Is it advisable to buy slim fit trousers a size larger hoping to fit more like a regular fit? I have genetically larger calves than the average person and slim fits make me feel like I'm wearing a corset.
Most stores focus on slim fits so it's difficult to find clothes I like.

No. Sizing up a little on millennial tapered gay pants won't do anything. They're designed to be tight and gay near the calves and ankles. Just buy proper straight or relaxed fit pants. If you can't find them in your local stores then order them off the internet.

I tried straight once but I didn't like how square they looked. Made me feel kind of goofy. Don't know about relaxed.

Because you're not used to wearing non-slim pants. You won't look goofy. All the kids and their grandmas are wearing straight leg pants now. It'll be fine. They're also much more comfortable and breathable than slim pants.

Why are you trying to sabotage him?

No.
Spend further time shopping. Shop for a better fit that YOU want. Yes, that means entering a clothing store, selecting multiple styles of pants from many brands, trying them on in the fitting room, and reaching conclusions about what "feels best" while sitting, standing and walking.
Purchase what you can afford.

What if I use a belt?

Then the fabric will bunch up behind the belt. After a while the excess fabric will slip down at the buckle area and it'll look like you have a constant boner.
