I present an historical curiosity. This is the first ever Cartier tank wristwatch produced in 1917 for General BlackJack Pershing. The world’s most respected general who defeated the Kaiser wore this watch. He probably wore this baby while spraying out of work veterans with a hose.

I like modern Tanks especially ones with diamonds and stuff that people would initially mark as a ladies. In 1920s though that exorbitant and bourgeois look was actually the men’s style. Without context, most people would assume the watch in the pic belongs to a woman and not to a famed US general. I don’t like how ostentatious watches and clothes from that era were stolen by women.

I was thinking of the ‘Bonus expeditionary force.’ Apparently that was Douglas MacArthur and General Patton who did that.

It said Pershing was already retired by 1932.

OP would have us believe that was the style at the time.

That was the style for men’s watches at the time. It was designed by Cartier who had served on the front during the war and gave it as a gift to Pershing for having defeated the Kaiser. It is inspired by the WWI style tanks that Pershing would have had first hand experience from leading.

I actually like this photo. It’s my screen avatar on a classic Hollywood forum that I browse now. The baby boomers love it.
