Sometimes the sink in the garage has a sewage smell coming up out of it, I though a P trap was supposed to stop that from happening but I am kind of ignorant, is there something really fucked up with this setup that you can see just from this?
>>
>>3007461
That's an S trap. Fine 99% of the time for over 100 years, but occasionally can get sucked dry if you have shit venting on the rest of the system.

So somewhere down the line in the connections there is either poor or not venting and that is causing water from this trap to just get sucked down instead of sitting still?

is there a simple way to diagnose such a thing? There is a really poorly DIY bathroom setup in this garage on a platform with the sink, toilet, shower, and washer all within 10ft of each other and the water heater

I'd say it's scum collecting in those accordion traps. You can just put a flashlight to it and see if there are clogs visible. Although I have no idea on pipe venting.
>>
>>3007466
If it was a mild little stink it would be one thing but it's sewage smell, the same smell you might whiff at the street sometimes, and when it comes through the stink hits the whole garage it is very easy to tell when it is or isn't happening rather than just something collecting
>>
>>3007461
>>3007463
first post is probably right.
it needs a vent.
you can cut that 90 off put a tee and stick an auto vent on a bit of pipe coming out the top of the tee to raise it up a bit
>>
>>3007474
When you say cut the 90 etc do you you mean replace this part so it looks has a port pointing upwards like a sideways T and install that on top?
>>
>>3007478
45 seconds in drawing app on my phone.

Does it make sense?
>>
>>3007480
I realizes I drew it as a P trap instead of an S trap like you have, but don't worry about that.
>>
>>3007478
>>3007480
heres how i would do it

u know this is probably why anon should have just asked AI desu

Yeah that is what I figured you meant, but since I am super ignorant when it comes to plumbing etc, is that autovent just goint to vent farts into the garage in the same way, just potentially less often or?
>>
>>3007486
na they are spring loaded with a seal, the point is that they will let the system vent without sucking the trap dry and also not letting shit stink through it cause that would defeat the purpose.
they can go to shit over time but its better than no vent or having to run a vent somewhere else.
>>
>>3007463
S traps don't work, period. Some retarded boomer came up with this shit and other dumb boomers copied it.
>>
>>3007483
seconding this, so many less seals that could go wrong
>>
>>3007535
Nice facts to back up your assertions there fella
>>
>>3007483
That doesn't really look up to code
>>
>>3007463
Either this, or the water is evaporating. How often do you use that sink and how hot does it get in your garage?
>>
>>3007535
>period
Much confidence. So wrong.
>>
>>3007535
You ok dude?
>>
you should also replace the accordion drain with straight pipe, its known to trap all sorts of shit

>is there a simple way to diagnose such a thing?
when you smell it unscrew a side of the s trap and see if the water level is low
>now you know.
how to fix it?
replace the 90 going to the p trap with a sant and top with an air admittance valve

those dude wipes are gonna clog your shitty diy drains too.

>>3007483
>>3007621
the only problem with this is the t fitting is incorrect
you want a sanitary t for drainage
>>
>>3007480
Wait, wouldn't you need the vent after the S trap, not before it? With this drawing you'd just have two air inlets on one side of the S trap to just siphon the water faster, right?
>>
>>3007663
yes his drawing is retarded, do the ai anons thing here >>3007483
but with these t's >>3007650
make sure you put it the right direction.
you need a 1 1/2" trap kit, a san t, a coupling, like 3ft of 1.5" abs, and an auto vent.
>>
>>3007461
that u trap is in the wrong place, no wonder your sink smells
>>
>>3007461
Wtf is that? Landlord special?
>>
>>3007461

Check if your cleanout (the place where all the pipes lead, I dunno if I called it correctly) doesn't have another hole at the bottom that lowers the water level and let the air enter. I'm having this shit rn but I'm a rentcuck so nothing I can(and will) do.
