no wood general?
i don't know why it did that. it was vertical in my computor
i experimented with the raw wood aesthetic lately. i think it's ok and rustic and stuff.
>>3010374>i don't know why it did that. it was vertical in my computorI can explain this. Phones and some digital cameras don't actually save images with rotation, they're always the same direction and then have a metadata tag telling whatever device you're viewing them on how to rotate it. 4chan strips all that metadata because it also sometimes contains GPS coordinates or owner info, which could be used for doxxing. The solution is to open the image in any kind of image editing program, rotate it however you want, and then save/export it as a new file.
>>3010373CNC router or you did these by hand?
I tried my hand at cabinetry today for the first time and made some drawers. I give the sides a sado at the rear to receive the back, and the front two dados to receive the sides. All sides have a dado at the inside that receives the bottom. Worked fine but I need to be very very precise with the spacing or it ends up tapered and doesn’t slide well in rails. Is there an easier way to do this? I’m looking for a simple design that can be done pretty fast and my only good tools are saw and router>>3010406Looks like this is the same Romanian (?) anon from a while back that got loads of experience and carves them by hand
>>3010411>Looks like this is the same Romanian (?) anon from a while back that got loads of experience and carves them by handIf it's done by hand, it is truly amazing and I am in awe. I wish I could do make such beautiful pieces. It reminds me of Baroque altar pieces.
>>3010373i was given a big pile of 3x10s by a friend because i said i wanted to build a shed in my yardthey are currently loaded on my trailer and the ends are chainsaw cut rough and all are 22 to 28 ft long so flipping then is a fucking painwhats the easiest way to cut them cleanly with only a garden variety skilsaw? they are 2-5/8 thick so it takes a cut from both sides
>>3010383is this a shitpost?
>>3010419zero clearance jig like pic rel, but shorter and make it an L or U-shape. Put some screws or nails through it with the tips protruding like 1/8” so that when you slap the jig down it down on the beam it wont move anywhere and you don’t need to clamp it, or use a speed clamp, this can be done upside down. If it’s a really big pile a bigger circular saw may be worth, $90 gets you something shitty that gets the job done probably
>>3010434>tracksaw memetheyre twisted old roof purlins with gashed edges and shitty spots from a torn down sawmill. so its nearly impossible to use a square to get lines that match on opposite sides so the 2 cuts are all fucked to each otherbut i figured it out. saw will cut 2 7/16 deep so i cut them 1/4 or so long with the chainsaw then cut on the line with the skilsaw and break the piece off. then zip the little uncut lip off with a flush trim which takes less time than writing this out and i called the local hockshop but they didnt have a beam saw currently in stock so ill keep niggering along
>>3010383I don't hate this for the right picture but that's not the right picture.
Wow, I am really kicking myself for not learning more skills. To explain, I recently bought a new TV for a move and didn't give the stand much thought. Figured it'd be easy to find one I wanted. I couldn't have possibly been more wrong. Every SINGLE stand, it seems, has so many unnecessary features. All have at least one thing I don't want or need. It's gotten to the point where I'm questioning whether or not what I'm asking for is as simple as I figured it would be. Here is what I'm looking for:>Dimensions: 72 inches wide x 20 inches high x 20 inches deep>Not picky about the species of wood, so long as it's a sturdy hardwood>No doors, no drawers, no back panel (an "open" design)>One shelf, centered halfway up the total height>Some sort of support between the shelf and the top is okay if necessary, just so long as it's not directly in the center (needs to accommodate for an open space in the shelf at least 36 inches wide)>The top of the bench needs to be able to support 90 pounds>Stained, sealedEssentially an open rectangle with no bells or whistles. This is apparently an extremely tall order. I have a few questions for anyone smarter than I:How does one determine the load bearing strength of a piece of furniture in a situation like this? What a rough ballpark estimate of what I'd be looking at for total cost to pay someone to build this? How difficult would this be for the average carpenter/woodworker?Assuming no other work, how long would a job like this take?
>>3010441Did you ever take a statics or strengths of materials course? Pretty easy to figure out the load and there are numbers out there for the yield strength of different lumber species. The simple answer is that fence pickets or deck planks are strong enough for what you want so long as you don't have too big of span.
>>3010447Never really took any courses that would have been practical. Hindsight is 20/20. The span would be six feet, 72 inches. I'm assuming material thickness plays a part in this calculation? I will do some research on strengths. Thanks for the response.
