If you're thinking of getting your first and only denim jacket, which type should you go for? I'm leaning towards the type 1 without the chest pocket button, but how do you know which one is the best for you?

>>18759240I have a type 1 and type 3, and greatly prefer the type 1. Lack of pockets hasn't been an issue and the cropped, boxy look just works better on me than the longer and slimmer type 3. I think you should keep the pocket though, or just get a denim shirt if you don't want it. My type 1 just has an open pocket though, not sure I'd like it with a pocket closure.

The thing with denim jackets is they're supposed to just be armor for your actual clothes and absorb the dirt and abrasion. As a jacket itself they're pretty fucking useless. They're hot in summer, they're cold in winter, they are horrific in the rain and dry slowly while being both abrasive to you when wet and freezing cold. It's also less durable than duck canvas and an obsolete workwear material. Other than the larp look denim jackets are some of the worst available for casual use.

>>18759981Breathable is a stretch, normal denim jackets do not have enough ventilation. I once had a levis commuter type 3 which was vented, waterproof, had extra pockets, and 3m reflectors. It was pretty cool. Normal denim jackets just kind of suck at everything

If you aren't a fattie you should definintely go for the rider jacket. A little less versatile, but I think it looks snappier. Is nice with a contrast collar or a very light/dark wash

Yes. Is it over priced? Yes. But it will also have good construction, good materials and probably a really good cut as well. They’re more specialized and stylized and will hang on you in a way that will be really flattering to your shape.All three will serve their purpose and do their job as a denim jacket, but each brand has their own function and appeal. Honestly, $350 or whatever for the RRL jacket isn’t that much to pay for something that will look good on you right out of the box. Sometimes the extra cash is worth it for exactly what you want rather than going for a more “affordable” option that you won’t want to wear after it arrives and fits like a burlap sack
I bought this after wanting a storm rider forever.Sucks that it's women's but I don't think I would ever find a better deal - I can get the Red Tornado one for 180 euro but it's heavily distressed, and I got this for 160 euro in 2 sizes to see if either L or XL fits okay.

Seems like they make relatively small run of them every year, but materials, construction, and cut are all top tier well above the price point.Wrangler also makes a very good 14.5oz type iii-ish jacket which they market as part of their "cowboy cut" line. Outwardly it has the same look as a Levis type iii, but the pattern is quite different. Also stacks up well above it's price point in terms of quality. This was my go-to jacket before I got into heavyweights.
