15-year old Samsung shitbox
Leaking from the underside of the evaporator cover
First search result says clogged/iced drain
Drain had zero build-up of ice, poured water into it quickly and it never pooled
Cleaned the brittle drain hose, nothing was in it

Any ideas?

Perhaps the evaporator fan needs to be checked
Perhaps the foam that seals the cover has changed shape over the years and need replacing

It the evap coil is getting cold and you don't hear the fan running then it's probably the fan. Does the light turn off when you press the door switch?

Door switch is hidden. Hoping it was magnetic, I ran a magnet around where the gasket sits and could not locate a switch. Maybe it's capacitive

If I hold the door ~2 inches from closed, I can see the light turn off. Should I hold it like that and expect to hear a fan?

If the switch is working then the fan should come on during the cooling cycle. If it isn't working the evap coil just freezes the bottom of the freezer including the drain. Then the defrost cycle runs and makes a puddle.

I have this exact fridge.
I got rid if it a few years ago.
It started leaking yellowish/red water into the trays, i took apart the back inside right below the fins and the drain area was rusting right through because they were too cheap to make it out of something that didn’t rust. It was clearly planned obsolescence.
I have seen units that used foil tape or stainless in the drain area, so maybe a lawsuit forced the change.
That went on for a few years, then the freezer got warm and I determined that it leaked all the coolant. I tried to refill it with a kit, but it’s banned now, so it was insanely expensive. Scam #2 - keep changing the refrigerants every 10 years.
Anyway, I had to get a new unit, and got the cheapest midea and it’s been great.

… continued
Oh, the other problem is the drain (the one with the rusty metal plate around it) was clogged with ice (causing the overflow into and under the crisper drawers) so you take hot water and a long thin tube and squirt it down there until it’s unclogged. This takes a while.
There is a grey tray on the bottom of the fridge where it drains to, don’t overflow it…. It just evaporates… it’s next to the fan.
Once it starts clogging with ice it just keeps doing it, so you have to keep doing it every few months after it destroys a few $100 worth of groceries you’ll probably want to move on, fridge-wise.

Legitimately sorry to hear how awfully your fridge failed, I appreciate the tale

I am by no means defending this shitty fridge, but when I took mine apart, I didn't detect even a "normal" amount of rust
One screw was covered with some black gritty layer, probably rust, but there was none on the backplate or in the trough near the drain. The only hint of ice was near that fucked up screw, not a hint of frost anywhere on the radiator or drain.

Before dropping money on a new unit, wondering if there's some kind bandage fix, like reshaping the scoop at the bottom of the metal on the backside of the evaporator cover. Maybe it's on some foam that's shrank over 15 years.
Maybe I try to seal the perimeter of the cover to the back of the fridge with silicone or something

I was unable to fix mine once it started.
I did hear it “pop” a couple of times, when I opened the back, the ice had gotten so large that it cracked the foam surrounding the coil. I never thought the bottom of the foam needed to form a “seal” against the water coming into the fridge, that may be the case though. I guess you could try building a dam around the drain groove in the back with aluminum duct tape or something.
I ended up raising everything off the bottom of the drawers (I used some plastic containers and put a rigid sink mat over them—fit perfectly) and checking it every day. Did that for over a year.
The ice clog comes and goes. My guess is by the time you checked it, it had already cleared normally…. The water accumulates pretty slowly and just sits there, so the clog may have been gone for days while the water just sits there.
Other things that helped was ensuring the whole back area of the fridge shelves was clear of anything that might interrupt airflow.

time for a new one
