Old well made* tool thread. Just picked up this antique today. Anyone else acquire some quality well made tools recently? Got a project in mind, filling in a gap in your capabilities, or do you just like collecting old stuff?*American, Canadian, European tools. Chinesium dogshit and other tools of similar origin need not apply.
I don't live in the West. Where do I buy western tools? Companies like Hilti only sell to high profile construction companies, not DIY homeowners like me.
>>3011017wtf op. you bought a USED big ass metal dildo?
>>3011017I use these at work, we needed some parts to repair ours, buying the parts new is cost prohibitive so I started looking for broken floor staplers, I keep finding them in lots for around $40-$50 each including shipping, I now have 8. we also go through new 15ga nailers because they are all plastic so I have doing the same thing with older Senco and Hatachi 15ga.
>>3011082also new skillsaws suck
>>3011083WTF is wrong with them?Last 3 biggish Union contractors I've worked for supposedly have tons of older Skill Saws rotting in storage but never bring them out, but will have one of their idiots by a brand new Makita, which is exact opposite of what I need for cutting stainless.
>>3011113Bosh purchased Skil and moved production to China, quality has suffered and they don't fill the gearbox with oil, our backup saw is a China made Skilsaw the run out on the blade adapter is really bad and it only had a tablespoon of oil in the gearbox. all our USA made Skilsaws are about 30 years old, they look like hell but perform perfectly.
>>3011017Its not the 90s anymore, there isnt a cheap and ample supply of antique tools like there used to be. The stuff that is on the market has had 30 more years of age and use on them, they arent cheap anymore.A large portion of them need restoration jobs (or have already been haphazardly "restored" with chinese stuff)Big expensive repairs like motors are becoming very common. Motor Varnish was never meant to last 80+ years. Switches, wiring, bakelite parts, everything becomes suspect. If scouring marketplace then breaking down and restoring tools is your hobby, have fun. Just understand youve missed the boat by 30 years.
>>3011116Bosch bought them in the 90's. Their sale to the Chinese company Chervon in '16 that killed them.>>3011118I flip tools on the side. It is area dependent. I go out to a farming communities and find stuff like this in barns and local auctions. I'm west coast. North east or mid west? Tons of this stuff. I got paid to 'clean out' a facility in Illinois and 'take everything to the dump' some years ago and made a fucking mint restoring and flipping the tools. If you are in the south hand tools are more common. I see old wooden bodied Stanley planes stacked up like cordwood in antique stores down there all the time. If they aren't worm eaten or complete basket cases I buy them and flip them on eBay. In my experience, cities are cleaned out. You want to be out of the population centers and especially be in areas that are former manufacturing hubs.Picture related, from google. To most people that is garbage to haul away. Those are old Rockwell/Delta in a gang setup. I could totally fix those. A six head gang drill press? I could sell the heads as parts, which would net the most money, or sell the whole unit to someone on VintageMachinery.org or OWWM.org. If I parted it out I would keep the table. Those things are cool as shit.>Its not the 90s anymore, there isnt a cheap and ample supply of antique tools like there used to be. Then how did I buy that drill press? You think I spent a mint on it?
>>3011125>RustRust is easy. Only pussies can't clean up rust. Wire wheel if you are cheap, Evaporust if you are lazy.>Bakelite partsOh no, the fucking knobs on the capstan wheel are cracked! If only they still made them! They do. Phenolic knobs are easy to find. Nothing else is plastic on it. Hell, the Delta? Zero plastic outside of the insulation on the wires. Which someone else already rewired.>SwitchesThe old art deco switches are cool but I have seen just as many wired up to a standard light switch. If I wanted to get fancy I could use a motor control switch with a big STOP button on it. They are common and wiring stuff ain't hard.>WiringYou mean the single power cord that runs directly to the motor and is just right there? Gee, however will I replace that! The instructions on how to wire the motor are ON THE MOTOR. You cut the end off a computer power cord you can find for a dollar at a thrift store and wire it up. Done.>The motors!Yeah, rewinding motors is ass. You know what is free? Old treadmills. You know what they have? Giant-ass DC motors with speed control boards. You know a perfect upgrade for a drill press or lathe? A giant DC motor with speed control board. Or I can get a Dayton fractional horsepower motor for under a hundred bucks used. They used to sell these machines without motors. Power 'standards' in the USA used to be all over the place so plenty of people supplied their own motors. People you to salvage them. You washing machine tub developed a hole? Save the motor and put it in a drill press! I've seen that more than once.
>>3011125>Bosch bought them in the 90's. Their sale to the Chinese company Chervon in '16 that killed them.our Skillsaw that was manufactured when Skil was owned by Bosh says made in China
>>3011127I stand corrected. I didn't know they had already been offshored by that point.
>>3011130looks like Bosh acquired the name in 97 and couldn't wait to gut the American manufacturing sector. Bostitch went through the same thing but as far as I can tell the the body castings for the Bostitch floor staplers have improved in quality and all the internal parts are the same, but I haven't seen one since DeWalt has owned Bostitch, I'm pretty sure I have one coming in the last lot of staplers I purchased, so we'll see.
