but you do can get a foreskin-shaped flap of flesh which under the circumstances, is about the best that can actually be done without something crazy like a foreskin transplant from 17 jewish babies with compatible genetics.

For PLA alone it’s not really a big deal. The main reasons for an enclosed printer are:

>better thermal insulation for ABS and even hotter filaments
>walls to keep fumes and noise out
Maybe if it gets well below 10C out there you might want to use an enclosed printer, but the basic ones just have you leave the door or lid open when printing PLA or they’ll get too hot inside anyhow. First of all, who said that any of my work was reasonable? Looking back, it was probably way to much work with way to many little details.
I'll try to put as much info into this one post as possible. The Insulation was mostly done for temperature reasons. Here is an example of the kind of insulation that I used:

Feel free to look for something cheaper, this is just the first one that I've found right now. I did not use any form of adhesive for the sides. I just unscrewed the printers side panels, cut the insulation to the right size and jammed the insulation in between the side panels and the frame of the printer (left pic). This was way more work than it sounds. If you cut it to the same size, the thickness of the insulation will bend the side panels slightly. Even after popping the bubbles between the frame and the panels. Especially on the long parts that are not supported by screws. I had to cut it to fit as tightly as possible with a pair of manicure scissors. It fits like a glove with just the tiniest amount of insulation around the screws. I had to pop all the bubbles that were not needed (like the ones beneath the fan in the left pic) with a needle. For the insulation on the bottom, the back wall and the top cover I used double sided mirror tape (brand on the left pic). It's strong and resists heat and moisture. You can see the tape in use in the right picture. I also jammed parts of it beneath the printed hinges for a tight fit.
All this shit took me way more time than I'd like to admit. I disassembled and assembled and disassembled and assembled this fucker so many times like you wouldn't believe.
As a bonus I added my test results. First the naked printer, second with half assed insulation and the last with my full insulation. For the tests the bed was the only heat source.

It was a bit of a mystery because everything was saying good, but it was underextruding to the point where it couldn't really print. Went down this whole rabbit hole of replacing shit(that wasn't broken lmao) and getting the same results. Perhaps the gantry is skewed (and the bed has been levelled to match), such that the bottom of the nozzle is not square to the bottom of the bed? This might especially be an issue if you've got a bedslinger with just one Z screw, if it's got dual Z then it might just be out of sync. Equivalently, the moving bed of a bedslinger might not be square to the gantry uprights. There's probably test prints for seeing how square your motion system is.

you can *probably* print with it if you do a single filament forward only print but if it breaks off in the tube or head it's a big pita. with filament prices where they are today you should probably just pitch that shit in the bin. I used to deal with this all the time because somehow my old delta would degrade the entire piece of PLA in the feed tube which turned spaghetti brittle for like a foot after not printing for a few days. my SOP became always unload when freshly done with a print and discard anything length of filament even mildly brittle- but even the brittle shit did print fine as long as it was forward like I said.

as far as lasting I've had printed PLA for 6 years that is just fine indoors. my outside PLA mailbox handle in direct sun crumbled after ~3 years and it got pulled at least once every day. I've got some other outside stuff in PLA that's in the shade and fine after a year but based on the mailbox pull that's no surprise, plus most of it isn't in direct sun every day (334 days per year).

Even an old fdm can do passable minis of your friends for a dnd or tabletop at 0.4. Ordered a 0.2 to try it out at least once before I let the ol chap rest. Late 2025+ FDMs are so much better though. Not great, not masterwork, but passable from half an arms length.

Sure you cant print 12 minis at a time but you dont have to waste hours processing them. Just plop the finished one off and press AGAIN.

my thought exactly, only all the 4 materials get roasted at the same time, and unless they do a slight retract on the other 3, there will be drag by the current filament creating low pressure and suction in the other 3 tubes. From the survey they are apparently also planning to release a 0.2 nozzle for it! Thats why I called it ClogX.

That either means leaving the majority of the melt zone full of filament as you retract less than a millimetre or two, or retracting the full ~40mm melt zone each colour change. Even if you retract that full 40mm, there's still going to be a significant amount of filament clinging to the walls of the melt zone, decomposing in the heat, and that huge retraction will make for a massive prime tower. And maybe the filament decomposing isn't an issue for one print, but imagine doing a 4 colour print once, then doing 20 hours of 3 colour prints, never changing the filament in that last filament path. It's going to get real bad real quick.

