The Fragrance Groups 101 Chart
The Fragrance Flowchart for Beginners
>>18737315>>18737316Enough with this old crap! Make new ones or stop posting them altogether! You're just confusing people now.
>>18737318why don't *you* make a new one? I think they are still a good starting point, even with some frags being discontinued. If you're not able to start from these two and from the OP, you're not gonna ngmi anyway.>sotd: Hermes Un Jardin a Cyntherehave a tester lying around, smells like good quality sunscreen. might buy a bottle.
I was buying some cologne and the cute cashier said she liked my outfit. What am I supposed to do in this situation?

SOTD: Memo Tiger's NestI have become the high priest of olibanum
>>18737325insert tongue into her buttholeyes, it's really as simple as that
SOTD: CDNIM
>>18737354I'm a CK Eternity guy.
>>18737325What's your SOTD?
>>18737312>I'm in America so figure you must not beI am but I'm trying to show restraint after all these purchases I been making before I have a serious problem
>SOTD SuperleggeraSo good bros. It just works. It’s the platonic ideal of a mens fragrance.
Any tea frags with very good performance? Is Wulong Cha X the only one?
My cousin bought me an attar oil during his trip to Mecca. The attar is not for me to wear on my skin, but for prayer rugs instead. I smelled it but it doesn't smell like oud or musk.
What does Dylan Blue smell like? I don't want to blind buy a fragrance that gives me headache or nausea like Tom Ford Noir.
Fragrance General, how many bottles of perfume do you own?
>>18737325Was this cashier the person who sold you the cologne?
I'm sorry but this stuff fucks. If you don't like it your probably gay
>>18737417Just got my sample in. This smells like dirty socks to me. Horrible and cloying. The worst of the lineup and I hate the whole line except the original allure homme. That should tell you something
>>18737471it tells me you're a noseletthe whole line is overrated but it was engineered to not offend anybody
>>18737478>everyone should like it!Ha think again fag
>>18737471>The worst of the lineup and I hate the whole line>That should tell you somethingYeah, it literally tells me your opinion is invalid
>i love sauvage saar
>>18737445currently at 7
>>18737427it smells like what it looks like: a joe average men's shower gel, inoffensive, nice enough, can't go wrong but also not strong projection, not beast mode. it's not expensive so even if it smells bland you won't lose muchI haven't bought one yet but thinking on it, it's relative, VPH is a big favorite this summer.
>>18737471That's a first. I've heard people say generic or boring but never outright offensive. The whole lineup is just good easy reach stuff. Tell me this though, do you even dislike Edition Blanche?
>>18737445around 150
>>18737517What part of "I hate their entire lineup" do you not understand? Yes I hate edition blanche too. All of them are rather dense powdery and cloying similar to how I feel about vibrato
>>18737523Damn. Sorry to hear that. Gonna respray some Superleggera and mow the lawn. Stay cool out there anon
>>18737469i just don't like pear all that much
>>18737315I'm pretty new to frags I have maybe 30 samples, should I try to fit them into these families/categories as an exercise and then buy more from those categories I haven't tried yet?Or should I stop seeing fragrances as only part of these families and look at an even bigger picture?
>>18737427I paid full retail when I bought dylan blue, was worth, it's a good frag
Fuck, I should have bought Lalique Equus when I had the chance, it seems to have been discontinued.
You all have extremely shit taste. Must be zoomers.
>>18737469too much ambroxen for my taste, but i see why people like it
>>18737460Negative>>18737360Raed Absolu
Bought jojoba and those roll-on thingies and some more oils.First try ended in massive failure because I went on without a dropper, hoping to just drop from bottles. Of course some oils flowed like water so I screwed up ratios I had planned. Fortunately all of these were heart/top (sage, oregan, bay), so they just nuked my nose with herbs/camphor and eventually evaporated, leaving a pleasant but boring hay/oakmoss/vetiver/patchouli/texas cedar aroma.I'll buy good lavender, frankincense, clary sage and labdanum oils, and see what I can do with that. I have no idea where I can take this. I want wild thyme but I can't find it anywhere.
