Why haven't you started your own business in the trades yet?I keep hearing from older guys that are still doing grunt work in their 40s that I should start my own business and start making money for myself, but I asked them why they didn't when they were my age and they didnt really have an answer. It shouldn't theoretically be hard right /diy/? All you need is a brand name, a truck/van (with a wrap, but optional), some tools and a working phone that you answer consistently. Am I missing something here? I mean assuming you already have a decent bit of experience in a trade like plumbing, drywall or flooring, you can buy your materials from Home Depot, quote things yourself and just focus on smaller jobs.
>Am I missing something here?Probably a few things, liability insurance, government red tape if you hire a single kid helper and don't underestimate dealing with terrible customers and the toll it can take. Probably getting worse in that regard. You also have to make money, most go out of biz after a year, you need to be a little more ruthless than usual. You might even need to rub out some competition or at least gather intel...oh, and looooong hours unless you are very disciplined.Prob depends if you are cut out for it.
you know how to do the job, start to finish? you know how to price to make money? You can get jobs that pay well enough that you actually make money on them?
>>3013450>Why haven't you started your own business in the trades yet?The jobs that only need one guy and a van are usually home repair. Home owners are primarily boomers who bought the house for $25k and a firm handshake. Explaining to them that you want more than the amount of money to buy a cheeseburger to completely rewire their house blows their mind. They want to pay with "exposure" or "the chance to help out the elderly". Neither are accepted for rent payments or traded for gasoline. This is why it's mostly boomers telling you to get in the business of getting ripped off. After the day of the pillow, single vehicle tradesmen should return as a thing. But by then, you won't be asking here, it will be an obvious moneymaker.
>>3013455they also want to chat way too much since they have unlimited time in the day
Self employed taxes are a cunt and I can't handle the tard wrangling that comes with running a proper company. I'm much happier just being the guy the bossman sends in when he wants a job done properly.
>>3013450I do aide jobs sometikes and its pretty good. And If I wanted to i could. I just dont wanna. I dont wanna schedule things and make promises that I worry about keeping and buying supplies and thinking about if im charging the right amount and trying to find jobs. Id rather just have someone tell me where to go and what to do and everything else is their problem.
>>3013450Start with side gigs. If you can make 3x your normal income every single day, then cross over.
>Replace a GFCI outlet.>House burns down a month later.>Homeowners insurance tries to sue you because you were the last tradie there.>It definitely wasn't the two chineseium scooters plugged into the outlet.Look up how much your business insurance is going to cost and then find out why I charge an hourly rate of $300.
me and everybody i know running a sub $1M/yr gross income business just raw dogs w/o insurancelet em fight me for all of my bustedass old junk i basically live 1 step above homeless poverty already
Because wage theft, theft and beating is common among blue collar job here.
>>3013489What do you do to charge 300 an hour and how much of that roughly goes to insurance?
what are you asking 4chan niggers for
>>3013450Because it means spending more of your time and energy on marketing, customer service, sales, accounting, etc. than you do on your actual trade. Most people don't get into trades for that shit.
>>3013450>I asked them why they didn't when they were my age and they didnt really have an answer. They're expressing their regret that they didn't and are hoping that they can live vicariously through you if you succeed.People don't strike out on their own because they're too comfortable on the reservation. You get your 40 hours a week and a paycheck. Going it alone means a lot more mental work and potentially less money making work.
