-a clothing item (ie coat)?
-a watch or jewelry?
-shoes?

In The Overcoat by Nikolai Tolstoy, the character, Akaki, buys an Overcoat that is worth 2.5 his monthly wage.
Being a poor wagie, he has spent many years saving money for it.
A few days after buying the overcoat, someone steals it from him. Not being able to get another new coat and being in Russia in winter, he dies.

No, never.

The most I've ever spent at once was $2k on a set of alpine stars bike leathers. I can make $2k in a week sometimes.

Clothing used to be expensive because of the prices of the materials. Real fur, leather, fabric produced in low tech facilities, etc.
Today there's no excuse for clothes being expensive af. Everything is mass produced for pennies

Yeah, an overcoat in XIXth century Russia was pretty much like buying a small car.
It's what made it possible to walk around in the cold winter and survive.

Was it worth it?

A watch I'd spend a month's salary on.
Shoes, a suit or outerwear I'd spend two weeks' salary on.
Anything else, no more than a single week's salary.

There's not really any need to spend more than ~$1000 on any item to get great quality.
Designer wool coat, $800-1500, real nice ones up to 2k.
A loro Piana coat for +5000 you're paying for the name. You can buy the budget versions of the quiet ultra luxury styles at places like Pini parma.
Great shoe/boots from real shoemakers $500-1000, above that is fancy leathers, hand made, brand premium.
You get a decent watch for $500-1000, probably use same base movements as something that cost $1500-3000.
Luxury entry watches 5k-10k, but should hold value ok, especially if you buy used.

Why don't he just steal one from another man and kick start the buying-stealing cycle?

He was a coward.

I exposed all the inconstitancies of the story to chatgpt.
-How can losing 2 months and a half of wage be a life threatheting situation?
-And how is his situation any worse than american wagies who can cover a 1K emergency?
It all came down to: his situation was not any worse than wagies in the US, he was just a weak minded man.

It's a poverty porn, not a realistic novel.

It took him probably way longer than that to save this amount, because most of his wage goes towards just getting by. So on short notice he won't be able to buy another coat

I like traditional greatcoats, finding them new with all the traditional features can be hard, getting one made to measure is something I absolutely would consider if I lived in a place where I could wear it for more than 2 weeks a year. But even to american wages, such things can be had at perfectly solid quality for a mere 2275$, which is just about 1 month of wages for my lazy europoor ass. Why would I spend more?

Max I actually consider spending:
-500€ jacket (100% english wool fabric)
-300€ watch (only jewelry I would wear)
-400€ boots (leather, hand welted)
I don't know about the watch, but my impression is that for the jacket and boots, at least in germany, you hit diminuishing returns at about that price point. Greatcoats a bit higher (700-800€). All off the rack of course, bespoke is another matter.

For watches, the diminishing return is around $500-$700, that where you get a good Sellita SW-200 movement inside and good finishing.

Ironically I don't care for mechanical watches at all. Give me a solar powered radio controlled watch any day. But in a smart and sleek form factor please.
Also ironically I would probably shell out at least 4k€ for a mauser action rifle if I earned a bit more money. And if my mom allowed me to install a gun safe in her basement. Ah well, something for the future.

What the fuck was he doing in all those winters before he got the coat?
>>
>>18744540
He had an old worn down coat