>TF Oud WoodCreamy woods with spices and resins. Light medicinal sweetness. No evolution, very linear. Sometimes a smoky, resinous note is perceived, reminiscent of incense. It's the Vetiver. Unfortunately, there's a very realistic plastic aftertaste in the background, like latex gloves or the aroma of a shop selling counterfeit plastic bags.P.S.1 I need to keep trying this one, but that plasticky note ruins the experience.P.S.2 By the way, the bottle is gorgeous.
I think I'll try35% Hay absolute 25% Texas cedarwood 15% Oakmoss10% Gurjun balsam 8% Geranium 5% Bay laurel 2% Thyme
Oh I forgot I got coriander. Gonna do this: Hay absolute — 14 dropsTexas cedarwood — 9 dropsOakmoss — 6 dropsBay laurel — 3 dropsCoriander seed — 3 dropsThyme — 2 dropsPatchouli — 2 dropsGurjun balsam — 1 drop
>>18737534What is your goal with fragrances? Are you trying to experience new things, build a wardrobe, discover what your taste is, etc? I think most people will benefit from sampling older classics to understand how the craft has developed over time, how each genre started, and how trends evolve. The flow chart is also the more useful OP image. The categories are handy for discovery if you find something you like and want similar stuff, or want a few leads on a specific profile you already have in mind.
>>18737557i dont typically like fruity feminine leaning fragrances but there is just something about it that is ADDICTING
This is incredible. I need a bottle NOW
>SOTN: Nicolai Odalisqueweird name, incredible chypre(-adjacent) frag
>>18737539Oh no... and I've been spraying mine with abandon lately. It's one of their best scents, why kill it off?
How does Extreme compare to the original? I liked the original but I started finding it too bland after a while. Like something was missing. Some human warmth or sweetness.
>>18737623A little bit of all those, I kinda know what my taste is and which bottles I would like to buy, I would probably be happy with them.I still want to explore more just for the sake of it and keep collecting samples and experiencing them just as a hobby.I barely even go outside since I work from home anyway, I just want to be more autistic about it.I guess I'll just keep buying more and more samples that seem interesting to me.
>>18737419You can try Winter Palace
>>18737427like an even more generic light blue
>>18737325It's just a compliment, chill out.>>18737314I got a sampler of acqua di gio absolu last year, wore it but I can't really detect it myself. I wore it again this year and my coworkers complimented it a lot, but i still can't smell it. My friend says he liked it better than D&G light blue eau intense. I had the same problem with versace eros, but aeros flame is something i can detect more, but it fades. I have no problem with dylan blue. What are some other blends of this that are highly recommended?
2001 vintage Eau d'Hermes worth grabbing for $100?
>>18737325mating press behind the counter
Let's say I sample something and I hate the smell, how can I get it off my skin fast?
>>18737802Grease-cutter disinfecting wipe, then soap and water.
>>18737802Sanitizing wipe, or castor oil/mineral oil and a cloth or napkin. Anything that dissolves oils will cut through the fragrance.
>>18737738>2001 vintage Eau d'Hermes worth grabbing for $100?Have you tried it before. I personally hate it.It's a classic eau de cologne with a leather accord, similar to AdP Colonia Intensa, but it has this cumin note which, to a lot of people, smells like armpit.
>>18737808Never tried it. Decided to pull the trigger on it and a partial of 1978 Eau Sauvage. I'll probably like it, I like stuff like kouros and orto parisi so maybe a little bit of armpit could be the move.
Is vintage Fahrenheit worth it?Not typically a vintage hunter, but I’ve gone after a few select vintages for the experience and enjoyed my previous vintage purchases. Whatcha think Fraggots? It’s not like I have some deal on the line, in fact I’ll probably end up overpaying just because I’m not looking to wait months or years for some steal to show up, but it won’t break the bank either.
>>18737840Yes. It's not as strong but it lasts a long time, it's muted but activates in the heat. It's strangely unique like a watery green floral scent. I like it, very masculine.
>>1873744556, I need to wind down
>>18737629i honestly dont find it feminine leaning at all. apparently they named it blue talisman because it smells wildy different to some people as if you are under some kind of spell but thats most likely marketing
CK shock arrived today and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did....