Oh though if this thing can mix filaments, it could still be really cool. Imagine mixing TPU and PETG for variable hardness. Maybe it would require some gyration of the nozzle (e.g. welding in circles) but it could be very cool.

ASA is similar to ABS in that regard. Best to print with some form of ventilation, I don’t really trust those activated carbon filters that come stock with printers. They always end up emitting ABS stench regardless. Print in a well ventilated area like a garage with doors open, or use a duct from the enclosure with fans pulling the fumes out a window.

Well the stock motor had a crunchy bearing (it was a warranty'd unit my coworker nabbed from a warehouse sale), so to get it up and running I bought a local 12V brushed motor. Turns out it had bushings instead of bearings, and the end-play was so much that I had to 3D print a bracket to hold a thrust bearing between the motor housing and the chuck/coupling. I don't know if it's because I've been running this 12V motor up to stupid RPMs with 24V, or if it's because of the continual preload I've been forcing on these bushings, but it's just been getting sloppier. Even with the ball bearings in the replacement motor, I'm not sure how much axial force a pair of itsy bitsy 1/8in ID bearings can handle, so I might still need to whip up some sort of thrust bearing bracket. Might have to get some pieces 3D printed out of metal from china, or perhaps attempt to machine them out of aluminium with this thing.

I am mildy annoyed and near the point of pointing Ghidra at their freaking software to get the two files (network interface) that they don't release "for security purposes" (so you can't actually compile it on anything else than Ubuntu and if you compile it yourself, no network features).. The hardware is fine, prints quick and all (aside from a bent PTFE tube at back but could fix that), 2h for a decent-quality and decent-sized print, 45 mins for a quality benchy, but damn, the Qidi software is an atrocrious abomination of corpo-slop.

Fusion is extremely complicated for a beginner. I watched hours of tutorials and tried it, but in the end went to FreeCAD because it was a little easier. Still hard though with 3D plane extrusions. The one thing you missed is the extra addition to the top circle, making it more complex.

Since learning freeCAD I've been using it to plan all kinds of projects. It helps me getting a better understanding of the dimensions that are involved and how to improve on the design before printing, sawing, drilling, milling or orderning stuff.
It is different, at least for me, from just picturing it in my head and it reduced the amount of real world trial and error.

I wouldn't consider multicolor prints on anything without multinozzle. However, that doesn't mean you can't just design the part to have multiple pieces.Those can be printed in different colors. Also it's a huge time waste.

As an example, I was working on a box with a little design on the outside. Little press in shapes that all print separately. I can print the entire box(this includes multiple plates in the sliver) that way in about 10 hours. If I printed those shapes in place on the box then JUST the main box is a 23 hour print on my x1c.

I’d say an AMS is more useful for storing filaments at the ready, just the convenience factor of being able to hit print without manually swapping filaments. But for anything other than unreinforced PLA or ABS/ASA, you’re not going to want to store them in the AMS long-term.

For Florida, I’d consider buying an AMS-HT or other filament drier instead of a multicolour unit. An X2D might be worth considering, can do two simultaneous colours or materials without purge waste, and has a chamber heater for more reliable ABS, PC, PA, etc. prints.

you can daisy chain the AMS for 8, 12 etc colors. you can do 6 color prints with filament swaps but only on the same level - so if santa's boots and belt are black, you can make his face peach by swapping out the black filament s.t. the slot prints peach in the layers between the chest and top for example. there is some kind of dual-role filament swap, you can use pauses or just do it full on manually. I haven't found it necessary except once, often 4 colors is more than enough and you can use non-AMS techniques - a 3 color body and a slotted bunny ears headband with 3 different colors, which is also stronger because the layer line direction. the big drawback is changing colors is very slow, it adds hours to a print- like 2h can become 11h with some color. on the other hand the better reason to get multi-material is not just color but using support material for near zero supports that come off like butter.

I don't believe anybody who actually got an AMS or any multi-material system has ever said "well that was stupid, I could have printed everything in beige and painted it" - those are only the bitter monofilament posters.

