You can weld a vertical practice "tree" (tall hunk of pipe or other shape) then tack practice scrap to it to weld in different positions. Always keep some scrap to adjust your welder before welding your workpiece.Attention to detail yields satisfying welds. Being able to make things you could not before expands your fucking life.

You basically short the fucking thing through an electrode and watch the sparks fly. Fancier models will have high end features like a dial to select your amperage (picture related) instead of just a selection of terminals. Really high end models might have a cooling fan (optional).

MIG is ok for controlled conditions (indoor with no drafts) and has a low learning curve. FCAW is about as easy to learn, but if you use innershield wire then you can use it in most conditions and without the need for gas. Stick is more cost effective and versatile but has a higher learning curve.