What does he wear, /frag/?
>>18737887Does it or does it not smell like a can of monster energy dirnk
>>18737850Same. I had 55 last time I counted, but quite a few have come in.
>>18737725D&G Light Blue?
>>18737559>he wears Arab fragrance and attract chicks at the same time/frag/ on suicide watch
>>18737603That thing smells synthetic as fuck
>>18737802Just wash it with water and soap
>>18737469Based on the bottle, you just know Indians will wear this.
>>18737559>>18737945I want to like Absolu, it smells identical to 67, but it’s got a subtle, but pervasive synthetic quality that’s absolutely ruining it. I love Luxe Gold and Silver. Those are incredible. I do believe silver is an original DNA.>>18737360Prive Rose
>>18737962>pervasive synthetic qualityMaybe I'm a noselet but thankfully I don't perceive that. I just like the musky vanilla dry down. I picked it up completely blind after seeing it in my local Ross.>LuxeI want to try it out but the notes seem so random. I'm not gonna go out of my way to buy it online but if I see it locally I'll probably buy it for shits and giggles
>>18737645it might be what you're looking for, it's like the original but with added resins, which do givve a bit of warmth and sweetness. they are also quite incensy.I prefer it over the original and it's one of my favorites
>>18737970I’ve never seen a new release at Ross before. Jealous of your pickup. I paid retail. How much was it?>LuxeLuxe was pretty cheap when I bought it. $15 on Amazon. Legitimately one of the sexiest smells I’ve ever tested. Too masculine for my personal wear (foid), but I like putting it on my bedsheets. It smells identical to Dolce & Gabanna’s K Parfum Intense. It’s a heavy musky blue scent. It’s similar in family to Absolu, but much more rounded and mature imo. Polo 67 is definitely an “everyman” scent.
>>18737978>Never seen a new release at RossYeah it’s been happening more and more these past few months, I dunno what’s happening but I’m not complaining >How much?$25>foidWhat the fuck, we have foids here?>musky blue, similar family as absoluWell when you put it like that I’m a lot more tempted to straight up order it now
My aunts gave me money this evening. I can't wait to buy Dylan Blue.
Asking again >>18737189
>>18737603This one has that sandalwood tone with leather undertones that I like, but I detect a synthetic plastic note similar to TF Oud Wood. I suspect both fragrances contain low-quality synthetic sandalwood.
>>18738031I forgot, I'm talking about Santal 33
>>18737912Hell no, it smells like what I think people who buy jazz club think that jazz club smells like, it smells like a cigar and sweetness, but everyone says it smells like dr.pepper..... best $28 I ever spent
Had the coolest experience ever yesterday in a niche perfume store and it's thanks to /frag/, you autists got me into a hell of a hobby.>In the mall with a friend just after shooting some hoops>We come across this store that had a huge Sospiro banner in front of it>"wtf i've never seen this before">As we enter, we are greeted by the salesperson, an older woman in a blazer>She takes us to try a few Sospiro frags, some PdM and I show some designers to my friend who's not into frags>He falls in love with Tobacco Vanile, as one should>I start to sperg out about a few niche frags that I've tried and the lady does too, begins to school us in niche scents, notes and raw materials, their origin and season of the year in which they are available>Turns out that she is actually trained in perfumery and knows about pretty much every frag's scent profile, the story behind them and the house's intent for the frag>Introduce her to some niche frags that she didn't know about, she's legit curious and we talk about our tastes>"Since you enjoys fragrances so much, would you like it if I invited you to an exclusive Masterclass for a Tom Ford release we are having next week?">She can only invite customers but opens an exception for meHonestly I felt bad for not buying anything, I made it clear from the start that I only wanted to introduce my friend to niche frags but the treatment was so premium that I actually wanted to buy a niche there. I won't though, as the mall tax makes it so a $300 frag I can get online becomes a $500 one. She had me try a few Tiziana Terenzis, got to know more about Regalien frags and even tried a few interesting Initios. She helped me find the perfect scent for me, and all the talk we had made me want to learn more so it's a great win.>>18737645It's exactly that. I got mine a few weeks ago and I use it mostly on dates with the gf and special occasions, very warm and classy profile while still being distinct.>SOTD Caron Yatagan
>>18738087on one hand that's nice of her and it's always good to deal with people who know what they are doingon the other hand that is how you sell stuff, anon
>>18738087It's hard to find other fume autists that are into the niche stuff out there and actually know stuff. Wish there was a tighter community out there that appreciates the artistic side.
