is it worth paying hundreds of dollars for a pair of sunglasses from a high end brand? on one hand i feel stupid paying that much for a piece of plastic and glass, otoh, does that really matter if i'm getting years of use out of them?
>>
>>18725032
>plastic and glass
plastic and plastic you mean
>>
I bought Ray Ban's over 10 years ago that are still just fine today and look new. I've dropped them many times.
What do you think? Do you spring for quality that will last or some trash that's gonna break?
>>
>>18725032
>is it worth paying hundreds of dollars for a pair of sunglasses from a high end brand?
If it's Luxoticca trash, no.

In general, though, if you can take care of things, then a pricey purchase can be fine. If you lose or destroy your sunglasses every summer, don't bother buying anything nice.
>>
>>18725032
Depends on a lot of factors. As for OTS shades, I bought 714s because the folding mechanism actually serves a purpose for me. If I were to by non folding shades I would always by individual Non branded frames (maybe some genuine turtoise shell from a vintage frame dealer) and have high end glass installed in a shop. Might be on the expensive side of things but I prefer having few things that I look after.
Generally speaking, don’t by branded plastic trash, its a waste of money.

Luxury can be good, but the key is seeing and feeling them in person. A lot of "luxury" items are equivalent to cheap quality and design, they just have a logo on them. They are basically just gas station glasses with a logo, they have no weight, no workmanship.
>>
>>18725832
how is a 20 dollar pair of sunglasses a waste of money if they serve their purpose?
>>
>>18726430
If they have bad lenses then they actually work against their purpose by damaging your eyes instead of protecting the from the sun.
>>
shill me a brand with good lenses
>>
>>18726578
Vuarnet and Maui Jim are supposed to have decent lenses.

is this still relevant? I haven't heard it in 20 years, chinkshit has improved a lot since then
>>
>>18726600
>is this still relevant? I haven't heard it in 20 years, chinkshit has improved a lot since then
Oh, it's still very much relevant. Reputable brands that manufacture in China might have proper UV400 protection. The Chinese are certainly capable of manufacturing good lenses. But the 20 dollar shitters are made by cutting costs everywhere. If they say UV400 to get additional sales, they aren't worried that someone from the other side of the planet is going to sue them if the lens is just brown-tinted plastic.

>get uv flashlight with wavelength within uv400 sepctrum
>shine it at front of lens
>put bank note behind
>if bank note doesn't shine, uv blocking works

A 400nm flashlight obv doesn't test the whole spectrum, but is good enough for me. Polycarbonate naturally blocks UV, you don't need some Super Secret Lab Coating from Luxottica. I'd be more worried when buying expensive crystal lenses, since *they* need special UV treatment.
>>
>>18726430
You were missing the BRANDED part. If its plastic only, you are basically only paying markup for the brand which is dumb. If you want mineral lenses for whatever reason, you need to buy high quality. I prefer mineral for optical quality, hence I need to buy expensive lenses.
>>
>>18726431
>he thinks that your eyes need to be "protected from the sun"
there really is no bigger sign that a person is a complete fucking retard than hearing someone talk about sunlight like it's some harmful thing to be avoided at all costs
you're a fucking idiot
>>
>>18726422
>>18725032
>>18725083
I'd say that you either buy gas station disposable cheapies that you lose under the car seat every summer or you spring for non-luxottica luxury that's not made in some shithole. Everything in-between these two tiers is a more of a waste of money being the worst of both worlds. I for one have a pair of Matsuda, but I realized I don't dress cool enough in order to style them so they sit in a drawer as a costly mistake. And now that I've become older and fatter I've basically missed the window entirely. Boomer gas station cheapies it is for me then kek

So buying expensive sunglasses is actually bad for you?
You're not just poor and unfashionable, you're making a conscious health choice to buy gas station sunglasses?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys also post in the watch threads?
>>
>>18727401
Note that the first two studies are likely referring to exposure to sun in general, which isn't really a sunglass issue. In fact if you're wearing sunglasses you're already being exposed to the sun.

