Lighters can be a cool (and somewhat practical) accessory too. Anyone carry anything beyond a standard Bic?

Pic related, it’s my “going out” lighter
>>
>>18730209
Nobody gives a shit about what lighter you have, you might get a comment if you’re lucky “cool lighter dude” but that’s about it. Same with cigarette cases. Trying to start a conversation about any of those immediately comes off as try hard and desperate.
>>
>>18730209
I still have a small collection of old Dunhill and S.T. Dupont lighters but I don't actually cary them anymore.
As cool as they are, I don't smoke and I don't even know anyone who smokes. The smoking rate in the US is below ten percent and it's under four percent among young people. Even those younger people who do smoke live in comparatively rural and/or poor areas.

Plenty of people vape or use Zyns, of course, but no one smokes anymore.
>>
>>18730224
That’s how I use it.
>light someone’s cigarette
>”cool lighter”
>haha thanks (puts it away)

Or sometimes they take it and look at it, then give it back. Not much else to it, it’s just an accent

I bought this for $60 and loved it and then lost it on a trip. I'm pretty sure I left it in the motel room, but they claim it wasn't found.
I guess I'm going to buy another. Though it makes me sick to have lost the other one. I don't want to go through it again.

I also have a couple metal Clippers, which are pretty great for about $17.

But I don't consider them fashionable or accessories. Just durable versions of something I already need. I don't like disposable things made of plastic. I'm quite upset that I can't get strike anywhere matches anymore. Those were my favorite.

I saw these posted in the last lighter thread and bought one. Supposedly it runs on kerosene or gasoline or anything which is super cool. But I’ve yet to try it out. I used to collect Zippos in high school but never liked the bad taste they imparted to the cigarettes and I’d never light a bong with one. I prefer cleaner, odorless, flavorless butane.

Yes. Buy it for yourself, not for conversation. The idea that you can send your 60 year old lighter back to the manufacturer and they'll do their best to get it back you in the best shape possible because they are proud of what they do appeals to me.
>>

>>
>>18730209
They can look cool in a bubble, but if you don't smoke regularly, it just comes off as performative to the point where it's less cringe to just keep it at home as part of a collection.
>>
>heh better fill my lighter with fluid and replace the flint
sorry but anything but a BIC is performative beyond belief and I hate the term "performative" but this is it
>>
>>18730483
Exactly, it's like carrying a pocket watch or a quill pen.
>>
>>18730519
Pocket watches and luxury pens are infinitely more useful on a daily basis and not contingent on enabling a nasty habit.
>>
>>18730523
They're also just as performative as luxury lighters. If you're going to reach into your pocket to tell the time, look at your phone.

All these twee little accessories and trinkets are an effort to start conversations because the person doesn't know how to just talk to people.

>I hope people notice my fountain pen and ask me about it.
>I hope they don't notice my handwriting sucks or that the pen is leaking all over the place

>>18730539
>YOU CANT HAVE NICE THINGS, IT’S PERFORMATIVE!
Why are you even on a fashion board?
>>
>>18730548
It's not nice things. It's attention-whoring behavior.

Wearing nice clothes and a fashionable hairstyle is fine and good. Carrying some silly anachronism for no other reason than to beg people to notice you is not good. Being thirsty for attention is never fashionable. Being so insecure in your ability to talk to people that you need to constantly carry a "conversation piece" is not fashionable.
>>
>>18730551
>if you smoke you are only allowed to use Bics
>if you’re into writing you are only allowed to use Bics
>if you’re into horology you’re only allowed to use your phone
Welp, that’s a shame.

>more bad faith arguments
Cool. What other sweeping generalizations can you pull out of your ass?
>>
>>18730558
If you smoke, you smell like shit and are not fashionable, so you shouldn't be on /fa/.
If you're carrying around a fountain pen to impress people, you're a capering nerd and are not fashionable, so you shouldn't be on /fa/.
If you're into """horology""" you're one of the pests on the watch threads that makes this board intolerable. Those posters are all fat, old, and poor, which is not fashionable and so they shouldn't be on /fa/.
>>
>>18730564

I know you're not big on reading, so you must have skipped this huge post >>18730249 but I clearly explained that I have nice, metal lighters because they're more DURABLE.
Also, I smoke. It's not like people are carrying around fancy gold lighters to light other people's cigarettes.
There's nothing performative about not wanting to contribute to pointless, disposable plastic waste. You stupid fucking pile of shit.
>>
>>18730539

>>
>>18730567
But no one has imposed that limitation. The crux of this entire thread is that fancy lighters are interesting objects in and of themselves, but carrying one around goes beyond mere quirkiness and into the real of affectation

Then someone who clearly has decided to make a fancy lighter his whole personality took offense and here we are.