Had to replace the power supply fan inside the controller in my anet e12, I've replaced both of the chassis fans inside the controller already and the parts cooling fan and the heatsink fan for the heatend, the shit companu needs to include better fans. It had a 2 pin connector on the power supply board inside of the casing, but this fan inside the power supply was a 16 volt, 0.1amp fan measuring 60mm x 60 x 15mm thick. Hard to find 16v, so i bought a 12v noctua brand and used the spliter in the kit to power it, tapping into one of the lines feeding power from the supply to one of the chassis fans i had already replaced. So now the power supply is supplying it's own fan power. Elegant solution that saved me a 26 dollar fan replacement or a 42 dollar power supply replacement.

It’s not really necessary for modern printers, though it might be handy for understanding the printing properties of your printer with a given filament, or for tuning in filament profiles, especially for less common filaments. Like what kind of overhangs you can get away with, or how prone to stringing your filament is at a given temperature. This is for my 58L bulk storage tub. Ideally I only put filament in here after drying it. I’ve got some silica gel and some molecular sieves, but maybe I should go for activated alumina instead. The silica gel is good for bulk moisture adsorption but doesn’t get too low in humidity, while the molecular sieves are a pain to dry.

I bought a new pistol, ruger rxm, so I dusted off my printer and printed off some speed loaders. While I have the machine running printed, feet for ender for better cooling since it has a full size pc fan underneath and printed off a pi 5 case for the device that was sitting in my drawer for a year.

I could not find a 60 2aa battery holder but its ok since I found a 30 2aa holder thats around 60 grams with the settings im running and I have about 50-60 grams of pla left on the spool.

fuck yeah cunt, get the cyclone aluminium flyscreen if you can, makes it a bit harder to integrate into a print, but i find clamping it between 2 parts works great, probably overkill for a desiccant container, but it worked well for my carbon pellet exhaust screen.

The strands are apparently 0.25mm thick, if they’re overlapping each other then that’s potentially 0.5mm thick. But I can probably enable variable layer height to get that much, and just print through it as I’ve been doing with the tulle. Otherwise, the 70% openness and 1.44mm pore size seems pretty good. Wouldn’t want to go any larger, maybe some of the fractured desiccant beads will fall through it, but most should be fine.

I used a pla from a brand called overture. I bought it in 2024 and used 75% of it before putting it into storage bin with silica packets. It printed fine to me. The z banding that you see is actually reduced compared to what it was since I installed a backlash nut recently. I think my main threaded rod is bent just a little bit.

I have not used my printer in like a year, maybe more. I would smear elmers purple disappearing glue stick every time I would print not realizing the old residue is enough to hold onto fresh melted pla. I dont feel like cleaning my Springsteel print bed like I did with my old glass bed so I'll just let the prints rip up and wear down all the built up glue.

Yes, to cool the internals. I have printed gun receivers for Mac 11 and an fgc9 at 99% infill. It takes days for these parts to print.

So, the situation: I somehow found myself as the main 3D printing guy on the team. We have a FDM printer on site, but it's an expensive industrial printer for stuff like nylon and ultem, and we only occasionally need nylon. It's usually more trouble than it's worth, and really sucks at printing baisic stuff like PETG (heated chamber is too well insulated to hold ambient temperature, heated bed alone makes it too hot), which we kinda need for cheap prototypes, as well as PETG in particular for food safe prints (which adds a clean nozzle requirement, I ain't swapping that shit every time), so for the last couple months I've secretly respooled it onto little sample spools to sneak it out of the compound and printed the parts on my little farm of tired Enders. But that couldn't go on together.
So, I've raised the question of procuring a more baisic printer under the guise of "the big guy is fat and slow, we need something that can reliably get going in minutes and finish in single digit hours", and guess what, now I'm also tasked with picking the right one.
The problem is that I don't know shit about modern printers, Enders and other baisic oldschool stuff like KP3S just worked for me all those years. I don't even own a single printer on Klipper lol. What's hot nowadays in the budget sector? (I'm not fucking with Bambus)

What kind of budget are we talking? I’d go for a coreXY if you can, the format means less wear on the motion system. You could go for an open frame one, like a Centauri, otherwise I’d want to go for a printer with a proper vent to keep the chamber temp down. A vented enclosed printer should be better for dust ingress and noise, if those are issues. I’d also want to buy a printer that sells 1st party food safe (stainless?) nozzles. I’ve heard stories of brass nozzles leaching lead into prints, but I’ve also heard that’s bullshit.