>>18737645If you feel Encre Noire is underwhelming extreme will have what you're looking for. Its dry, resinous and earthy. Like a fir forest staved of water.
>>18738115I'm hope Extreme doesn't lean into the cypress too much like the original. Cause I always felt like I smelled like a Christmas tree or a graveyard.
What are some of the most mature fumes out there? Not necessarily dark but serious. No gourmands or sweetness but would still like some warmth.
>>18738123check out all classic Hermes frags
>>18738123Antaeus, Eau Sauvage, Knize Ten, Cuir de Russie, Aramis, Mitsouko,
>>18738087>nicheThis thread really needs to start calling out people that use this word as a compliment. It’s masstige.
>>18738104I know, that's why even though I felt bad, I recognize that she was doing her job as a good salesperson to attract me to buy the product. I liked the interaction, I'll take everything I learned from that and buy it cheaper from trusted sources>>18738146While I understand your desire to refine the thread's vocabulary, I still think niche applies. Masstige is true for Dior, Chanel and LV, designer brands that are marketed as luxury for the masses and are famous as such, even in this thread. Now, avoiding your selection bias because not everyone is a frag enthusiast, the products that I got to know are niche by definition of the word, specialized products that appeal to a small portion of the population, not only because of the prohibitive price point but because of the specialty in something that isn't mass produced or produced for mass appeal. I do concede that some niche houses are going masstige, but I feel like in frag talk, niche also covers that. We all know when it really isn't niche.
>>18738024aside from baccarat rouge I can't think of anything
Anyone rocking CDG colognes? Particularly Vettiveru, which sounds cool.
do people here like jo malone of is it "slop"?
Tried Givenchy Society Sport yesterday. It feels like its trying to do a similar thing to Dior Homme Sport and the drydown reminds me a bit of of Nishane Ambra Calabria (citrus+green+amber/vanilla). Fairly interesting for a fresh designer release.
>>18738146Those words refer to two different things. There is no situation where masstige can replace the use of niche or designer. Masstige is a quality that can apply to either category.
I know I'm not supposed to wear fragrances at the gym but that's the only time I ever leave the house, are there any acceptable gym fragrances?
>>18738285Yeah you can get away with fresh aquatics and citrics since they don't take the air completely like warm, sweet or spicy frags. You can get away with most frags you just have to spray less, or ideally sissy spray even though I think it's a waste.
>>18738285Yatagan, silver oud, ambre sultan. If anyone says anything tell them I allow it.
>>18738285>are there any acceptable gym fragrances?not if you want to keep your Whiteness intact. only browns spray at the gym because they cant go one fucking hour without screaming for attention with some inappropriate fragrance
>>18738285only EDCs and light frags can be worn at the gym+ ofc Rien but only with 10+ sprays
>>18738285I use Megamare at the gym. Just do whatever you want, who cares what people think of you?>but you're inconveniencing peopleI'd rather smell a fragrance than people's sweat
>>18738272Girls like Jo Malone and Jimmy Chu.
>>1873828515 sprays of azzaro chrome
>>18738317im not a girl...
>>18738304>I'd rather smell a fragrance than people's sweatHow about both, a fragrance that smells good mixed with sweat?
Tried out Myslf Intense at the store, it's more pleasant than the rest of the line but it's 100% dryer sheets. If you just want to smell like laundry, this is the one.
>>18738302Catching whiffs of a tall dark and handsome Arab cutie doing reps across the gym motivates my cardio.
Damn it’s kind of crazy what oxidation will do to a frag. I bought a ELDO sampler back in Dec 2023, most of the vials were clear or slightly yellow tinged, Rien being the one exception which was fairly dark yellow. It’s been in a (dark) closet since then, relatively heat controlled, and like half of them turned various shades of yellow, Tom of Finland and Une Amourette turned pink.