Sometimes being fashionable means knowing when NOT to stand out.

Yeah, this thread is not turning out like he hoped it would.
>>
>>18730572
No one has made any lighter any part of their personality. No one is trying to draw any attention by using them. You have no idea what you're talking about, zero evidence to support what you're claiming people do, and seem to just be here to troll an interest that you don't care about. Because it somehow threatens your "old money fashion" faggotry regarding clothing.
Cunt.

A nice lighter is arguably not equivalent to a fountain pen or pocket watch. It’s carrying around a nicer pen because you like writing/wearing a nice watch because it’s a nice accessory and tells time. God forbid someone goes beyond utility in a fashion board. Let me guess, watches are also affectation

This really hasn’t been a fashion board for a long, long time. It’s just a social board now. It seems like I’m in a tiny minority on this board in that I actually leave the house regularly. Most of the other anons who claim to work work remotely.
>>
>>18730810
What does working have to do with fashion?
>>
>>18730814
Well, you generally need a job to be able to pay for your clothes and accessories.
But more pertinent is that having a non-remote job means you leave the house more and socialize with people. Fashion is an incredibly social pursuit.

During the coof my office went totally remote and for about two years the only person I saw or spoke to on any regular basis was my wife.
Being back in the office means you’re more accustomed to leaving the house to meet people, even under non-work circumstances.
There’s studies out there that people who work from home full-time are less likely to leave the house to meet their friends, since they’re just more comfortable online. Those people can’t speak to what fashion is because they’re just reading about it, not experiencing it in the real world.

MFA is nothing more than a millennial',s "help me get dressed" board for 9-5'ers that weren't taught by their dad's. The only advice being to wear slim fit everything- especially chinos with a button down.

At least this board has occasionally interesting topics once you get past the watches, Asian tiktok hate and gorillamaxxing.

Have you seen the oceans recently? Do you know about the microplastics problem? I know you're trying to be all edgy and shit, but I don't believe that you don't care.
You'd have to be ignorant or just stupid to honestly think it's okay to just produce endless plastic junk that won't biodegrade for thousands of years and just dump it wherever for future generations to deal with. We're dealing with it already.

>>18730868
You're a fucking moron. The only reason to carry a lighter is to smoke. Unless you're camping you'd never regularly keep a nice lighter on you if you don't smoke.
>>
>>18730826
This board absolutely does not have interesting topics. But more to the point, it seems almost anti-fashion.
Expressing any interest in fashion apart from dressing exactly like Alain Delon will get you accused of being gay or Indian.

Sure, plenty of threads on MFA are trying to help guys with the basics, who are starting from scratch. This board seems to actively sabotage others.

Oh, company does t exist anymore since over 10 years. Fuck. I’m old. Gotta search for mine when I visits my parents, maybe it’ll become a collectors item.
They run with gasoline and thus suffer from the same issue as zippos. But it’s a neat objet. I’ve got a few other nice ligjters( some used to be quite expensive), they got handed out as presents, back in the 80s, when smoking was common and anything smaller than wads of cash wasn’t corruption, when you where in a high enough position, so I got quite a few from my grandfather.

This thread is for people who carry lighters. We happen to smoke. Maybe you should find a thread filled with people who carry durable lighters and don't smoke. I'm not sure where you'll find that though because only people who smoke carry lighters. You don't have your finger on the pulse of society. People still smoke and drink all the time. i just think they’re crusty bc of the exposed hinge, and i remember having one and the lid did not have such a sturdy hold on the fluid

I was thinking that too but the butane insert is pretty good. I've had the same fuel in it for about a year now.