All that said, a Snapmaker U1 might be nice if tool-changing is ever something worth considering. Or a Prusa Core One or XL if “not made in china” could be a selling point to your boss.

there are 3 things for foodsafe:
1. lead free nozzle
2. proper filament (PETG is not foodsafe as is is hydrophilic)
3. prints cannot have tiny gaps which are impossible to sanitize (this is a normal side effect of FDM)

I use PLA for food adjacent stuff a lot, but it's not really food safe. Personally if you're not doing Bambu I'd do snapmaker U1, as long as you're getting a printer it might as well be multi-material so you can also make nice signs and labels.

Nah, How To Cook That did an episode testing 3D prints, properly testing with Petri dishes. A scrub with warm soapy water sanitises a print with intact layer lines barely worse than it sanitises normal kitchen items. And I don’t see why PETG being hygroscopic makes it not good safe, considering PET is also hygroscopic. Lead in nozzles is something she didn’t test for, but other people have, and apparently it’s not a common problem. But I’d still recommend a stainless nozzle just to be sure. I’d also recommend a certified food safe filament, but I assumed he was already using that.

what the other guy said. abs is for stuff you need to hold up to heat or you want to smooth using a chemical vapor bath (acetone). quality minis, in my opinion, should be printed using SLA or other types of liquid chemicals that harden under uv light/laser. im not into mini's but printing in pla should be ok if you intend to sand/repaint.

i only print functional stuff at high infill percentages. cant really tell you what to do for toys besides making sure your printer is calibrated, printing environment is hot and controlled temp and you are using the correct nozzle size and material for your project. im sure there are tons of tutorials and tips on youtube for ABS, printing minis. reddit too. i have a 1kg spool of ABS, "peakface" brand, thats been in storage for years because ive never had a reason to print in it. and because its stinky and my printer is in a common areas room

Figured it out. I bought some Sunlu 250g reels that were too small, and I guess it fed too much into the AMS. Pulled it out and it worked fine. Printing out a adapter for the Sunlu now. I just randomly bought the Sunlu b/c it was on sale and would arrive the fastest. Is Sunlu a decent filament, or is this a $36 learning lesson?

I'm printing PETG with a 0.6mm nozzle, direct extruder. It's not oozing out of the nozzle nor bubbling and popping, as expected since I've been drying it at 60C for 5 days straight. But prints are still stringing. On the retraction tower, there are stringy artefacts going all the way up to the top, even when the top of the tower makes for 2mm of retraction. When doing a finer retraction tower, I get lots of normal stringing below 0.1mm or so, and 0.11mm is what I've set for a useful value for normal printing, but the persistant diminished stringing well above 0.11mm makes it seems like the stringing is caused by something other than retraction. Any clues?

Just saw a youtube video where a guy jb-welded some fine metal mesh on either end of aluminium tubing, making for a desiccant container that air can flow through, and is usable in an oven. But then someone in the comments mentioned tea strainers, from which I found seasoning mesh baskets for 8USD on alibay, pic related. Being able to open the vessel and spread the desiccant out on a tray would make them dry a lot faster, though I could also potentially use a fan and heating element to quickly blast hot air through such a container without needing to open it. And I could feasibly clamp one of these atop a fan inside a dry box just with elastic straps that hook onto the eyelets. I hear PU rubber bands/cords don't creep over time like latex or nitrile might. Or metal springs.

The only problem is the holes on the side, preventing me from stacking multiple containers and reducing the amount of desiccant that sees the full fan airflow. But that's pretty easy to fix with 3D printed couplers and something like paper or foil blocking the side holes from inside or from outside.

They make them in all sorts of sizes, I'm looking at ones in the ~7-9mm diameter range, since I'm using a 90mm PC fan.
I think it's worth the hassle if it means oven-proof containers.

If you're making packet sized dessicant you might as well use the packets. idk you do you but I thought the whole point of having reusable dessicant went hand in hand with needing large amounts. you could at least make them 50mm and put one in each spool hole.

also you can just buy a 120mm fan with a 120v plug which saves you needing a real PSU or going with USB which is failure prone.