>i flip toolsthe lowest form of human behavior be gone parasite
>>3011125These are things that used to be given away by your relatives, neighbors, coworkers, at every single garage sale, every single thrift shop, sitting on the side of the road. Now here you are having to scour barns and fighting idiots at auctions. You somehow know what regions have what tools, you are having to do industrial cleanup work to get them.Hilarious Thanks for confirming to everyone its literally a fulltime job to acquire this shit anymore. You dont actually build anything, you blow all your free time buying shit. lul
>>3011139Hey now, hes a restorer. That Delta drill press he has is for sale. Its got a brand new salvaged treadmill motor with a spanking new chopped up extension cord with a nifty new light switch to power it all on!He even rattlecanned it for you!He knows what hes got!
>>3011017Btw, anyone knows anything about these driller adapters:AEG SB 717 grinding wheel (45 € negotiable)AEG STS 707 reciprocating saw (20 €)Can't find anything in them; not quite sure if/how they fit any driller chuck/whv.Both look brand new.Would these be worth it at all? Looks to me they're way overpriced, given prices of brand new modern tools.
>>3011180
>>3011180Just buy a bench grinder and a jigsaw on their own.Literally no reason to own either of those things.
>>3011180>>3011181>powerdrill abuseI have an almost complete set of those but from Bosch. With a small table saw with the tilted circular saw (banned nowadays). But yeah, those are rubbish essentially. You will need a particular AEG power drill of that vintage that has the option to attach these. The regular bit chuck gets removed and some kind of hexagonal nut attached that drives the attached tool. The prices you have there are delusional. Those are worth like 5-10€ to someone who wants them (which is nobody). I got mine on the fleamarket once, 10€ for a whole set of different ones.
>>3011142Lol you sound mad bro. I fall into deals all the time. People practically give me stuff just to get rid of it. Get off your phone and look around a bit sometime and maybe you can stumble into some good deals too. Look up local online auction companies or visit the local used machinery dealer from time to time. Its not as hard as you're making it out to be.
>>3011182Yeah, my thoughts >>3011187>ProprietaryThat was what I feared>Way overpricedPeople here are retarded; they watch us cable picker tv shows, and think any old crap is "antique" gold; it's ridiculous.
>>3011188>Its not as hard as you're making it out to be.Nobody said it was "hard". Its way too time consuming and its not actually cheap. The only reason the "buy old" meme started was because there was no time investment and it was dirt cheap. Thats not the case anymore. Ive bought and sold hundreds of machines back when it was cheap and easy. I also own brand new chinese machine tools in my shop. The quality difference isnt as stark as boomers pretend it is. Ill take my Laguna drill press over a vintage Delta any day of the week. When you hear people bragging about flipping shit like delta drill presses, you know they dont actually build shit.Different strokes, some people like fabricating stuff. Some people like buying and selling shit instead
>>3011191>People here are retarded; they watch us cable picker tv shows, and think any old crap is "antique" gold; it's ridiculous.Thats literally OP
looks like we got a bunch of jealous poor fags that can't afford 30 year old American made tools in this thread.
>301121won>alienating his customer base while gloating over profiteering on themyou must be of the (((merchant class)))plenty of ye olde machinery love here but none for scum of the earth resellers
>>3011211Your reading comprehension is extremely poor.
Here's my set of NSK mics, lucky find at a local used tool store. I don't know the exact year but the manuals look 1960s to me. I paid $100 last year and the 3" and 4" mics and the standards still had cosmoline on them when I got the set. A new set of Mitytoyos is about $600 and these run circles around anything you can get for less than that.
>>3011017My grandfather had a bunch of used and rusty Gränsfors Bruk axes and a draw knife but I have all ne tool to do that shit. Should I keep them as decoration or sell them I imagine 100yo GB items would probably be worth a lot to the right collector
>>3011191>ProprietaryYeah, but any older AEG power drill should work. I saw online that those don't need an additional nut to connect (like Bosch). But honestly those systems aren't worth it. Any new Chinese circular saw you get for cheap today is better than these unwieldy contraptions with a power drill on it. It's from a time when average Joe took out a small loan to buy his electric drill.
>>3011254I don't have anything AEG, though, old or new.I have picrel and the respective driller, though.Reciprocating saws and grinding wheels go for as low as those adapters or less (locally, not even from China).
>>3011017Picked up a 10 inch Baldor grinder a couple of years ago. Hooked it up to a VFD so it's adjustable speed and reversible. Guy used it in a woodshop for shaping armrests and things like that. It was in more or less mint condition. 400 for a tool with a mint condition pedestal that retails for upwards of 3 grand for just the grinder. Are these worth 3 grand? Fuck no. You can buy an 800 dollar Jet that's 95% as good. Is it worth 400 plus an extra 150 for a VFD? Most definitely. I can brace myself and lean on it hard enough that the wheels gunk up and it barely even registers the load. I'm young and it'll probably be something I can give to the grandkids I don't even have.
>>3011311Example I found of a modern version for sale.
>excellent condition
>>3011327I will never buy a used air compressor unless it's a screw compressor with a service log. So many retards that never drain their tanks turning them into bombs. So many people never changing the oil in the pumps.
>>3011314you can almost buy a SkilSaw for that.
>>3011328I'll probably never buy a new compressor ever again... Used compressors are pennies on the dollar and there's really not much to them.
>>3011328>turning them into bombsme over here welding up pinhoes in the lace doilie bottom of my 250 gal compressor thats older than the average us senator
>>3011376Oh noes, we're all gonna die!