>>18738383My sister-in-law let me try her ELDO sample set and keep a few vials I liked. Love Hermann, but she did tell me the set was 3+ years old and colors were all as you mentioned, so don’t know if the scent is fundamentally changed. I don’t want to pay for a full bottle if it doesn’t smell the same :( Have you noticed any changes scent wise?
>>18738387I haven’t actually retested anything yet, I pulled it out of storage because I was planning to do so, but have ended up working on some of my other sample backlog. On top of that, it was the first set of frags I ever really took time to smell and appreciate, so no doubt my nose and opinions have changed. If the frag has really turned I might notice, but otherwise I doubt I’ll be able to really differentiate.
Eau d'Hermes is underwhelming. I was expecting an aromatic citrus/chypre for some reason, not a sweaty spicy cumin/cinnamon.
Neroli is the real old money shitYou guys are just afraid to admit it
Finally I blind bought Dylan Blue. Test it at home, the smell is like shaving cream imo. Check the notes on Fragrantica:>bergamot>Ambroxan>aromatic fougereOf fucking course. I want to thank you guys for not lying and convince me to buy it.
>>18738555I can't tell if this is you saying you like or not.
>>18738562Of course I like it.
>>18738567Good, based. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's very nice, and reasonably priced.

What are some niche of the niche type of fragrances?Side Note: The original Encre Noire smells a lot more niche to me than many Amouages, Creeds and Tauers etc that even smell mass appealing to me in comparison.
SOTD: Platinum Al-RehabSmells like Egoiste but with a hint of resinous woody balsamic drydown. Longest lasting freshie I ever wore.
SOTD: Unironically, Yara. Hate all the flankers and put off trying the OG since its release bc it was “viral.” One of the few that’s worth the hype, but it does NOT small like a strawberry milkshake. It’s a lightly warmed plastic coconut. It smells like classroom on a rainy day. Bought the rollerball a few weeks ago. Perfume just delivered. First time winning a giveaway in my life. Thought they were all fake or my luck is from hell.>>18738670>imageMy love of aquatics and Oud have always coexisted. Before Arabians were trendy, I was ordering Swiss Arabian from Britain and waiting a month to get it. I wore vintage Nautica (Blue), Attar Al Ghutra, Rose Malaki, and Oud Maknoon. Couldn’t afford and probably wasn’t even aware of niche at the time.
Ok, i received these 3 samples, it's 3 thumbs down.>Premier Figuier smells like nothing, i can't detect it.>Xerjoff Erba Pura, barely better.>Parfum de Marly Greenley, at last i can detect this one, smells like generic female citrusI'd keep my Acqua di Parma Fico di Amalfi over any of these any day of the week.

>>18738685>Before Arabians were trendyYou got into perfumes over 2000 years ago?
>>18738686I haven't tried Extreme but the regular Premier Figuier and if you can't smell it there is something wrong with your nose. You either fried it with overpowering fragrances or you're sick.
>>18738769Gas station brands like Lattafa, obvs.
My nose was bonked today because I'm tired and I wasn't feeling any of my fragrances except for Purple Oud. I had to stop for a cute cat that came when I called. It wrapped around my legs, and kept smelling my perfume.
Why do we become anosmic to some notes and not others?Which aromachemicals tend to cause the least noseblindness? I'd like to focus on fragrances I can actually smell
>>18738790Because molecules serve a purpose and when they don't our brain ignores them. Punch yourself in the face each time after wearing the perfume you go noseblind to. Soon enough you will no longer be noseblind to it.
>>18738669I'm just wearing Terre d'Hermes EDT today

I got iron duke and acrasia as a wedding gift and the girl hated her acrasia. Can't tell if I'm in the wrong for picking it or if she's a bitch.
>>18738828bothit's probably an interesting frag but why would anyone give it as a wedding gift? she's most probably a noselet so you could've gifted her Delina or something basic like that
On the one hand, I'd get to try frags that are nearly unavailable here in Europe. On the other hand, €78 for 9 samples (incl shipping, Bon Monsieur not pictured) feels way steep.Does anybody see any better solution?