>>3010450Depending on thickness of the material, a 6 foot span is doable. If you had a support in the middle(3 foot span), almost anything would work.
>>3010441Use the sagulatorNot so difficult, but they’ll charge big time for a ‘custom center piece’. Anyone can make an open rectangle, but a good woodworker may spend hours to make sure it won’t deform. If you want the top and bottom both be a single slab you’re looking at a few hundreds per slab, if it can be planks then $200 in wood maybe. Add 8-10 hours and finishing for a very basic design and youre anywhere between $1-2 thousand minimum
>>3010451>>3010477Thanks, I checked the Sagulator and it looks like it'd be fine with 1" boards. Is there any benefit aside from asthetics for it to be one single plank for top/shelf/bottom? More sturdy? I am definitely in favor of using multiple boards to lower the cost so long as the structural integrity isn't compromised.
why are people on r/cabinetry claiming a third party cnc shop eats into profits if cnc automation basically makes it high volume low margin shouldn't they be able to give you a good rate that place full of cnc dealers or something
>>3010406it's with hand held router
>>3010373
>>3010508How did you do the concave and convex features of the grapes and leaves in >>3010373 ? It's great work.
>>3010498Youre kinda self answering it, at lower volumes they tend to quote very high prices because they have plenty bigger clients that place $10k+ orders. They can overprice the $1k order clients because they don’t really need those. Most here are pretty honest about it though
>>3010491multiple boards (I meant as in to reach 20” depth) isnt worse and tends to warp less if glued up correctly. If you have two layers of 1” with some supports that should do fine, you might want to add some racking resistance because 1” corner joints arent exactly stiff by themselves, but some metal L brackets at the rear get you a long way
>>3010517why would my volume be low i'm also a shop (manual) isn't it their job to seek high volume it's not a finished product if my shop gets a cnc then i'm doomed to chasing the dragon as well competing with them can't they be nice
Complete beginner here bros, anyone got some nice and easy designs to help me get started on carving?
>>3010537I don’t know what kind of shop you run ofc, you can always request a quoteI’m a small shop and when I ask them for quotes for like $1-2k jobs they basically say it will only be cheap if I order in the 10k+ range. Sure they can do it cheaper than you with your own CNC, but they have to handle the order, make a profit, ship it, etc
I figured out I suck at workholding. I have a sturdy bench with overhang but I just can’t nicely hold shit on the top. Would you recommend diy’ing MFT holes in it? Or rather put some slide channels
7" circular saws so big and scary
>>3010570That's not big though You haven't lived until you have handled a big circular saw with a huge kick when you start it
>>3010571it does have a kick though even trips the circuit breakers maybe brushless ones are lighter
>>3010373How can someone retarded like me learn to do this type of cool shit?
>>3010514with chisels >>3010541start with Celtic knot, the simplest tutorial on youtube you can find >>3010595I'm not that smart either, I'm a brokey who lives with parents. you need autistic perseverance that pushes you to do it even when you see no progress. the first year sucked, it took a couple of years to get the skill. But I hated having a job so much that I had no choice then to double down and go back to the work bench despite the frustration. A couple of times I slammed the chisels on the floor and nearly injured myself. you have to grind grind grind, there is no quick 5 step trick.
>month 4 of woodworking>still haven't made anything
>>3010693My dream is to make beautiful crucifixes. There is so much ugly art in churches and the only way I can see to fix it is by doing it myself.
>>3010537They make commissions on punctuation omission.
how do you get 1" stock
>>3010788ask for 5 quarters
>>3010699All you need is two sticks bro
>>3010570We won't use anything less than 9" and all the guards are permanently shimmed so the work gets done quicker.
>>3010477Made a post in a local group and got five recommendations, three of which were for the same guy. Reached out and he worked up a quote. $620 and change, not bad. Made from oak, stained, and a semi-gloss finish. Includes delivery.
done! waxed and painted. is the thread dead?
>>3011265>>3011266Beautiful rendition of the annunciation! Was this commissioned for a particular person or you just made it?
>>3011286thank you! it is for a church.
>>3011618They are a very lucky church to have you making such beautiful art. If you have anything else I'd love to see it.

>>3010373I've always been somewhat interested in learning but have never had space to work or keep tools.I've dreamed of making a mimic that opens it's eyes and extends it's teeth as the chest is opened but is indistinguishable from a normal wooden chest when closed.
