show up, WANT to learn, and you will
in a few years you can do whatever you want with it
I recommend a year or two new construction then service until you feel confident to maxmimize learning potential
if you aren't a lazy sack of shit you'll get the job

I applied to a decent sized company that was working on a big project and needed more bodies.

Like I said, I found a company working on a big project that needed bodies and was willing to sift through them. I personally don't enjoy residential work, although it's good stuff to learn. Commercial and industrial are cooler, although less applicable to every day stuff. Solar teaches you nothing, my company exiles the bad apprentices to solar before laying them off at the end of a project.

So much this. There are so many people in the trades because they are simply unemployable anywhere else. Especially 'handymen'.
