What happened to small simple homes? I'm doing a few things for my grandmother at her house and I'm just amazed at how simple everything is. It's a rectangle with a living room, a kitchen and a few bedrooms. Everything is easy to work on, there's very little wasted space, etc. It has a great big backyard too. I know this is /diy/ and I apologize for asking here, but have we lost the plot with new homes? Seems like the goal now is to build such a big house that you no longer have to see each other. Were people just happier with less?

Houses with complex roofs and lots of bits and piece sticking out look more impressive to normies so that's what's popular. It's mostly due to the homes of the wealthy being that way, though often as much for functional reasons as for impressing each other. Pic related might have 50% more usable floor space than the house you posted (or even less if the original house has depth) but most people are going to see pic related as being far more impressive. Even setting aside things like landscaping and general maintenance, complexity sells because it impresses. I love the simple layouts of older houses but they have a tendency to be in economically depressed area, which in current year also means high crime and "diversity". Blue collar working classes areas where risk is low if you don't go looking for trouble are mostly obsolete now.