In the last study, it says that exposure to certain forms of red light are shown to help people over 40. It doesn't say how much exposure, what specific type of red light, or how much of this red light you would be normally getting when outside, with or without sunglasses. Hope this helps.
>>
>>18727401
>The mortality rate amongst avoiders of sun exposure was approximately twofold higher compared with the highest sun exposure group
>The results of this study provide observational evidence that avoiding sun exposure is a risk factor for all-cause mortality
Incredible, there were no other risk factors amongst those who avoided going outside

They gobble up legacy brands, shutter the old factories and move production into consolidated facilities, raise the prices, lower the quality. Since they control the distribution channels too, they effectively act like a cartel.

I like my prescription sunglasses, they look like mirrored aviators. I wonder if you sightfags would be able to get them without needing vision correction? I was able to pick out the exact mirror color and lens tint from their lookbooks and if I only mildly damage them the optometrist will fix them up for free.

>Luxoticca bad
back to plebbit with this meme. every industry is like this, there's mass consolidation across everything, from clothing to sunglasses to power tools. if you're seeing something at a story, it's a brand that contracts out their manufacturing (to china most likely). doesn't mater if it's rayban sunglasses or milwaukee power tools. go ahead and suggest an alternative to luxoticca that uses glass lenses and acetate frames, not plastic (youn can't). also every large company, like luxottica, makes money from high volume and tiny margins, which is why alternatives are either cheap plastic junk or high priced (low volume, high margin) niche products.
>>
>>18736014
>alternative to luxoticca that uses glass lenses and acetate frames
Matsuda, though you can just get glass frames made and put in if you want. I actually don't know any brands that ship with glass in them because most people seem to prefer plastic.
>>
why do you want glass frames?
>>
>>18736271
>expensive sunglasses :|
>expensive sunglasses, from japan :o
way more expensive than luxoticca, proved my point about low volume and high margin niche brands.
>>
>>18736014
>>>> luxottica, makes money from high volume and tiny margins
>EssilorLuxottica
>Revenue € 28.491 billion
>Net income €2.443 billion
Does 10% ROI sound tiny to you?
>>
>>18736358
You seem to have a negative opinion of Matsuda. Could you explain to me why you think Matsuda glasses are bad?
>>
>>18735715
Brother when glasses block part of visible light but not uv, your pupil dilates more than it should for the uv and thus you lose light receptors and damage your vision, test them fake ass glasses with a uv light or become blind i guess
>>
>>18736686
They're not bad. They're just over-priced; however, for some reason, everyone just accepts the price while similarly priced, similar quality, glasses made by Luxottica are shit on.
>>
>>18736924
I don't really feel they're similar quality to Luxottica though. Like I've been to these stores, I've inspected and picked up Gucci, LV, Prada, etc. The workmanship and heft is very obviously different in my opinion. That's why I'm here asking if I'm missing something. Luxottica glasses literally feel like gas station glasses to me, there is basically no difference in quality.
>>
>>18725776
>If it's Luxoticca trash, no
DUDE
Luxottica BAD lmao
>>
>>18726578
Maui Jim has ugly designs but their lenses are some of the best in the industry
>>
>>18728343
>lower the quality
I see this meme repeated all the time on Reddit. Everyone seems to have their anecdotal evidence that Luxottica stuff is shit and disintegrates on you and explodes and kills your family
I've got loads of Ray Bans, some almost 20 years old. Every single pair holds up years later. I've only ever replaced the lenses on a few pairs that were too scratched from back when I used to take less care of my things
I own some Persols too, both sunglasses and my eyeglasses are Persol. All are excellent except one pair I bought on eBay that had a lose hinge. Is it because it's an eBay pair? Perhaps, perhaps not.
I have two pairs of Oakleys and they're good too, but I do think Oakley is overpriced for injected nylon frames. But quality wise they're fine
Between me and my wife, we have I believe 12 or so pairs of Luxottica brands. Only that one pair of Persols with a lose hinge has a quality defect. Everything else has lasted for years just fine
>>
>>18728331
>seasonal item
The sun shines year round. I need sunglasses even more in the winter because the sun light reflecting off the snow can be blinding.
>>
>>18736994
This. I wear sunglasses just about every day of the year.
>>
>>18736397
ok so it's 10%, which is meaningless without showing me a comparable company (non luxottica glasses company).

>>18736686
it's not negative, they seem nice, but they're niche and more expensive than rayban.

I'm waiting for someone to suggest sunglasses half the cost of raybans that have acetate frames and glass lenses. If luxottica is as bad as plebbitors claim, then there's a business opportunity that apparently no one has filled in decades???
